Free App Friday: Pocket Tanks

For me, high school consisted of using my MacBook Pro in class to play one game, and one game only: Pocket Tanks! I don't remember a single day in the second half of my high school career that I didn't play this. So, imagine my delight, when it showed up in the iTunes App Store.

Earlier in July, Blitwise updated the app to make it faster for older generation iOS devices and optimize its performance on the iOS device. The app is offered as a free version featuring 35 different weapons, though you can shell out an extra $4.99 for 75 more. The free version is great, but when you become addicted to this game, you'll see that 35 weapons just doesn't satisfy that barbaric need to destroy the other team's tank!

Pocket Tanks for iPhone looks simliar to its OS X counterpart, so it's easy to just pick up and start playing. The game never gets old, and you are always faced with a new challenge as no two scenarios are alike. Test your memory, digital depth perception, and shot accuracy with this incredible version of the all-star Mac game. You can also play with a buddy in pass 'n' play mode.

After two years, I don't use any other third-party app as consistently as I once did, except for Pocket Tanks.

Free App Friday: Pocket Schedule Free

As a student, I'm always looking for a quick, easy, and, more importantly, mobile way to access my schedule of class, assignments, and social life. With Pocket Schedule Free, I've found that perfect app that is both affordable and powerful.

With its incredibly easy user interface. Pocket Schedule Free makes it easy to add and manage all of your courses for each semester. You can always refer back to a previous semester's schedule and adding assignments, tests, and social events is just as simple. Simply click the plus icon in the top right hand corner and to add a class, exam, event, or task.

Once you've added your courses you can set class times. Everything is color-coded which makes it easier to quickly glance at your daily plan. You can also add instructor information like email and phone numbers to your courses and set up locations and reminders all from within the app. And, you can mark the more important assignments with a priority mark. Basically, Pocket Schedule Free makes my college life easier and more manageable.

Thursday Recap: iTunes in the Cloud Expansion, Google Q2, Pocket Raises $5 Mil

Companies are releasing their Q2 2012 financials left and right this week, but of course the one we're really waiting for is Apple's, which will swoop in next Tuesday, presumably ahead of the release of OS X Mountain Lion. iTunes in the Cloud Spreads Its Wings to More Than 50 Countries

MacRumors is reporting that Apple has started rolling out iTunes in the Cloud to a ton of new countries today, in addition to debuting iTunes Match in Hungary and Poland. While there are more than 50 countries now capable of using iTunes in the Cloud to access music and music videos, a big group just gained the ability to access movies the same way for the first time, including Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia in Europe; Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela in Latin America; and Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam in the Asia-Pacific markets.

A follow-up to the popular Tiny Tower, NimbleBit's Pocket Planes offers a charming, well-presented take on airline management that kept me hooked for hours, ferrying passengers and cargo from one place to another in planes of varying capacity, range, and speed.

You choose who or what travels on a flight, from a list sorted according to fare, then plot out a route on the map. Everything takes a fair bit of real time, so you'll probably hop in and out of the game several times a day to set new batches of Bitizens off to the skies. Each trip earns you coins, which enable you to expand your airline's global reach with new or upgraded airports, with the number of airports you can own capped by your current level. Sometimes you also get bux, which can be used to buy more planes or parts from the market, upgrade your existing fleet, rush a flight to its destination, or deck out your pilots in swanky new costumes.
