AudioCodes 300HD and 400HD IP Phones Begin Microsoft Lync Compatibility Testing

- Alert) testing and qualification process ensures that third-party products are interoperable with its Lync 2012 unified communications platform.

"We're pleased to welcome AudioCodes and their 300HD and 400HD IP phones to our phone interoperability program," said Jyoti Black, senior director of Microsoft. "Once AudioCodes IP phones are qualified, partners can benefit from simplifying purchase, training, and support by procuring phones, gateways, SBAs and E-SBCs from a single vendor."

Aimed at the enterprise market, both the 300HD and 400HD series of high definition IP phones feature enhanced call quality and clarity. Once they receive Lync qualification, AudioCodes plans to release a free firmware upgrade for existing 300HD and 400HD series phones, making them immediately capable of direct integration with Lync 2010.

"We see the qualification of AudioCodes 300HD and 400HD IP Phones with Microsoft Lync as highly valuable to our partner community," said Lior Aldema, chief operating officer at AudioCodes. "Sourcing gateways, E-SBCs, IP Phones and professional services from the same vendor simplifies the purchasing, deployment and support processes, effectively reducing costs for our partners."

AudioCodes is a Microsoft Gold Unified Communication Partner and a Certified Device Partner for Unified Communications (News - Alert). As such, the company will be among a select group of Microsoft partners to be part of the Microsoft Lync Solutions Pavilion at ITEXPO (News - Alert) in Austin, Texas, from October 2-5.

All companies in the pavilion will demonstrate their Lync products and solutions.

AudioCodes is not just a Lync partner, however. For example, in August, the company's Mediant 4000 enterprise session border controller received Gensys certification.

AudioCodes is a Platinum sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO is the world’s premier IP communications event. Visit AudioCodes in booth #808. For more information on ITEXPO West 2012 click here.

ACLU Study Finds Many Law Enforcement Agencies Use Cell Phones to Track

By Ashok Bindra , TechZone360 Contributor
Tweet Share

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), many US police departments use cell phones, often without court orders, to find suspects and investigate criminal cases. The ACLU survey indicates that "the overwhelming majority of law enforcement agencies that responded engage in at least some cell phone tracking." The results of this survey were posted on Yahoo! News site.

The survey shows that "most law enforcement agencies that responded engage in cell phone tracking for investigative purposes. Even those that have not tracked cell phones in the course of a criminal investigation have tracked cell phones in emergencies, for example to locate a missing person."

As per the study, the use of phone tracking, using GPS or other technology to locate people through their cell phones, is a murky legal area. According to the study, the US Supreme Court has held that the use of GPS devices placed by police on a suspect's car constitutes an "unreasonable search" under the constitution. Despite the law, cell phone tracking is still making its way through the courts, per ACLU study reported on Yahoo! News site.

In fact, according to the report, several members of Congress have introduced bills calling for "location privacy" to be respected by police, except in cases of emergency.

For this study, ACLU surveyed more than 200 law enforcement agencies. The survey shows disturbing results, with few police departments seeking warrants and unclear or inconsistent legal standards, depending on the jurisdiction, wrote Yahoo! News.

The Yahoo! News report quoted ACLU attorney Catherine Crump as saying, "What we have learned is disturbing. The government should have to get a warrant before tracking cell phones. That is what is necessary to protect Americans' privacy, and it is also what is required under the constitution." "The fact that some law enforcement agencies do get warrants shows that a probable cause requirement is a completely reasonable and workable policy, allowing police to protect both public safety and privacy."

Wind Currents Communications Introduces V2VIP Video Phones

By Ray DeckTMCnet Contributing Writer Share

Enterprise VoIP solutions are a vast and diverse as any telecommunications market, but Wind Currents Communications brings something new to the table in its offering of V2VIP video phones. The six year old company has announced a product that is dramatically cheaper than other videoconferencing systems and has a major features advantage on any other telephone hardware against which is might compete.

Capitalizing on the rise in gas prices, Wind Currents is marketing their video phones as a cost-effective alternative to in-person meetings, though they are more likely to steal market share from Cisco, GoToMeeting Telepresence (News - Alert) and other videoconferencing services than they are from airlines. The video phone offers a 7” color LCD screen that transmits 30 frames per second of video while still allowing for crisp extension to extension, national or global calling to any standard telephone.

Wind Currents specializes in both voice and Voice over IP solutions for medium sized businesses, and prides itself in cost-effective business bundles. Most of Wind Currents’ customers conduct telemedicine and telehealthcare through the video phone products. This solution fits into a nice niche that is more reliable than Skype (News

SIP Phones Company Panasonic Makes Big Splash at Trade Show

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

For some companies, the Channel Partners Conference – taking place this week from March 26-29 in Las Vegas, Nev. – is a place to network at an event held exclusively for indirect sales organizations, spread the word about their new offerings and attend sessions that address that daily challenges of partners.

But for SIP phones provider Panasonic (News - Alert), the trade show gives the company a forum to shed light on so many new innovations it has brought to the market in just three short months – from its introduction of the first SIP open source-based operating system desk phone to the announcement of its soon-to-be-released UT248 SIP phone, a dynamic, executive level SIP phone.

“As with any event we attend, we are looking forward to offer a look at our full line of communications solutions and demonstrate the value our products play for businesses,” Kim Murtagh, product manager, SIP Endpoints, Panasonic System Networks Company of North America, told TMCnet. “We offer state-of-the-art SIP telephony solutions for end-users that are reliable, flexible and cost-effective. “

“Panasonic has been attending Channel Partners for three years and participating in Channel Partners allows us to meet face-to-face with customers and explain to them the true value of Panasonic SIP communication solutions and discuss with them the upcoming technology trends that can help support their business need,” she added. One of Panasonic’s main goals at the event is to connect with its existing and new customers and discuss its products and the overall business solutions. By meeting face to face with customers, Panasonic hopes to gain additional insight into the communications wants and needs of end-users, Murtagh said.

Also at the event, the SIP end points enabler had some exciting news to share as today the company announced that its Panasonic SIP KX-TGP500 Phone (News - Alert) System, which offers Internet HD VoIP voice calls along with conventional business phone functionality to SMBs and enterprises, has received interoperability certification from Star2Star Communications (News - Alert). The integration will add more credibility to the Panasonic SIP KX-TGP500 and help the Japanese electronics giant further capture the DECT cordless telephone market, according to company officials.

Visitors to the Panasonic booth will also get a first look of Panasonic’s new KX-UT248 Executive Desk Phone, which will be launching next month.

Panasonic’s latest SIP phone innovation boasts a number of benefits including six lines, a 4.4-inch dynamic screen, soft keys labels so that you can program 24 buttons in the phone, and support for an XML interface so that Panasonic’s hosted provider and open source dealer customers can co-brand the phone if they wish. Moreover, the latest phone offers two Gigabit ports in the back, support for built-in Bluetooth, a 2.5 millimeter headset jack, and a built-in electronic hook switch.

So what overarching message does Panasonic hope to spread at the event?

“Our SIP portfolio has grown tremendously in the past year and we are continually adding new products that enhance our overall product lineup,” Murtagh said. “We want customers to see the breadth of business communications solutions which Panasonic offers and realize the reliability, flexibility and afford ability which our solutions offer.”

TMCnet SIP Phones Week in Review

By Ashok BindraTMCnet Contributor

Major announcements in the SIP Phones sector this past week came from Panasonic (News - Alert) Corp., Panasonic System Networks, Toshiba America Information Systems, and AT&T.

Expanding market for mobile devices and rising requirement for higher data transfer speeds has prompted consumer electronics giant Panasonic Corp. to develop a new chipset for multi-gigabit millimeter wave wireless communications. As per the report, the chipset features a new baseband processing architecture that reduces power consumption to less than 1 Watt, and helps establish stable communication between different devices, based on the WiGig Alliance (News - Alert) specifications. The chipset also includes an extra radio packet processing block, speeding the realization of high-definition or HD video data sharing and streaming applications for mobile devices.

TMCnet also reported that SIP phones provider Panasonic celebrated interoperability with Centile (News - Alert) Telecom. Panasonic System Communications Company Europe (PSCEU) announced certification for interoperability of the KX-UT series of SIP telephones with Centile’s Istra platform. To achieve this capability, Panasonic’s KX-UT series had to undergo a rigorous set of interoperability tests, encompassing basic functionality, advanced calling features, and automatic provisioning with the Centile Istra solution. According to the report, the certification guarantees that the phone can deliver maximum usability and productivity for end users and low-maintenance service delivery.

Recently, Panasonic expanded the KX-UT line with the addition of KX-UT670 SmartDesk phone and plans to add another SIP phone to the family in a few weeks.

In his column, senior editor Peter Bernstein highlighted reasons why small to medium sized businesses (SMBs) are moving their voice communications out of the telecom closets and into the cloud. Based on data supplied by Panasonic, the senior editor confirmed that time-to-deployment and lower cost were the biggest and most obvious drivers of cloud-based solutions.

TMCnet also reported that Toshiba (News
