How to Automatically Open iTunes with the iPhone and iPad

by Cory Bohon 0Comments

I have set both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 to automatically open iTunes when connected to my MacBook Pro, in order to be synced. Neither of them opens iTunes, but they do open iPhoto. How do I get them to open iTunes as they should?

Open iTunes (version 10 or later), and connect your device. In the Summary tab of the device pane, disable the option to

Black iPhone 5 May Scuff Easily, Still Beats Galaxy S3 in Drop Test

by Matt Clark 2Comments

The iPhone 5, like every Cupertino-designed device, is a real eye-catcher. While adding a reliable case is an obvious choice for protecting such a high-dollar product, plenty of users will forgo physical security in the name of sleek design and a thin profile. But if you're picking up a new iPhone in black, be forewarned the aluminum back may show wear rapidly.

When Apple decided to drop the glass backing of the iPhone 4S in favor of anodized aluminum, there were immediate benefits. Chiefly, the overall weight of the iPhone 5 dropped significantly -- around 20-percent. And that's not even to mention those unsightly, spider-webbed panels thanks to one clumsy fumble.

But as with most design decisions, there are pros and cons. According to some early reports, the black iPhone 5 is extra susceptible to scratches.

A forum user at Overclockers UK (via MacRumors) decided to test out the black aluminum case, by taking a key and SIM card pin to the finish. Looking at the image -- well, it's not pretty.

New Job: Standing in Line for the iPhone 5

Charlie Hufnagel was first in line for the iPhone 5--for someone else.

It's iPhone 5 day, and Apple Stores around the country opened its doors an hour early to greet hoards of diehard Apple devotees with a new handset. It's a fairly exciting sight to see: people line up early in the morning -- some even camp out for days -- for the chance to be one of the first to get their hands on the device. Those who were queued downtown at the San Francisco Apple Store -- where I participated in the iPhone launch -- had lined up on a whim early in the morning without a pre-order to guarantee them a unit. The person at the very front of the line, however, wasn't there for his own iPhone, but to wait in line for someone else. And he was paid to do it.

iPhone 5 Pre-orders Hit 2 Million in 24 Hours, Sets New Record

It's no surprise: this is the phone we've been waiting for. Apple confirmed this morning that pre-orders of the upcoming iPhone 5 reached 2 million in just 24 hours. That number pushes the iPhone 4S pre-orders out of the top slot by nearly double. Apple also mentioned that some customers will be left behind as demand for the device is exceeding the supply.

Phil Schiller also had a bit to say about the iPhone 5 pre-orders in Apple's latest press release:

Lightning to USB Cable Sells Out, Apple Confirms No Freebies with iPhone 5

What sells out even faster than the new iPhone 5? Apparently, the new Lightning dock connector adapters, which are now showing a two-to-three week shipping delay as Apple confirms that new handset owners won't be getting a freebie.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple's new Lightning to USB Cable, which sells for $19, has sold out within a half an hour of the iPhone 5 preorders lighting up on the company's online store.

While the $29 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter and the $39 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) won't ship until next month, the cheaper Lightning to USB Cable has been mostly available since Wednesday's big announcement, but no more.

Meanwhile, The Next Web published a report earlier this morning claiming that Apple was including a free Lightning to 30-pin Adapter with each iPhone 5. Apple's online store even offered the option to buy an "additional" Lightning to 30-pin Adapter, but this appears to be in error.

"Following the publishing on this article, TNW reader Ryan Moores reached out to share clarification he received from one of Apple’s online sales representatives," the updated report reads. "According to the representative, it is 'an error' and it is 'being investigated at the moment.'"

Bummer, but at least we'll still get those swanky new EarPods as part of the package, right? Right?

Instant Survey Says Britons Want an iPhone 5

If you are Samsung (News - Alert), you can take some solace in your brand loyalty in the UK. If you are not, then the numbers are not pretty. As noted these results are less than a scientific sample, and because this is what is known as “quick fire research” it is anecdotal at best since such exercises are limited to 1,000 participants.

So who is Usurv?

As a result of my investigation of the survey, I found Usurv to be more interesting than the results of this latest poll.  There is no reason to make this complicated and that is the beauty. Here is what they do:

Phil Schiller Announces the iPhone 5, Preorders Begin Friday, In Stores Sept. 21

Following a rousing introduction by CEO Tim Cook, senior marketing VP Phil Schiller takes the stage at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco to announce the iPhone 5, which pretty much matches to a tee what has been leaked and rumored in recent weeks.

Wasting no time in a likely packed media event, Apple senior VP or market Phil Schiller has introduced the iPhone 5, which claims to be 18 percent thinner than the current iPhone 4S at only 7.6mm and 20 percent lighter than its predecessor.

As rumored, the iPhone 5 includes a new four-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio at 1136 x 640 resolution and a 326ppi Retina Display. "This is the monumental challenge we had," Schiller notes. "Can you make a phone with more features that is smaller and lighter? Anyone can make a bigger phone."

Schiller claims the iPhone 5 is designed for a user's hand, but the larger display will allow for a fifth row of icons to be displayed. All of Apple's built-in apps have already been updated for the taller display, while third-party apps yet to be updated will simply run as before with black bars taking up the extra space.

The iPhone 5 screen also includes 44 percent more color saturation and integrated touchscreen. "This is the most accurate display in the industry," Schiller boasts. "The touch sensors are integrated right into the display itself. We removed a layer and made it sharper. This is the world's most advanced display, and I couldn't be prouder of it."

Also as rumored, the iPhone 5 brings "ultrafast wireless" in the form of HSPA

EA Studios Demonstrates Real Racing 3 on iPhone 5

After being teased in recent weeks, EA Studios got a chance to share the stage with Apple at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco to demonstrate the new Real Racing 3 on the powerful iPhone 5.

Senior VP of marketing Phil Schiller followed up his introduction of the iPhone 5 by bringing EA Studios executive producer Rob Murray to the stage to show off the company's new Real Racing 3, which offers "full console quality" on Cupertino's A6-powered handset.

Rear-view mirrors have been included in Real Racing 3 for the first time, and the graphics on display appeared richer and more detailed than previous versions.

Real Racing 3 also takes advantage of time-shifted head-to-head driving through Game Center, allowing players to see competitors head of them.

"Real tracks, real cars, real people you can play against anytime you like," Murray explained at the close of the demo.

Real Racing 3 for iOS is expected by the end of 2012, with a Mac version following close behind.

Maximize Your Last-Minute iPhone Trade-In with NextWorth

Unless you've been living in a cave somewhere, you're probably aware that Apple is holding a media event on Wednesday, presumably to announce the next iPhone -- and that means now is the time to cash in on your old model.

Last week, we profiled three of your best options for trading in an old iPhone for cash to buy the iPhone 5. Since then, one of those options, Gazelle.com, has actually been eclipsed by NextWorth.com, who is offering a price lock guarantee on iPhone trade-ins through October 1 -- as well as a few more bucks in your pocket.

While current the current trade-in value for a 16GB iPhone 4S is holding at $277 at Gazelle, NextWorth is actually paying $280 for the same device.

Although that may seem like a modest bit of extra cash, NextWorth also offers a wider range of payment options, including gift cards -- and you can even take your old iPhone into a Target store nationwide and have it inspected on the spot, where you'll receive a gift card for the retailer.

NextWorth is also currently offering double rewards through its "Refer a Friend" program, which can now net users $20 simply by sharing a unique URL with your loved ones -- if they decide to use the service on their own, you'll get $20 cash instead of $10 for the referral.

The next 24 hours will be crucial for the value of your current iPhone, so now is your chance to visit NextWorth and lock in the best price -- and you can even keep using your existing handset until the one arrives, thanks to the October 1 price lock guarantee.

Rumor: T-Mobile Planning In-Store Displays to Lure Unlocked iPhone Users

All signs are pointing to T-Mobile USA again being left out in the cold when the sixth-generation iPhone is presumably revealed next week, but that doesn't mean the carrier won't have a strategy in place to combat the problem.

TmoNews is reporting that fourth-place U.S. carrier T-Mobile may soon be installing in-store displays to show off unlocked iPhones running on their 3G network in an effort to sell against Apple's forthcoming handset.

"All the intel streaming in seems to point to a 'bring your own iPhone' demonstration in store, which lines up perfectly with what T-Mobile’s been saying all along for their refarmed network," the report reveals.

T-Mobile is actively working to expand its network for 4G LTE, and in the process shift spectrum to radio bands that are compatible with the iPhone. While there are already plenty of unlocked iPhones that have retreated to T-Mobile, they've had to contend with slower EDGE data speeds due to this incompatibility.

The report claims T-Mobile store managers were "asked to activate a new micro-SIM before the end of August," which could point to the company rolling out the new initiative sometime this month.

With Apple now ready to announce their next handset on September 12, it appears T-Mobile wants to fight back by enticing iPhone owners to bring their device to the magenta network, which recently relaunched an unlimited data plan again.

iPhone 5 Start Up Video Seems Legit

by Matt Clark 2Comments

Over the past few months, Apple fans have spent plenty of time poring over allegedly leaked photos of iPhone 5 components. We've seen the longer body, the aluminum back, the NFC chip that may have been a total hoax. Regardless, Apple's September 12 event is only a week away now. But impending "official" announcements be damned, someone has posted what looks like a legitimate video of the new iPhone booting up.

Thanks to Chinese site Vgooo (via TNW), we can see the very first video of what appears to be -- ok, so it appears to be an iPhone 5 starting, then hitting an error screen. Not exactly the most exciting thing in the world.

"This device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program. If you are a member of the program, please register your device," reads the alleged iPhone 5 screen in the video.

Boring error messages notwithstanding, the video keeps up with just about every rumor on hand over the past few months. The device is noticeably taller than the iPhone 4S, and the aluminum back is in place. More importantly, the 8-pin connecter appears on the iPhone's bottom panel.

Now, let's not forget that Chinese companies are quite experienced with fabricating fake electronics devices. That said, this would seem like an awfully elaborate scheme to fool Apple fanatics. Build the entire device to spec with currently running rumors, then find a way to simulate the iOS boot up and error message. Possible to replicate? Absolutely. Likely replicated? Probably not.

Either way, we'll know the real story next week. In the meantime, we'll keep an eye out for any more iPhone 5 units that mysteriously fall off a Foxconn truck.

Yeah, right.

5 Smartphones Giving the iPhone a Run for Its Money in China

China is now the world's largest smartphone market, and the race to see which manufacturer can lead the charge to the top of the great wall of Chinese smartphone sales is on. Particularly if you can make phones that look just like the iPhone, and Apple has not gotten around to suing anyone in China--yet.

Last week, market research firm IDC emailed analysts with the latest data on who was leading the pack, and the results were not good for Cupertino. Arch-courtroom rival Samsung holds the top spot with 19 percent of the market. Apple, after launching the iPhone 4S this past January to riot-inducing excitement and immediately grabbing 19 percent of the market, has now fallen to fourth place, clinging to a 10 percent marketshare, with users desperately waiting for the new iPhone to be released.

So who is applying all of this heat in the Chinese smartphone marketplace? A bunch of manufacturers you may have never heard of with a crew of "cheap and cheerful" devices you might not have known existed.

So let's take a look some of the cooler devices that are taking Apple's Chinese lunch money.

A Widescreen iPhone Might Look Weird, But It Makes Perfect Sense

When Steve Jobs took the wraps off the iPhone back in 2007, he described it as, among other things, a "widescreen iPod with touch controls." But when we finally got our hands on one, we realized that wasn't exactly true. Sure, it was wider than any of the iPods at the time, but it wasn't quite widescreen--rather, the iPhone utilized a 3.5-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, closer to a standard-definition television set than an HD one.

But now, as we approach the sixth incarnation of Apple's iconic handset, it appears that the iPhone is indeed going full 16:9 widescreen, with a just-under-4-inch display that adds 176 pixels to its height while retaining its 640-pixel width. Besides increasing the physical length of the phone by roughly 9 millimeters (which will be more noticeable than it seems), the iPhone's alleged new display will no doubt enhance the iOS experience, with a fifth row of apps on the home screen and whatever other tricks Apple has up its sleeve.

But I'm not all that surprised Apple chose not to follow the how-big-can-we-get road paved by the Galaxy and the Nexus. If there's anything about the iPhone that sets it apart from the rest of the pack--other than its brilliant design, of course--it's the thousands of quality apps that run exclusively on iOS. Completely changing the aspect ratio wouldn't necessarily turn them away in droves, but it would certainly add a reason to consider another platform.

You see, it's not just about the new iPhone. Apple still has the iPhone 4 and 4S to worry about, and developers are not going to relish the task of suddenly designing for two vastly different resolutions. With a vertical-only change, Apple is assuring developers that designing new apps won't be any more difficult than it is today.

For one, existing apps can run as written, likely with a pair of black bars to block out the extra pixels (not unlike the iPad's pixel doubling feature). For another, adding height won't need to dramatically alter the appearance of our favorite apps. Apple is merely giving them more useable space, and I expect scrolling games like Doodle Jump and text-centric apps like Tweetbot to really take advantage of the extra real estate.

And Apple's making things even easier by bringing a feature called auto layout from OS X (in the land where where Macbook Pros are 16:10 and the 11-inch Macbook Air and iMac are true widescreen) to iOS. According to Apple's own developer notes, "Cocoa auto layout allows individual views to declare their own preferred size, which means you don't have to specify new layout if the label's text changes." In other words, the objects are smart enough to shift and scale according to the device they're on.

This process might work just as well for more width (though the data would probably get a bit scrunched), but the widescreen is a deliberate move by Apple. We all know Apple wants the iPhone to fit comfortably in our pockets, and everyone I know who has a Galaxy S III is forced to use a lame hip holster. But the main reason behind the change is Apple TV.

It's only a matter of time before Apple's streaming box is opened up to developers. Wouldn't it be something if Airplay worked both ways, and Apple TV could push content to your iPhone? Obviously, our HDTVs are 16:9, so a similar-sized handheld screen would scale Apple TV apps perfectly. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if the so-called iPad mini is widescreen, too; if not immediately then certainly within a year or two.

So don't fret about the strange-looking screen you see in all those spy photos. There's always a method behind Apple's madness, and besides, after a few days of using it, we'll all wonder how we ever lived without that fifth row of apps.
