Monday Recap: iPhone 5 NFC Chip, Apple Stock Soars, Eight Possibly Banned Samsung Devices

Well, much like the end of last week, it's another great day to be Apple. The fallout from the Samsung trial verdict is still reaping rewards for Cupertino, even as things get all the more complicated. Sure, it's going to be a while before Samsung will ever cough up any money for damages, but the win gave Apple shares a significant boost today.

Possible NFC Chip in 'Leaked' iPhone 5 Photos

We've seen images of purported iPhone 5 guts before, but the pics acquired by Apple Insider today are a little bit different. Close to the earpiece, there appears to be a near field communication (NFC) chip. The subject of significantly easier payment systems -- like waving your iPhone 5 over the coffee shop's card reader -- came up during WWDC 12. We already know Apple is planning to keep us organized with Passbook in iOS 6; an NFC chip seems like a valid possibility. Especially since, you know, Apple bought all those NFC patents this year.

Apple Inc. Shares Rally Amid Samsung Victory

After a $1.05 billion award in damages, Apple must be feeling pretty hot right now. But the outcome of the epic Apple v. Samsung trial did more than just enforce the company's patents. Today, Apple Inc. stock rose 2-percent to $676.56, according to Reuters; the all-time high is $680.87/share. Other U.S. stocks didn't perform too favorably in the same time frame, but then again, they didn't just receive the brand boost from a big win like Apple.

Apple Names Eight Samsung Devices For Banishment

Are you tired of hearing about the Samsung v. Apple trial, yet? Well, don't get too comfortable. Appeals will likely stretch on for quite some time, and today, Apple has filed a notice naming eight different Samsung products it believes should receive banishment from the U.S. market. The filing (via The Verge) lists the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 (AT&T, Skyrocket, T-Mobile), Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Prevail. Of course, these assertions are purely on the part of Apple; Judge Koh would have to believe "irreparable harm" will befall Apple if the Samsung products don't get the axe.

German Consumer Group Threatens Facebook with Legal Action

A German consumer watchdog group is threatening Facebook with legal action if the social network giant doesn't make significant changes to how user data is shared with third parties. The Federation of Consumer Organizations believes Facebook is violating privacy laws by giving out user information via the new Facebook App Center. The organization has given Facebook an ultimatum: comply with privacy regulations by September 4, or face legal action.

Monday Recap: Avengers Tease, Warner Digital Copy Extended, Time Trap

As the world mourns the loss of director Tony Scott and comedian Phyllis Diller on this sleepy Monday, it seems Warner Bros. has a bit of a bright spot for fans of Digital Copy and iTunes in the Cloud. The studio is extending Digital Copy expiration dates on most of its DVD and Blu-ray titles, so be sure to hit your library and see if you can claim any codes that might have lapsed in recent years. And on that note, let's jump into the recap for Monday, August 20, 2012.

More Avengers Mobile Gaming Teased in YouTube Video

After last week's tease about something "massive" coming to mobile, Marvel is back, this time with an Avengers game teaser posted to YouTube. "MARVEL XP BRIEFING: A mysterious energy pulse has hit Earth and knocked out communications around the globe," the video description reads. "Prominent villainous organizations, such as HYDRA and A.I.M., have taken the opportunity to attack. S.H.I.E.L.D is calling all S.H.I.E.L.D agents and superhumans to report for active duty." The site also teases a link back to the Marvel XP Facebook page, although it doesn't yet provide too many clues as to what the company has it store for us.

Warner Bros. Extending Most Digital Copy Expiration Dates

Now here's a spot of good news for this sleepy Monday: According to Engadget, Warner Brothers has started extending the expiration dates for its Digital Copy titles until May 17, 2017. Tech of the Hub first discovered the change on some of their own DVD or Blu-ray discs whose Digital Copy offer had expired more than two years ago. Although some users were able to now use their codes straight away, others (including us) had to contact WB support to do so. In one case using The Final Destination Blu-ray, the original code came back as invalid via iTunes, but we were able to get a new one immediately by entering our name, email address and original code on the website. Several other Blu-ray discs that showed the new 2017 expiration date online were not so lucky, and we'll have to wait up to five days to hear back from support. Finally, one disc, Sex & The City: The Movie (hey, don't judge!) continues to show a 2009 expiration date, even on WB's website, so this trick may not work in all cases. In any event, it's quite handy to be able to revive otherwise dead codes, especially now that these titles can be accessed via iTunes in the Cloud.

Crisp Unleashes Sci-Fi Adventure Game Time Trap

SHAPE pinged us today to let readers know that the company's Crisp App subsidiary has just released a new universal iOS game called Time Trap, which attempts to "solve the mystery of a post-apocalyptic world and find out why a journalist was found missing." The $1.99 sci-fi adventure features some pretty slick graphics judging from the app description, and promises a unique atmosphere and ambient music to match. The 175MB app is now available in the App Store and requires at least an iPhone 3GS, third-gen iPod touch or any iPad running iOS 4.0 or later.

Apple Now Most Valuable Publicly Traded Company in History

In case you haven't heard, Apple hit another significant milestone today, with MacRumors noting that the company now has the most valuable publicly traded stock in U.S. history, trumping rival Microsoft who first accomplished that feat in December, 1999. Apple's stock price closed at $666.15 on Monday, giving the iPhone maker a $623.5 billion market capitalization -- although adjusting Microsoft's $618.89 market cap in 1999 for today's inflation, Apple would have to hit roughly $842.5 billion in today's dollars, a feat that no longer seems unrealistic considering their meteoric rise in recent years.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 Arriving Early 2013

The folks at PopCap have announced a sequel to their wildly successful Plants vs. Zombies game is coming in late spring of 2013, a date that seems awfully far off to be making an announcement in August, but die-hard fans will surely have something to look forward to. Indeed, the new game promises "a bevy of new features, settings and situations designed to delight the franchise's tens of millions of fans around the world." And so, the wait begins...

Monday Recap: Mid-September It Is, Gmail Adds Hangouts, Hiding the iPhone

Tomorrow is the last day of July, and what a month it's been! Seems as if iPhone users will have to suffer through the dog days of summer in August with today's news that the next handset is likely to have its moment in the spotlight come mid-September instead of last year's October debut of the iPhone 4S. Quick! To the upgrade eligibility calculator! And when you come back, be sure to read what else is happening for this July 30, 2012.

AllThingsD Confirms Mid-September Apple Event

Just this morning we reported that Apple may be targeting Wednesday, September 12 for the unveiling of the next iPhone, and sources inside the supply chain appear to have confirmed that target date with AllThings D. "And while we haven’t yet confirmed its focus, history suggests it will indeed be the new iPhone," the report reveals. "One thing’s for certain, though: Apple is ramping up for a big fall product cycle. And to see that, you need only look at the recent spike in the company’s prepayment for inventory components." Seems as if all that's left is for Apple to invite the media, but that's not likely to happen until seven to 10 days prior to the actual event, so sit back and enjoy your August, folks.

Gmail Ditches Video Chat for Hangouts

We have to confess, our own Gmail account is rarely used and we've certainly never entertained using it for video chats. But if you have, you'll be happy to hear the Official Gmail Blog's announcement today that Google

Monday Recap: Mountain Lion GM, Twitter Update Leak, Windows 8 in October

she'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes!" We speak, of course, of OS X Mountain Lion, Apple's latest and greatest version of Mac OS X which is expected later this month from the Mac App Store. And the furry gal is now closer than ever, with word that the gold master is now being pushed out to developers today. Didn't hear the news? Then be sure to read on and find out what else is making news for Monday, July 9, 2012...

Just a Matter of Time Now: Apple Releases Mountain Lion GM

We can't say this is much of a surprise, but a "GM seed" of OS X Mountain Lion turned up in the Mac Dev Center today. Tagged as Build 12A269, the "GM" stands for "gold master" -- as in, most likely the final version we'll all be installing when The Artist Formerly Known as Mac OS X 10.8 is released to the public later this month. No clue on exactly when that will be, but now that developers are downloading the gold master, it's looking like sooner rather than later.

Monday Recap: LastPass 2.0, Spider-Man Teaser, OS X 10.7.5 Pre-Release Beta

We know, you're all sitting by the internet waiting to see what Microsoft will be announcing tonight. But for those who aren't (or simply don't care), we're back with our usual generous helping of tech news for this post-WWDC 2012 week. It's a fairly lazy day for tech news, but that doesn't mean that you'll have to dig far to read everything happening on this Monday, June 18, 2012.

LastPass 2.0 Promises to Make Your Online Life "More Awesome"

Although we're partial to 1Password, the best Mac password manager is the one you already own and use. If that happens to be LastPass, you just got an awesome 2.0 upgrade on Monday that adds "significant improvements" to both the front end software as well as the servers running it behind the scenes. The software now supports attachments for documents and images, free credit monitoring alerts for U.S. residents, a more unified user experience and faster startup time -- and who's going to argue with all of that awesomeness? To read all about the update, head over to the LastPass blog and get your update on.

Gameloft Teases Amazing Spider-Man for Mobile

10 days doesn't sound like too long to wait for something awesome, but if you click the embedded YouTube video below and happen to be a fan of Spider-Man, that wait just got a whole lot longer. Gameloft will be releasing The Amazing Spider-Man for iPhone, iPad and Android on June 28, and the company today posted a pretty sweet look at what it will look like, complete with a prologue offering up some background on how Peter Parker came to fill the red and blue suit. Warning: Extreme disappointment will follow after watching this awesome video, but only because you can't buy it right now. Sigh...

Report: OS X 10.7.5 Pre-Release Beta in Limited Circulation

There's nothing for developers to download just yet, but AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has started external testing on OS X Lion 10.7.5, which could presumably be the last (or at least next to the last) version of the king of the jungle now that OS X Mountain Lion is coming down off the hill next month. There's no word on exactly what changes the update includes, but it's a good bet that MobileMe support -- including the preference pane and iDisk access -- will get wiped off the map once it's installed, given that the service is sunsetting at the end of June. Does that mean we'll see 10.7.5 before month's end? Not necessarily, but it shouldn't be too long now, we'd say.

Facebook Acquires KLIK Developer Face.com

Face.com announced today that the company has been acquired by Facebook, which kind of makes sense considering the two companies share four letters. (Just kidding.) The Face.com folks sound pretty stoked about being absorbed by the House that Zuck Built, and promise that mobile is a big part of the acquisition. "We love building products, and like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share content with their social graph," explains the creators of the KLIK for iOS app. "By working with Facebook directly, and joining their team, we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers -- that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do." Sounds like a match made in heaven to us.

Sparrow for iPhone Adds POP Email Support

The gang over at Sparrow sent out a brief tweet this morning announcing version 1.3 of their Sparrow for iPhone app is now available. Although the release notes are perhaps the briefest ever, the update adds one feature fans have been clamoring for, and that's support for POP email accounts. We're not quite sure who's still longing for POP email in this day and age, but always good to see that a developer delivers what the users want. The 1.3 update also squashes a bug related to folder mapping just ahead of the company's plans for an iPad edition of Sparrow they've been teasing recently. Sparrow for iPhone 1.3 is $2.99 from the App Store and a free update for existing users; the app is compatible with all devices running iOS 5.0 or later.
