Lightning to USB Cable Sells Out, Apple Confirms No Freebies with iPhone 5

What sells out even faster than the new iPhone 5? Apparently, the new Lightning dock connector adapters, which are now showing a two-to-three week shipping delay as Apple confirms that new handset owners won't be getting a freebie.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple's new Lightning to USB Cable, which sells for $19, has sold out within a half an hour of the iPhone 5 preorders lighting up on the company's online store.

While the $29 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter and the $39 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) won't ship until next month, the cheaper Lightning to USB Cable has been mostly available since Wednesday's big announcement, but no more.

Meanwhile, The Next Web published a report earlier this morning claiming that Apple was including a free Lightning to 30-pin Adapter with each iPhone 5. Apple's online store even offered the option to buy an "additional" Lightning to 30-pin Adapter, but this appears to be in error.

"Following the publishing on this article, TNW reader Ryan Moores reached out to share clarification he received from one of Apple’s online sales representatives," the updated report reads. "According to the representative, it is 'an error' and it is 'being investigated at the moment.'"

Bummer, but at least we'll still get those swanky new EarPods as part of the package, right? Right?

Apple Announces New iPod Lineup, 350 Million Sold to Date

Apple's media event at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco has offered up a new iPhone 5, release date information for iOS 6 and a preview of a new version of iTunes launching in October -- as well as new iPods.

Apple senior VP Greg Joswiak followed a demonstration of the new iTunes to announce 350 million iPods sold to date, calling it "the most popular music player of all time." However, some changes are in store for the aging iPod lineup, starting with the seventh-generation iPod nano.

"Let's start with the nano," Joswiak says. "We've had six generations of it. But we wanted to reinvent the nano -- we thought, what elements do we want to add?"

Apple Releases iTunes 10.7, Ready for iOS 6 and New Models

Although we would prefer to be downloading the all-new iTunes that Eddy Cue showed off at today's Apple event in San Francisco, Cupertino is pushing a modest 10.7 update to the existing version for iOS 6 compatibility.

Apple has released iTunes 10.7, and despite the full version number, this is a minor update and not the swanky new edge-to-edge version demonstrated at Apple's media event on Wednesday.

That said, you'll want to download iTunes 10.7 if you're planning to pick up a new iPhone 5 next week, or plan to preorder one of those slick new iPods.

"iTunes 10.7 adds support for iOS 6 running on compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models," the release notes read. "This update also adds support for the latest iPod nano and iPod shuffle models."

iOS 6 arrives on those aforementioned compatible devices next Wednesday, September 19, so be sure to download and install iTunes 10.7 before then so you'll be ready to go.

Yes, Of Course Apple is Already Prepping Yerba Buena for Next Week

To the surprise of virtually no one, Apple signage is already going up at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center ahead of the company's media event on Wednesday, September 12.

9to5Mac is reporting that Apple signage has been spotted going up inside the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco where the company's next big media event will be held on Wednesday, September 12 at 10am PST (1pm EST).

In addition to the internal signage, 9to5Mac reader Andrew Stern managed to snap some photos of cherry pickers waiting in the wings to start posting banners outside of the facility, which will presumably begin today.

Since last year's iPhone 4S was introduced on the Apple campus in a smaller, more intimate event, the move back to the Yerba Buena Center could be an indication that there's more in store than just the sixth-generation iPhone for next week.

Report: Apple Victory Over Samsung Affecting Android Resale Prices

Could Apple's $1.05 billion victory over Samsung last week be causing Android users to jump ship? That appears to be the case for at least one reseller who has noted a 50 percent increase in customers dumping their Android smartphones since the verdict.

Marketwatch is reporting that online reseller Gazelle.com has noted a 50 increase in Android-powered Samsung handsets being traded in since Friday's courtroom victory for Apple, which is causing resale values of those handsets to fall accordingly.

Apple, Qualcomm Tried Unsuccessfully to Invest in Taiwanese Chip Supplier TSMC

Not everyone is happy to take cash from Apple, with a new report claiming Cupertino was turned away in its efforts to invest in a Taiwanese chip maker who also rebuffed an investment from rival Qualcomm.

Bloomberg is reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has told both Apple and Qualcomm to take a hike when the companies separately offered the chip supplier cash to invest in their expanding business.

"Both proposals included investments, each of more than $1 billion, for the world’s largest custom maker of chips to set aside production dedicated to making chips exclusively for them," the report reveals, quoting unidentified "people with knowledge of the matter."

Mobile is where the growth is, so it's no surprise that both Apple and Qualcomm have come knocking on the door of TSMC, who reportedly "wants to retain control of its plants, doesn't want to sell part of itself and doesn't need cash for investments," according to chief financial officer Lora Ho in a July 19 interview.

"Apple and Qualcomm are trying to improve their position in a supply chain where a shrinking number of companies are capable of churning out the millions of parts needed to meet surging smartphone demand," the report concludes. "As they become more like computers, the advanced mobile phones need more sophisticated processors made with the latest production technology."

TSMC is currently Qualcomm's biggest supplier according to Bloomberg data, but the company appears to be keeping all of its options open for now -- probably a smart move considering the mobile chip market is expected to explode even bigger in the years ahead.

Monday Recap: iPhone 5 NFC Chip, Apple Stock Soars, Eight Possibly Banned Samsung Devices

Well, much like the end of last week, it's another great day to be Apple. The fallout from the Samsung trial verdict is still reaping rewards for Cupertino, even as things get all the more complicated. Sure, it's going to be a while before Samsung will ever cough up any money for damages, but the win gave Apple shares a significant boost today. 

Possible NFC Chip in 'Leaked' iPhone 5 Photos

We've seen images of purported iPhone 5 guts before, but the pics acquired by Apple Insider today are a little bit different. Close to the earpiece, there appears to be a near field communication (NFC) chip. The subject of significantly easier payment systems -- like waving your iPhone 5 over the coffee shop's card reader -- came up during WWDC 12. We already know Apple is planning to keep us organized with Passbook in iOS 6; an NFC chip seems like a valid possibility. Especially since, you know, Apple bought all those NFC patents this year. 

Apple Inc. Shares Rally Amid Samsung Victory

After a $1.05 billion award in damages, Apple must be feeling pretty hot right now. But the outcome of the epic Apple v. Samsung trial did more than just enforce the company's patents. Today, Apple Inc. stock rose 2-percent to $676.56, according to Reuters; the all-time high is $680.87/share. Other U.S. stocks didn't perform too favorably in the same time frame, but then again, they didn't just receive the brand boost from a big win like Apple.

Apple Names Eight Samsung Devices For Banishment

Are you tired of hearing about the Samsung v. Apple trial, yet? Well, don't get too comfortable. Appeals will likely stretch on for quite some time, and today, Apple has filed a notice naming eight different Samsung products it believes should receive banishment from the U.S. market. The filing (via The Verge) lists the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 (AT&T, Skyrocket, T-Mobile), Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Prevail. Of course, these assertions are purely on the part of Apple; Judge Koh would have to believe "irreparable harm" will befall Apple if the Samsung products don't get the axe.

German Consumer Group Threatens Facebook with Legal Action

A German consumer watchdog group is threatening Facebook with legal action if the social network giant doesn't make significant changes to how user data is shared with third parties. The Federation of Consumer Organizations believes Facebook is violating privacy laws by giving out user information via the new Facebook App Center. The organization has given Facebook an ultimatum: comply with privacy regulations by September 4, or face legal action.
