How Much for a Microsoft Surface?

- Alert) suggested that the Surface was clearly targeting the iPad line--not surprising, as most tablet releases have been measured against the iPad with many wondering "is this the iPad-killer?"--but whether it was planning to compete on price, features, or both, Ballmer's responses weren't quite saying.

Windows Tablets to Overtake Android, Thanks to Microsoft Office 365

- Alert) and Android devices’ market shares,” Chiou said in a recent article.

Chiou issued his forecasts for Microsoft tablets with Office 365, Android and iPad tablets in a Witsview report titled, “2010-2015 Market Shares of Tablet PC Operating Systems.” WitsView is a subsidiary of the Taiwan-based Trendforce. The predictions come from tracking shipments of PCs and LCD panels.

While Office 365 might give Windows 8-based tablets a competitive edge over Android tablets, it’s not expected to dent Apple’s position as the leader in the tablet segment. The iPad currently accounts for 62 percent of the tablet market share. And by 2015, Chiou expects that number to drop to 59 percent, while it will still remain the most popular tablet by far.

The Android tablet market share, however, will drop from 32 percent to 21 percent, while Windows-based tablets rise to 19 percent.

AudioCodes 300HD and 400HD IP Phones Begin Microsoft Lync Compatibility Testing

- Alert) testing and qualification process ensures that third-party products are interoperable with its Lync 2012 unified communications platform.

"We're pleased to welcome AudioCodes and their 300HD and 400HD IP phones to our phone interoperability program," said Jyoti Black, senior director of Microsoft. "Once AudioCodes IP phones are qualified, partners can benefit from simplifying purchase, training, and support by procuring phones, gateways, SBAs and E-SBCs from a single vendor."

Aimed at the enterprise market, both the 300HD and 400HD series of high definition IP phones feature enhanced call quality and clarity. Once they receive Lync qualification, AudioCodes plans to release a free firmware upgrade for existing 300HD and 400HD series phones, making them immediately capable of direct integration with Lync 2010.

"We see the qualification of AudioCodes 300HD and 400HD IP Phones with Microsoft Lync as highly valuable to our partner community," said Lior Aldema, chief operating officer at AudioCodes. "Sourcing gateways, E-SBCs, IP Phones and professional services from the same vendor simplifies the purchasing, deployment and support processes, effectively reducing costs for our partners."

AudioCodes is a Microsoft Gold Unified Communication Partner and a Certified Device Partner for Unified Communications (News - Alert). As such, the company will be among a select group of Microsoft partners to be part of the Microsoft Lync Solutions Pavilion at ITEXPO (News - Alert) in Austin, Texas, from October 2-5.

All companies in the pavilion will demonstrate their Lync products and solutions.

AudioCodes is not just a Lync partner, however. For example, in August, the company's Mediant 4000 enterprise session border controller received Gensys certification.

AudioCodes is a Platinum sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO is the world’s premier IP communications event. Visit AudioCodes in booth #808. For more information on ITEXPO West 2012 click here.

Thursday Recap: OS X 10.8.1, Facebook for iOS 5.0, New Microsoft Logo

Mac and iOS users alike were blessed with updates today, with Apple pushing out the first update to OS X Mountain Lion, while Facebook finally made good on promises of a faster, higher performance mobile app at last. Meanwhile, Amazon is ready to make a big announcement on September 6 and hey, Microsoft has a new look! Read on to find out what's new for this Thursday, August 23, 2012.

Apple Releases OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1

Right on the heels of this morning's report about OS X 10.8.2 being seeded to select users, Apple has officially pushed OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 out the door, which is now available as a 24.2MB download from the Mac App Store. The release notes specifically cite resolutions for eight different issues ranging from Migration Assistant failure to Microsoft Exchange connection in Mail.app, audio playing through a Thunderbolt display and an issue with iMessages not being sent. There have also been early reports that the update improves battery life on 2012 MacBook models, so even if your specific issue isn't listed, it might be worth installing the update just to see if it fixes what ails you.

Facebook for iOS Finally Speeds Up, Now Bundles Messenger

Facebook is aiming to win back iOS users with an extensive version 5.0 update today. Claiming the app the has been rebuilt from the ground up to be "faster and easier to use," the universal Facebook 5.0 also brings improvements to scrolling through the news feed, a new banner for quickly seeing more stories without a refresh, faster opening of photos and instant access to notifications. The update also finally brings Timeline view to the iPad, although Facebook's release notes don't expressly note this rather big change. At any rate, the performance improvements alone make this a worthwhile update, so head to the App Store and grab it now. Or, you know, when you're done reading the recap...

Microsoft Gets a New Logo After 25 Years

The Official Microsoft Blog has announced a big change up in Redmond, but this time it's for the company itself rather than one of its flagship products. "In advance of one of the most significant waves of product launches in Microsoft’s history, today we are unveiling a new logo for the company," writes Microsoft's Jeffrey Meisner, who notes it's been 25 years since the last time the Windows maker tinkered with its logo. We'd have to agree that it's a good time for a refresh, considering virtually all of the company's products have received (or are about to receive) a facelift this year. So what do you think, Mac fans? Do you like the new look?

OnLive Faced "Imminent Shutdown" Prior to Financial Bailout

MercuryNews.com is reporting that the very public meltdown of OnLive nearly a week ago was apparently only the tip of the iceberg. According to Insolvency Service Group CEO Joel Weinberg, OnLive was facing "a complete shutdown of its services," with between $30 and $40 million owed to various creditors. "It was a company that was in dire straits," Weinberg explains. "It only had days to live in terms of cash flow and the like. Something had to be done immediately or there would have been a hard shutdown, which would have been a disaster." ISG is the assignee for OnLive's assignment for the benefit of creditors, which is a California alternative to bankruptcy.

Hands On with Microsoft SkyDrive

Mac users already have plenty of options when it comes to cloud storage, but over the course of the last year, a worthy opponent to Dropbox, SugarSync and Box has arrived from an unlikely source: Microsoft.

Although companies like Dropbox are generally the first place many Mac users turn to for their cloud storage needs, we're increasingly using SkyDrive instead. After all, Microsoft's cloud storage allotment is more generous than the competition, with 7GB free for new users -- and even sweeter for those of us who have had a Hotmail or Live.com account for years by keeping the previous 25GB available from the "Manage storage" option.

It certainly helps that SkyDrive is available from just about everywhere: Microsoft rolled out a slick universal iOS app last year, then followed it up by an initially clunky Mac client which has finally come into its own this month. Of course, the service is already tightly integrated with both Windows and Windows Phone, and Microsoft has promised an update for Office 2011 for Mac soon as well.

That just leaves Android and the web, with the former finally announced and coming in the next few weeks, while the latter just got a slick Windows 8-style (formerly known as "Metro-styled") overhaul only last week.

iPhone Worth More Than Everything Microsoft Makes Combined?

A recent Vanity Fair article focusing on "Microsoft's Lost Decade" has put Redmond's troubles in a very interesting light, noting that Apple's iPhone -- a product that didn't even exist until five years ago -- is now worth more than all of Microsoft's products put together.

Exactly how big is the iPhone? According to Forbes, it's worth more than all of Microsoft's products put together -- at least when you look at the numbers.

"One Apple product, something that didn’t exist five years ago, has higher sales than everything Microsoft has to offer," a recent Vanity Fair article notes. "More than Windows, Office, Xbox, Bing, Windows Phone, and every other product that Microsoft has created since 1975. In the quarter ended March 31, 2012, iPhone had sales of $22.7 billion; Microsoft Corporation, $17.4 billion."

This isn't exactly news -- after all, Apple's fortunes have been rising in recent years as its once formidable rival on the desktop front has been on the decline. But Forbes makes the argument that the iPhone is actually worth more than Microsoft, a pretty staggering claim for those of us who remember the dark days at Apple in the mid-1990's.

"Too much of the value that we ascribe to Apple is of the entire ecosystem, including the company’s reputation for style, for us to really be able to pull out separate market valuations for a specific product," the Forbes article notes.

While Apple's fortunes are soaring on the stock market, it ultimately comes down to the raw sales data -- and how Apple has managed to capitalize on it.

"And the thing is, that’s not really the most remarkable thing about Apple’s recent achievements," Forbes concludes. "The truly strange thing is that they’ve managed to gain this level of sales while making software style margins on selling hardware. That’s the trick that no one else is managing at all."

What Apple Could Learn from Microsoft

While you may be very excited about Mountain Lion and iOS 6, Apple isn’t the only company with interesting new products on the way. Microsoft is slated to release its long-awaited (and undeniably cool-looking) Windows 8 operating system for desktops later this year, with bona fide Surface tablets and a mobile release of Windows Phone 8 arriving shortly thereafter. So let’s take a look at what the competition is up to, and see where Apple could maybe learn a thing or two.

Entertainment Everywhere

Microsoft is adding new features to its Xbox media center that will make the Xbox 360 gaming console a key player in living-room entertainment. First up is the new SmartGlass interconnectivity app, which will allow users to control content via their iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile devices. It’s like a combination of the Remote app for iOS that lets you control your Apple TV and iTunes, and the TiVO app that displays essential information about what you’re watching.

SmartGlass not only lets you use the touchscreen on your mobile device as the remote control, but it also helps you discover TV shows and movies that you might be interested in. The app will even display any bonus content that’s available for the program you’re viewing, as well as who is watching with you over Xbox Live, just in case you need a friend to get through the horrible, inconclusive ending of LOST.

Microsoft also announced that users will be able to talk to its Bing search engine via the Xbox console’s mic-equipped Kinect accessory to find out where a specific show is available for streaming, so you’ll know straight away whether you can find the Battlestar Galactica series on Hulu Plus or Netflix. There are a few new content partners coming on board the Xbox platform, too, such as Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Paramount, and Univision, all of which will further bridge the gap for users who are still weighing the cost of cable versus streaming subscriptions. With on-demand access to their favorite programs from various media companies, picking a flick for movie night will be easier than ever.

While the Apple TV is a useful mediator for beaming entertainment from iTunes or an iPad to the television, it doesn’t offer enough options to be a content provider on its own. Microsoft has an edge by offering the Xbox 360 as a complete package for the living room--games, movies, television, music, and social networking--all from one remote (or in this case, controller).

Monday Recap: Google Acquiring Meebo, Microsoft at E3, Siri for iPad with iOS 6?

Now that June is in full swing, the annual E3 show kicks off this week in Los Angeles, only the first of a number of exciting (and costly to our wallet) events. By this time next week we’ll be basking in the glow of whatever Apple has deigned to show us at WWDC, and Google I/O will wrap up the busy month with their own brand of fun. Might be a good time to put those credit cards on ice, right? In the meantime, soak up some absolutely free fun with today’s recap for Monday, June 4, 2012.
