Apple Unleashes OS X Mountain Lion into Mac App Store
Apple has released OS X Mountain Lion to the Mac App Store and as promised, the upgrade is a mere $19.99.
"OS X Mountain Lion is the latest release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system," the app description reads. "Mountain Lion includes over 200 new features to update your Mac into the best computing experience yet. With the new Messages app you can send text, photos, videos, contacts, web links, and documents to anyone using another Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- you can even start a conversation on one device and continue it on another.
"The new Share button makes it easy to share files, web pages, photos, and videos, as well as tweet right from the app you are using," the description continues. "With the Reminders app you can create to-do lists and alerts that appear in the new Notification Center. With Notes you can write down all your ideas and even speak your words with voice dictation. Play head to head games on your Mac with friends on their Macs or iOS devices with Game Center. And with iCloud built in, it’s simple to keep all your mail, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, to do lists, music, photos, iWork files, PDFs, and more up to date across all your devices."
Okay, enough of that -- you know you want it, so hit the link and get downloading!

Official Dark Knight Rises Game Swoops into App Store
Gamelot released an official The Dark Knight Rises game on the App Store Friday, perfectly timed for the theatrical debut of Christopher Nolan's final chapter of the Batman trilogy.
"After being gone for eight years, Bruce Wayne gets back into action as Batman," the app description teases. "Waiting for him are the mysterious Selina Kyle, and Bane, a lethal adversary on a crusade to tear apart Batman’s legacy piece by piece. Meet all of Batman’s allies and regain your strength to protect Gotham City from Bane. Become completely immersed in the story thanks to likenesses of all the movie’s main characters like Catwoman, Lucius Fox and Commissioner Gordon."
Judging from the screenshots on the App Store, The Dark Knight Rises looks like a very worthy followup to Gameloft's recent The Amazing Spider-Man game, allowing players to journey into "dozens of missions plus random events" to "make you feel all the thrill of being a superhero" (presumably, without any of the Bruce Wayne-style brooding and suffering that comes afterward).
The Dark Knight Rises is now available for $6.99 from the App Store; the universal app is an 819MB download compatible with all devices running iOS 4.0 or later.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Appeal Denied, Google Pulls Handset from Play Store
Last Friday, Federal Judge Lucy Koh put the smackdown on Samsung, granting Apple's request for a preliminary injunction against Google's flagship Galaxy Nexus smartphone. Samsung quickly appealed, but Koh fired back with a flat-out denial, effectively banning the sale of the Android 4.0 handset.
Although Google hopes to dodge the patent infringement issue with an over-the-air software patch that could arrive anytime, The Verge is reporting that the search giant has already pulled the device from its virtual store shelves on Google Play, where the Galaxy Nexus is simply listed as "coming soon" (as shown above).
But that issue may only be temporary, with Google now claiming the handset will start shipping again next week -- with Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" preinstalled, which presumably addresses Apple's complaints. The HSPA

Major Improvements Coming to Apple Store, Including Genius Bar Expansion
To most, Steve Jobs’ legacy is in the form of the iPod, iPhone, and the iPad, but to the analyst Steve Jobs’ greatest accomplishment was his conquering of the retail world.
As Apple users, we all know the wave of excitement that comes with a trip to the Apple Store. The atmosphere is enough to get us going, especially with all those Apple products atop their birchwood thrones. The store sets standards for what retailers should strive for. Every employee has a unique knowledge of everything Apple. And while you can usually find this at other technology outlets and big box brick and mortar stores, what sets the Apple Store apart from all the others is the incredible expertise of the Apple Genius Bar.
To date, Apple has had a one sided station where "Geniuses" would sit at one end, and the patron at the other. However, as ifoAppleStore.com reported this morning via concept photo, Apple is planning on changing the whole scope of the Genius Bar layout.
Daily, the Genius Bar gets more attraction then any other part of the Apple Store. In some stores, the Genius Bar can host up to about six people. Others can hold twenty. In an effort to improve services, Apple has decided to rotate the bar 90 degrees, allowing for two sides of the table to be used. That means more people serviced in the same amount of time. This rotation also allows Geniuses and costumers to be on the same side of the bar, creating the same atmosphere as the retail assistant’s experience.
Apple has yet to confirm or deny this report.

Apple Launches iTunes Store in 12 Asian Countries
Apple announced the launch of the iTunes Store in 12 countries across Asia on Thursday, which includes "an incredible selection of local and international music from all the major labels and thousands of independent labels."
Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are the headliner countries where local artists such as Jay Chou, Girls Generation and Andy Lau now mix it up with international artists including ADELE, The Beatles and Jason Mraz, and world-renowned classical musicians including Lang Lang, Yo Yo Ma and Yuja Wang."
"Apple is bringing the iTunes Store to music fans in Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam," Apple also noted in its press release on Thursday. "Customers can also rent or purchase movies from the iTunes Store, with many available in stunning HD, from major studios including 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. The iTunes Store joins the revolutionary App Store which offers more than 650,000 apps to consumers in 155 countries."
Customers in these 12 Asian countries can now choose from over 20 million songs available to purchase and download via the iTunes Store, and will also enjoy the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for downloading previously purchased content as well as the optional iTunes Match for storing a user's entire music library in the cloud.
New iTunes Store users in these countries will need iTunes 10.6.3 for Mac or Windows (a free download from Apple's website), and iTunes Store purchases require a valid credit card with a billing address in the country where they reside.

TextExpander 4 Available, Skips Mac App Store Due to Sandboxing Requirement
Smile Software has announced the availability of TextExpander 4, a major update to its popular Mac typing shortcut tool that promises to automate even more of your keystrokes.
Version 4 includes a new option for "fill-in-the-blank" snippets, which come in handy for form letters that can be personalized with names, dates and other information once expanded. Fill-ins are also available for multi-line text fields, popup menus for multiple choices and optional text blocks that can be added as needed.
TextExpander 4 also introduces a new Snippet Creation Assistant, a step-by-step method for creating your own snippets based on individual needs.
"TextExpander users are incredibly creative at finding new ways of automating their work," said Greg Scown, TextExpander developer and Smile founder. "With the additional fill-in snippet options, we've given them even more ways to do that."
Unfortunately, all of TextExpander 4's goodness comes with one caveat: Due to the Mac App Store's new sandboxing requirement, the app cannot be sold there and must be purchased directly from Smile.
"Because TextExpander 4 cannot be 'sandboxed,' it is not available on the Mac App Store," the release notes explain. "TextExpander 4 is signed with a Developer ID from Apple to meet the requirements of Gatekeeper in the forthcoming OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)."
Thankfully, upgrades from earlier versions are only $15 (free if you've purchased after January 15, 2012), which includes the Mac App Store version. New customers can purchase for $34.95, and Family Pack and Office Pack licenses are also available. Purchases can be made at the company's website or directly from within the app itself.

Congress Grilling 34 App Store Developers Over User Privacy
Ars Technica is reporting that House representatives Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Fred Upton (R-MI) have sent a joint letter to 34 App Store developers who specialize in social apps. According to the letter, the idea is to "better understand what, if any, information these particular apps gather, what they do with it, and what notice they provide to app users."
Ironically, the 34 developers include Apple CEO Tim Cook, since the company’s Find My Friends app is all about sharing your location with other people. The others weren’t chosen because they’re guilty of any privacy sins -- instead, they were handpicked from the
