TMCnet's Online Project Management Week in Review
Making Google Drive compatible with the new online project management system streamlines the storage process. “Now, Google Drive makes this easier as a single place to store all your files and access them from anywhere,” said Mark Mader, CEO of Smartsheet. “We’re very excited about this deeper level of integration and the increased convenience it delivers to our customers.”

Meanwhile, the State of Utah’s Division of Facilities and Construction Management (DFCM) decided to use AssetWorks, AiM Capital Project Management, to be in charge of all the construction and capital planning initiatives throughout the state.
This new management system will be in charge of almost 500 projects, which total over $1 billion. Gregg Buxton, DFCM’s director said, “AiM Capital Project Management will allow us to break down organizational silos by providing a single solution and a single authoritative database for all DFCM employees. It’s all about shared resources. For instance, our Construction Division can pinpoint warranty information that can save our Facilities Division time and labor downstream.”
It’s important to stay on top of these projects because many of them require paperwork to be completed before, during, and after construction. This will help the state stay on top of everything going on statewide from a single interface. The AiM Capital Project Management has been helping the DFCM improve in both accuracy and speed of reporting projects.

Mini Swamy, reported that Project Management Software, a mid-market solution for managing projects will be allowing for multiple people and project management.
“Project Insight, a mid-market solution for managing projects, offers data migration of Basecamp data into products and creates a solid foundation for intelligent scheduling and a robust work breakdown structure,” reported Swamy. Project Insight allows for extraction of data from a Basecamp system and migrate it to Project Insight, which will apply enhanced tools to allow for schedule, allocating, and collaborating with multiple people and projects at the same time.
The company is offering a promotion where the first 100 migrations come at no cost. However, as we all know well most people will be transferring more than 100 migrations between them. According to Swamy, further migrations cost around $1400.
Read the rest of the report here.
Lastly, since online project management deals with multiple people it’s good to have a issue management or a help section available for users, Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor, gave some tips to users helping them find the right solution to support issue tracking.
Campbell said, “It’s easy to see at first glance that some project management solutions may offer a valued approach in the management of projects, especially when the key focus is scheduling, resource tracking, reporting or other elements of the project,” said Campbell. “Without built-in issue tracking, the project management solution falls short. In fact, it’s possible the solution could even create more issues than it should be designed to prevent.”
Some of Campbell’s tips include: making sure the online project management’s built in tracking is there to help you; there is a resolution process, and the capability to manage all projects within the same location.

TMCnet Green Tech Week in Review
In its “State of the Air” report for 2012, the American Lung Association reveals that the air quality in America’s most-polluted cities is at its cleanest since the ALA began issuing its research 13 years ago. Standards set under the federal Clean Air Act have required states to take a number of steps to clean up major air pollution sources —coal-fired power plants, diesel engines and SUVs —and the legislation has worked, cutting ozone (smog) and particle pollution (soot) from the air in urban areas. The news wasn’t all good, however. Despite this progress, the ALA said that unhealthy levels of air pollution still exist and in some parts of the country have worsened; and that than 40 percent of people in the U.S. still live in areas where air pollution continues to threaten their health.
And finally, it looks like a UFO, but it’s actually a prototype of an airborne wind turbine designed to drift aloft at high altitudes. Once launched, it catches stronger gusts than, and generates twice the power of, a conventionally tower-mounted diesel model, at a lower price. Boston-based Altaeros Energies recently completed testing of a 35-foot scale prototype of the Altaeros Airborne Wind Turbine (AWT) at the Loring Commerce Center in Limestone, Maine. The prototype, fabricated in partnership with Doyle Sailmakers of Salem, Mass., achieved several key milestones—among them, climbing 350 feet high and producing power at high altitude Altaeros is developing its first product to reduce energy costs by up to 65 percent by harnessing the stronger winds found over 1,000 feet high and reducing installation time from weeks to days. The AWT (News - Alert) also is designed to have virtually no environmental or noise impact, and to require minimal maintenance. The firm currently is seeking partners to join its effort to launch the first commercially available high-altitude wind turbine in the world.

Cloud Sherpas and CipherCloud Announce Partnership to Bring Security to Cloud Customers
According to Dev Ghoshal, senior vice president of operations at CipherCloud, “By working together, Cloud Sherpas and CipherCloud are able to help organizations worldwide that otherwise would not be able to move to the cloud. Cloud Sherpas has helped more than 1.5 million users with the process of implementing Salesforce and 'Going Google.' We are excited to be working with them as they strive for the next 1.5 million.”
Data privacy, data residency, compliance, and security are continuing concerns with cloud adoption. Many of the top hosting providers now offer cloud services and adequate encryption tools for sensitive data have been slow to implement.
In addition to the economic advantages of an on-demand computing environment, these companies enjoy the flexibility of being able to scale their services up or down to accommodate changing needs or business requirements, without having to invest in new equipment. Yet while any type of company that requires application hosting could benefit from the provisioning of computing resources as a service, these companies do not want to expose sensitive data via the public cloud.
“Security in the cloud is a paramount issue for our customers, particularly for those facing regulatory requirements in the financial and health care industries and customers in countries with data residency requirements,” said Eran Gil, SVP, global business development, Cloud Sherpas. “Several organizations have already approached us with interest in CipherCloud's cloud data protection gateway.”
CipherCloud's award-winning technology secures sensitive customer data across multiple public and private cloud applications without impacting functionality or performance. The solution uses comprehensive security controls including strong encryption, tokenization, activity monitoring, and malware detection. CipherCloud has been recognized by Gartner (News

ExponentHR Deploys MaxACD Contact Center Solutions for Microsoft Lync
“We evaluated many options for our contact center solution before we began implementing AltiGen's MaxACD in March 2012,” said Misha Vyazmensky, chief technology officer at ExponentHR. “During our evaluation, AltiGen's MaxACD call center software for Lync set itself apart from competitors with its ease of deployment, performance, reliability and its integration into Lync. With the range of capabilities, our customer service agents can use the exact applications they need to ensure the best possible support for our growing client base.”
Since AltiGen specializes exclusively in working with Microsoft VoIP and UC products, it probably was in fact one of the best choices that ExponentHR could have made in the way of human resources integration to Lync. Larger businesses – especially fast growing ones – need to have a platform they can trust.
They don’t have the time to keep fumbling around, back and forth between mediocre software until finding something that works. The company seems to be satisfied with its decision to go with MaxACD, and that’s good for both sides of business.

Cue the Tissues: HTC Blames 70 Percent Net Profit Drop on iPhone 4S
Reuters is reporting that HTC’s 70 percent fall in net profit in Q1 2012 can only be blamed on one thing: Apple’s iPhone 4S. The Taiwanese handset manufacturer has failed to keep pace with both Apple and rival Android handset maker Samsung, and now the financials have come home to roost.
"A major challenge we faced last year was the big drop in sales in the U.S. because of competition from the iPhone 4S," explained CEO Peter Chou on Tuesday during a briefing with analysts.
As recently as last year, more than 50 percent of HTC’s fortunes came from the United States, where the company has offered a dizzying array of models spread across all four major carriers. A big chunk of Android’s growth spurt can be linked to the success of HTC and Korean rival Samsung, whose Galaxy device line is another thorn in the side of the Taiwan company.
"This is a difficult war; the market will be focusing more and more on HTC's profit and value,

Logitech Touch Mouse M600 and Cube Review
Call me crazy, but I’ve never been a big fan of the Apple mice. I’m a quick mover on the computer, constantly multitasking and clicking between different windows and Spaces, and even the wired Apple Mouse could never keep up with me. Logitech’s Anywhere MX is the only mouse that has been able to offer what I need, so I’m curious to see if the company’s two new offerings are just as effective.
The shiny, ergonomically shaped Touch Mouse M600 features a responsive touch surface that works the same as the Magic Mouse. Swipe down and your page follows. Swipe to the left, and Exposé shows the windows you have open. The scrolling behaves a lot like on your iPhone, but it works best if your mouse is free of fingerprint marks. Beyond that, I was disappointed that there weren’t more gestures available. The mouse is supposed to utilize Flow Scroll software to provide smoother scrolling for browsers, but it’s only available for PC users. As a result, there are no back and forward gestures or buttons for the Mac, which does not promote multitasking.

Wednesday Recap: WWDC Sells Out in 2 Hours, Sprint Unlimited, SkyDrive APIs
Cnet is reporting that Sprint has cemented its unlimited data pledge to customers, and that will even extend to 4G LTE, even if the next iPhone launches later this year with the faster data. While AT&T and Verizon continue to curtail their customers with capped data plans claiming the traffic could buckle their respective networks, Sprint is forging its own path -- at least until all that HD streaming grinds things to a halt. "I'm not anticipating the unlimited plan would change by that point," explains Sprint CEO Dan Hesse. "That's our distinctive differentiator." God bless you, sir -- here’s hoping you might get hired as CEO of one of the two bigger networks and carry the same gumption with you.
WWDC 2012 Sells Out in Under 2 HoursWell, that was fast. Within two hours of our news post this morning announcing ticket availability for Apple’s 2012 Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco June 11-15, early bird developers snapped up every available ticket -- leaving none for those on the West Coast, who were likely sleeping when the announcement went live at 5:30am PST. Adobe Officially Announces Creative Suite 6, Creative Cloud, Preorders Available Now
Adobe Systems Incorporated officially announced four new Creative Suite 6 editions on Monday, in addition to the company’s long-awaited Creative Cloud, which includes not only everything CS6 has to offer but a variety of other cloud-based services, all for one low monthly fee.
Available within 30 days with preorders starting today, Adobe Creative Suite 6 has been streamlined into four editions: Design & Web Premium (previously offered as separate packages), Design Standard, Production Premium and Master Collection, which includes pretty much everything but the kitchen sink.
In addition to the all-new Photoshop CS6 which has been in public beta for several weeks, CS6 includes major upgrades to Illustrator CS6 and InDesign CS6 as well as a brand-new application, Adobe Muse, which allows designers to create and publish HTML5 websites without writing code. Web creation applications Dreamweaver CS6 and Flash Professional CS6 also see major improvements, and video professionals will also get plenty of new features with Premiere Pro CS6, After Effects CS6 and the new Prelude CS6 and SpeedGrade applications.
Perhaps even bigger than CS6 itself is the official announcement of Creative Cloud, Adobe’s new $49.99 per month subscription offering which not only includes all of the CS6 applications for Mac, iOS and Android but also new apps yet to come and all future upgrades for members with an active subscription. It’s a radical new approach for Adobe, who continues to offer traditional boxed and downloadable copies of its CS6 software as well.
Adobe Creative Cloud includes 20GB of cloud storage in addition to the Adobe Creative Cloud Connection software to allow syncing, sharing and storing of files across both mobile devices and desktop computers.
Adobe Creative Suite 6 and Adobe Creative Cloud will be available within 30 days, but preorders are available for both products starting on Monday. If you are a previous user of CS3, CS4, CS5 or CS5.5, Adobe is offering a special introductory offer on a Creative Cloud subscription for $29.99 per month -- a $20 per month savings for the first year (month-to-month options are also available at a higher price).

BeaTunes Review
Sure, you started out with good intentions for iTunes, meticulously editing metadata and building perfect playlists. But gradually things got out of hand. BeaTunes is like a Swiss Army knife for your music library. The software fixes all sorts of problems, from metadata errors to spelling mistakes. It also features a couple of neat tricks that will be useful for DJs, including automatic beat detection, and the ability to identify the key of each of your tracks for more seamless mixing.
The first time you open BeaTunes, the application goes to work inspecting and analyzing your library. Inspection works on track metadata, and is fairly quick. BeaTunes inspected our library of 23,000 tracks in a few minutes. Meanwhile, BeaTunes also begins a deeper, much lengthier process of analyzing your tracks in the background, allowing for advanced features like beats per minute and key detection, as well as organization of songs by mood. According to BeaTunes’ calculations, our analysis will be done in a little over two weeks--no kidding.

The Man Who Brought the Internet to the Masses
Who invented cloud computing? Marc Andreesen. He was the first person to articulate the substance of cloud computing and how its deployment would affect businesses. He started a company called LoudCloud, which never succeeded because the timing of the startup coincided with the bursting of the tech bubble. However, Amazon’s current cloud infrastructure traces its origins to Andreesen’s ideas.
Social networking can also count Marc Andreesen as one of its first proponents. Andreesen started social network Ning, which has only had moderate success. However, his ideas about hierarchies of social networks online have borne themselves out in Facebook (News - Alert) and Groupon. Andreesen has invested in and sits on the boards of both Facebook and Groupon.
For the inventor of the web browser, being forward-looking has paid off handsomely. Now, Andreesen has set his sights on venture capital. His firm, Andreesen Horowitz, counts Zynga (News - Alert), Skype, Pinterest and Foursquare (News - Alert) among its investments. As he looks for innovative companies to capitalize, Andreesen is transforming multiple sectors of the economy through computing.
Analysts predict that Andreesen’s interests will turn to mobile. They’re also looking at Andreesen Horowitz’s investments as they pick their investment portfolio. After all, Andreesen has been right about a lot of things over the past 20 years. And it all started with a radical idea called the graphical web browser.

Oracle Versus Google and How it Affects Apple
Money, basically. In January 2010, Oracle finalized a deal to buy Sun Microsystems, including the Java computer programming language and all of its related technology. Just seven months later, on August 12, 2010, Oracle filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming the Android operating system infringed on patented Java technology. However, Google let it be known that before Oracle bought them, Sun was a huge supporter of Android, and that the Java programming language was open source and free to use.

Does the Samsung Galaxy S3 Have the Specs to Outperform the iPhone 5?
We still don't know what the Samsung Galaxy S3 is going to look like, but we bet it's going to have the same thin form-factor as its predecessors.
Set to release at a press event in London on May 3, the Samsung Galaxy S3 looks to be the Android smartphone of the moment, packing a speed boost and boasting tight integration with Google's Ice Cream Sandwich OS, along with a few adjective-worthy features and specs. While it's sure to be enough to sell (or ship, rather) a few million units, it remains to be seen how it will stack up against Cupertino's juggernaut.
A source told Andrew Hoyle of CNET UK that the newest member of the ever-expanding Galaxy family will be an incremental update over last year's model, likely in line with the supreme Galaxy Nexus. But, with the iPhone 4S still making major strides and the iPhone 5 waiting in the wings, there are a few key ingredients the Galaxy S3 absolutely must have to keep the heat on Apple.
The Galaxy S2 sported a 4.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Super AMOLED with Gorilla Glass display that was slightly improved upon with carrier variants until the Galaxy Nexus blew them all away with a 4.65-inch 1280

Microsoft Sports Springtime Glow after Surpassing Analyst Expectations
For the quarter ended March 31, 2012, Microsoft reported quarterly revenue of $17.41 billion, marking a six percent increase from the prior year period which was $16.43 billion. Operating income was just as positive at $6.37 billion, up 12 percent from the prior year period. This caught many analysts off guard as, on average, they expected the company to report earnings of 58 cents a share and revenue of $17.18 billion, according to a New York Times article.
Further, net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.11 billion and $0.60 per share, compared with $5.23 billion and $0.61 per share, respectively, in the prior year period. Prior year net income and diluted earnings per share included a $461 million or $0.05 per share tax benefit, which was largely related to a tax settlement with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, according to company officials.
What was of great note this quarter, however, was the fact that Microsoft sales of its flagship software product, Windows, rose four percent in the fiscal third quarter, despite analyst predictions that there would be a drop in business because of widespread industry data revealing weakness in the personal computer business. Specifically, the Windows and Windows Live Division posted revenue of $4.62 billion, a four percent increase from the prior year period. Moreover, a commitment to Windows 7 was demonstrated with enterprise desktops on Windows 7 now up to 40 percent worldwide.
“We saw strong demand for our business desktop and infrastructure offerings,” said Peter Klein (News - Alert), chief financial officer at Microsoft. “Solid revenue growth and continued cost discipline drove double-digit operating income growth.”
This success with its core franchises is particularly exciting because Microsoft has currently found itself treading in deep water with a big shark like Apple (News

Video: Apple Enlists Samuel L. Jackson, Zooey Deschanel for Siri Commercials
Apple has released a pair of new television commercials focusing on the magic of Siri with the iPhone 4S, but this time we get a good look at the faces using the handset -- and they’re quite familiar.
In the first spot, Nicky Fury himself (better known as Samuel L. Jackson in real life) uses Siri to help prepare for date night, complete with his own homemade risotto for the guest of honor who’s never shown. The spot ends with Jackson telling Siri to take the night off, to which she responds,

Windows 8 Will Come in Only 3 Flavors, Including RT for ARM Processors
The Windows Blog announced on Monday that Windows 8 will only be available in three flavors, down from the five Windows 7 editions (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate, for those playing the home game). But in reality, there will simply be two versions of Windows 8 for most of us: Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.
That’s because the third version, Windows RT, is an entirely new version of the operating system intended for ARM processors.
