How to Automatically Open iTunes with the iPhone and iPad

by Cory Bohon 0Comments

I have set both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 to automatically open iTunes when connected to my MacBook Pro, in order to be synced. Neither of them opens iTunes, but they do open iPhoto. How do I get them to open iTunes as they should?

Open iTunes (version 10 or later), and connect your device. In the Summary tab of the device pane, disable the option to

How to Keep iTunes from Automatically Downloading Purchased Items

It asks for my iTunes account credentials. I’ve tried to get rid of this message, but it keeps popping up every few minutes. I’ve taken the computer to the Genius Bar, but they were unable to remove the message. What can I do to stop this annoying popup?

If you don’t already have a Mac set up to automatically download your purchases from iTunes, then iTunes will request that you set up this feature. Unfortunately, it does this in a rather annoying way. But the feature is pretty handy: it automatically downloads any purchase made on any device linked to your account. So if you buy an app, movie, music, or book on your iOS device, it’s also downloaded to your computer, no syncing necessary.

Deals: Get Your iTunes in Order with TuneUp

A well organized iTunes is a thing of absolute beauty. Album information fully filled out, artist names completely in order, no duplicates listed--it's enough to bring a single tear to your eye. Unfortunately, none of our iTunes libraries look anything like this. They're disorganized, searchable only by us because we understand the cryptology that is behind our methods. Cut down on your attempts to decipher of your code with TuneUp. It's the ultimate iTunes add-on, and it's on sale now.

TuneUp is extremely powerful iTunes management tool that will clean up, organize, and complete missing fields in your library. Through some sort of technological magic, TuneUp will correct mislabeled or incomplete song data, scour the web for proper cover art, removes duplicate songs, and pulls in extra artist information that you'd otherwise have to enter by hand. It turns your iTunes into the media library you always planned to make it--with no effort on your part.

TuneUp's usual ticket price is $50. While it's well-worth it at full cost, why pay it if you don't have to? We've slashed the price by 40%, making it a more than reasonable $30. An excellent price for an awesome app. Get it today.

Eddy Cue Introduces Changes to iTunes, All-New Version Coming in October

If a new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 aren't enough to get you excited about Apple's media event in San Francisco on Wednesday, the company has even more in store with changes to iTunes and the iPod.

Following the introduction of the iPhone 5 with iOS 6, Apple CEO Tim Cook invited senior VP Eddy Cue to the stage to talk about iTunes, which the company is making some big changes to.

With the iTunes Store now available in 63 countries worldwide, Cue unveiled a new design for the iOS version of the store, which runs across all categories offered. Facebook "likes" are now integrated into every product offering, and users can preview songs while browsing -- all included with iOS 6 when it launches on September 19.

Cue notes that 200 million customers are now enjoying iTunes in the Cloud, which is why Apple today introduces a new version of iTunes coming in October, with a new edge-to-edge design that marks the first major departure from the classic design we all know and love.

New features include a drop down menu in the currently playing field, which allows users to see upcoming songs no matter where they are inside the app. A new mini-player design is also on deck, allowing users to manage playlists and upcoming songs. iCloud is now built right into iTunes, which offers a cleaner, easier to navigate look.

Unfortunately, we'll all have to wait a bit to see the new iTunes, which Cue announced as available in October.

Apple Releases iTunes 10.7, Ready for iOS 6 and New Models

Although we would prefer to be downloading the all-new iTunes that Eddy Cue showed off at today's Apple event in San Francisco, Cupertino is pushing a modest 10.7 update to the existing version for iOS 6 compatibility.

Apple has released iTunes 10.7, and despite the full version number, this is a minor update and not the swanky new edge-to-edge version demonstrated at Apple's media event on Wednesday.

That said, you'll want to download iTunes 10.7 if you're planning to pick up a new iPhone 5 next week, or plan to preorder one of those slick new iPods.

"iTunes 10.7 adds support for iOS 6 running on compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models," the release notes read. "This update also adds support for the latest iPod nano and iPod shuffle models."

iOS 6 arrives on those aforementioned compatible devices next Wednesday, September 19, so be sure to download and install iTunes 10.7 before then so you'll be ready to go.

Thursday Recap: iTunes in the Cloud Expansion, Google Q2, Pocket Raises $5 Mil

Companies are releasing their Q2 2012 financials left and right this week, but of course the one we're really waiting for is Apple's, which will swoop in next Tuesday, presumably ahead of the release of OS X Mountain Lion. Meanwhile, Cupertino is blasting out iTunes in the Cloud in a ton of new countries and Microsoft sets a date for Windows 8 -- all in today's recap for Thursday, July 19, 2012.

iTunes in the Cloud Spreads Its Wings to More Than 50 Countries

MacRumors is reporting that Apple has started rolling out iTunes in the Cloud to a ton of new countries today, in addition to debuting iTunes Match in Hungary and Poland. While there are more than 50 countries now capable of using iTunes in the Cloud to access music and music videos, a big group just gained the ability to access movies the same way for the first time, including Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia in Europe; Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela in Latin America; and Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam in the Asia-Pacific markets.

Mo' Money, Mo' Money, Mo' Money! Google Announces Q2 2012 Financials

Google is still a cash machine, as indicated by its Investor Relations website today and the posting of its Q2 2012 financial results. "Google standalone had a strong quarter with 21 percent year-on-year revenue growth, and we launched a bunch of exciting new products at I/O -- in particular the Nexus 7 tablet, which has received rave reviews,

20th Century Fox Movies Now Included with iTunes in the Cloud Downloads

Apple beefed up its international audience for iTunes in the Cloud this week, adding 37 more countries capable of downloading their movie purchases again. But Cupertino didn't stop there, quietly pulling the trigger on the same feature for 20th Century Fox titles as well.

9to5Mac is reporting that movies released by 20th Century Fox are now part of the iTunes in the Cloud experience. Sure enough, we fired up our iPad this morning to discover digital copies of both Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Marley & Me (hey, don't judge us!) now available for redownloading on our Mac or iOS devices.

As you may recall, Apple announced iTunes in the Cloud support for movies back in March, but both Fox and Universal were missing in action. Universal eventually came around, and it seems 20th Century Fox is also now on board.

The holdup stemmed from an HBO window in place with both studios dating back to the early cable days, a delay that got worked out back in April, which is when Universal gave the green light for its titles to be included in the service.

With all of the major studios on board, iTunes now becomes a much more attractive option for movie buyers. Buy a title once and delete it when you're done to save space on your hard drive, all while enjoying the ability to download it again any time or even stream it directly to your Apple TV.

Now if Apple would come up with some kind of iTunes Match-style service for converting our old DVDs and Blu-rays into digital downloads, sort of like what Vudu and Walmart are doing...

Complaints of iTunes Sync Issues Cropping Up in Apple Discussion Forums

It's not quite as well-publicized as Antennagate or all those "overheating" iPads, but there's an annoying little issue still prevalent in iOS 5 that you might have experienced. It's hard to pin down the cause--although Apple's discussion boards are filled with complaints from photo junkies--but if you've ever gotten stuck on the "Waiting for items to copy" step of an iTunes sync, you're not alone.

For most of us (this writer included) it's an occasional nuisance. It generally pops up at the end of a lengthy sync but there doesn't seem to be a consistent culprit. Apple's discussion boards are filled with complaints about the so-called iTunes sync bug, with situations ranging from genius results to large photo libraries. It seems to be a bit more prevalent on Windows, but there are certainly a healthy share of Mac users at their wits' end, too.

We haven't come across a cure-all for this bug--and as long as Apple officially ignores it as a problem worth fixing, we doubt there will be one--but we can offer a few ideas to help fix it. The first, and most obvious, is to download the most recent version of iTunes (it was updated to 10.6.3 just a few weeks ago), back up your iPhone and restore it to factory settings. But this doesn't work for everybody.

As pschlimgen writes:

"iTunes locks up at the 'Waiting for Changes to be applied' when synching my phone. As I mentioned I have totally uninstalled and reinstalled ALL apple software on my laptop. I have done a complete Factory Restore my phone. ... I reinstalled with a fresh download of iTunes.  And I deleted my iTunes library."

If that doesn't work, there are a few more options. If photos seem to be your hang up, a pretty reliable fix is to delete the iPod Photo Cache folder. Head over to your Pictures folder and right-click on the iPhoto Library to "Show Package Contents." Once inside, find the iPod Photo Cache, delete it and empty the trash. Then try your sync again.

You can also try this multi-stepfix from dmwhk, via Apple tech support:

1. Disconnect iPad (or iPhone)
2. Launch iTunes. Under Edit/Preferences/Devices, check "Prevent ... from syncing automatically"
3. Close iTunes
4. Reopen iTunes
5. Reconnect iPad (iPhone)
6. Right-click on the (device's) name and choose "Reset warnings"
7. Unsync photos to clear any stored images
8. Reselect folders and sync again.

Alternately, you can try turning off Genius, disabling ringtone syncing or, possibly the strangest solution, deleting any voice memos you may have stored in your iTunes library. If all else fails, try syncing one tab at a time (first photos, then music, etc.) and see if that breaks the logjam.

Last but not least is this gem from tmel4198:

"MAKE SURE iTunes is up to date; in iTunes uncheck 'Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected.' ... Exit iTunes and reopen, check 'Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected.' Exit iTunes again and plug in your iPhone. Wait for iTunes to open and quit the (automatic) sync. Go to the Help menu and click "Run Diagnostics." Do a full diagnostics check to see if everything is OK, then right-click your iPhone ... let it back up and once done you shall be able to sync normal again!!!"

We know, that's an awful complex fix for a bug Apple doesn't deem important enough to correct. Here's hoping iOS 6 squashed it once and for all.

Apple Launches iTunes Store in 12 Asian Countries

It may seem hard to believe for those of us who take it for granted, but there are still many parts of the world where the iTunes Store is not available. Thankfully, there are now 12 less places without it across Asia today.

Apple announced the launch of the iTunes Store in 12 countries across Asia on Thursday, which includes "an incredible selection of local and international music from all the major labels and thousands of independent labels."

Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are the headliner countries where local artists such as Jay Chou, Girls Generation and Andy Lau now mix it up with international artists including ADELE, The Beatles and Jason Mraz, and world-renowned classical musicians including Lang Lang, Yo Yo Ma and Yuja Wang."

"Apple is bringing the iTunes Store to music fans in Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam," Apple also noted in its press release on Thursday. "Customers can also rent or purchase movies from the iTunes Store, with many available in stunning HD, from major studios including 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. The iTunes Store joins the revolutionary App Store which offers more than 650,000 apps to consumers in 155 countries."

Customers in these 12 Asian countries can now choose from over 20 million songs available to purchase and download via the iTunes Store, and will also enjoy the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for downloading previously purchased content as well as the optional iTunes Match for storing a user's entire music library in the cloud.

New iTunes Store users in these countries will need iTunes 10.6.3 for Mac or Windows (a free download from Apple's website), and iTunes Store purchases require a valid credit card with a billing address in the country where they reside.

New Yorker Claims iTunes Double Billing, Seeks Class Action Lawsuit

A New Yorker is suing Apple, claiming the company double billed him for an iTunes music purchase and then refused to offer a refund, citing its own Terms of Service -- and if he gets his way, it will become a class action.

Justia.com is reporting that New York resident Robert Herskowitz is all fired up at Apple and the iTunes Store, which he claims charged his account twice for the same song. After finding no love with iTunes support, he’s decided to sue the company and is now seeking class-action status for his lawsuit.

As soon as Herskowitz found the duplicate charge, he claims to have contacted iTunes support. The following day, he received a response -- but it certainly wasn’t the one he was hoping for.

Universal Movies Now Available for Re-Download via iTunes in the Cloud

iTunes in the Cloud got way cooler with the launch of the new iPad last month, when Apple announced that movies could now be re-downloaded from any device using your iCloud account. Unfortunately, HBO restrictions held Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox back from joining the party -- but progress is finally being made.

AppleInsider reported over the weekend that feature films released from Universal Pictures have quietly become part of iTunes in the Cloud’s new ability to re-download from any device logged into a user’s iCloud account. That leaves 20th Century Fox as the only major studio sitting on the sidelines, despite a recent report that HBO restrictions preventing the studio from participating have been lifted.
