Qualcomm Takes Top Slot in Telematics Study, MiX Making Up Ground Quickly

- Alert) scored so highly in this latest study. The field is still quite spread out, as Qualcomm holds just six percent of the market. That is still a great deal larger than the company’s closest competitors.

ABI did note one up-and-coming company that is still in the back of the pack, but making progress. MiX Telematics finished seventh in the recent survey but ABI is labeling the company as “one to watch” thanks to how quickly it actually is climbing up the charts.

One ABI Research analysts was bullish on MiX in a recent press release saying, “Having recently moved beyond its South African home market into the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States, while also expanding its European base, the company’s regional coverage is improving. This, in addition to the fact that features such as real-time traffic and turn-by-turn navigation are now finding their way into MiX’s solutions means that the company is sure to rank even higher next time around.”

ACLU Study Finds Many Law Enforcement Agencies Use Cell Phones to Track

By Ashok Bindra , TechZone360 Contributor
Tweet Share

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), many US police departments use cell phones, often without court orders, to find suspects and investigate criminal cases. The ACLU survey indicates that "the overwhelming majority of law enforcement agencies that responded engage in at least some cell phone tracking." The results of this survey were posted on Yahoo! News site.

The survey shows that "most law enforcement agencies that responded engage in cell phone tracking for investigative purposes. Even those that have not tracked cell phones in the course of a criminal investigation have tracked cell phones in emergencies, for example to locate a missing person."

As per the study, the use of phone tracking, using GPS or other technology to locate people through their cell phones, is a murky legal area. According to the study, the US Supreme Court has held that the use of GPS devices placed by police on a suspect's car constitutes an "unreasonable search" under the constitution. Despite the law, cell phone tracking is still making its way through the courts, per ACLU study reported on Yahoo! News site.

In fact, according to the report, several members of Congress have introduced bills calling for "location privacy" to be respected by police, except in cases of emergency.

For this study, ACLU surveyed more than 200 law enforcement agencies. The survey shows disturbing results, with few police departments seeking warrants and unclear or inconsistent legal standards, depending on the jurisdiction, wrote Yahoo! News.

The Yahoo! News report quoted ACLU attorney Catherine Crump as saying, "What we have learned is disturbing. The government should have to get a warrant before tracking cell phones. That is what is necessary to protect Americans' privacy, and it is also what is required under the constitution." "The fact that some law enforcement agencies do get warrants shows that a probable cause requirement is a completely reasonable and workable policy, allowing police to protect both public safety and privacy."

JICA Awards ICT Modernization Study Contract to Fujitsu and Others

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

A teaming up of the Daiwa Institute of Research, NTT (News - Alert) Data and Fujitsu Limited has earned the three companies the important task of studying the work that would need to be done in order to modernize Myanmar's Financial Information and Communication technology (ICT). The contract that awarded the study was handed out by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). There is no telling just how long or how truly costly the study will be, but there seems to be an almost uniform agreement throughout the region that Myanmar badly needs some form of modernization of its ICT systems if it wants to compete on a global scale.

President U Thein Sein is leading Myanmar’s charge towards reforms in almost anything that the government has a hand in. Sein is leading a reformation of the country's political system, its economy and its society in general. Myanmar is also starting to encourage investment and the development of a market system. The country is trying its best to actually be a player in global markets, rather than just the observer they have been up until now.

Myanmar knows that one of the only ways they are ever really going to be a player is to update its ICT systems. ICT systems are well known as an incredibly important part of any fundamental infrastructure, and will be necessary to support the operation of the Myanmar's central bank, state-owned banks, commercial banks, the interbank network, the stock exchange, and securities firms. With a modern ICT system in place, there really isn't a point for the country to undertake any other changes. In a very real sense, having a modernized ICT system should be the first step towards any other goals.

That is why this particular study is so important for the country and for the region in general. By entrusting the study to Daiwa, NTT and Fujitsu (News - Alert), JICA is hoping that these top of their field entities will be able to come back with information that can be acted on right away. Should the results merit it, the team, along with JICA, will help support the modernization process.

New Study Shows Microsoft Continues to be the Market Leader in the Enterprise Messaging and Collaboration Market

- Alert) continues to lead the pack in the Enterprise Messaging and Collaboration market with its Microsoft Exchange Server email platform deployed either as an on-premises or a cloud-based solution, according to a just released study by The Radicati Group (News - Alert).

The Radicati Group provides research on messaging and collaboration, security, email archiving, regulatory compliance, wireless technologies, Web services, identity management, instant messaging, unified communications, voice over IP, and more.

In the company’s latest study entitled, "Microsoft Exchange Server and Outlook Market Analysis, 2012-2016," The Radicati Group noted that despite the growing popularity of cloud-based computing, on-premise Microsoft Exchange Server deployments still currently account for the majority of Microsoft Exchange Server email hosting mailboxes worldwide.

The Radicati Group in the study provides an in-depth analysis of the penetration of the Microsoft Exchange Server messaging and collaboration platform and its email client Microsoft Outlook, in the enterprise on-premise and cloud-based Messaging and Collaboration market.

According to the study, by the end of 2016 the market share of on-premise Microsoft Exchange Server mailboxes is expected to show a significant decrease, mainly due to the continuing trend of outsourcing email to hosted and managed providers.

Microsoft's own Office 365 solution, in particular, is expected to drive most of this growth.

The report provides detailed installed base breakouts and four year growth forecasts for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Outlook 2010, and Microsoft Outlook Web App (OWA).

In another study from the company titled, “Microsoft SharePoint Market Analysis, 2012-2016,”,it highlighted a comprehensive analysis of Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 as on-premises as well as cloud-based solutions, as well as Microsoft SharePoint Online offered as part of Microsoft Office 365.

The report provides extensive data regarding installed base, revenues, and four year forecasts broken out by version, region and business size for Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and cloud-based Microsoft SharePoint solutions.
