China Telecom Deploys Acme Packet's Net-Net Session Director SBCs

- Alert) SBCs and Net-Net Session-aware Load Balancers across some of the cities. By deploying the Acme Packet, China Telecom will receive support for both consumer voice over IP (VoIP) and hosted enterprise unified communications (UC) services offered by the company.

“As China's largest communications service provider, China Telecom will serve as a leader in providing next-generation communications across the country through its IMS deployment,” said Tim Ziemer, vice president of North America and Asia Pacific Japan sales at Acme Packet. “Our SBCs will securely streamline China Telecom's IMS initiatives to deliver next-generation voice, video and UC services to subscribers, and also support mobile applications in the future."

China Telecom’s customers can save cost via Acme Packet's scalable, interoperable solution. China Telecom could also accelerate time-to-market its IMS services. The telecom company will also have the benefit to save operation costs by replacing legacy soft switches with the interoperable, flexible and highly scalable Net-Net Session Director.

Acme Packet's Net-Net Session Director session complies with Compliance with VoIP regulations. The SBCs also protects against malicious denial of service attacks and non-malicious overloads.

ATEME Partners with STI Telecom Provide HD-SAT for TV Record

ATEME has partnered with STI Telecom to provide a turnkey high-definition distribution platform for TV Record. STI Telecom’s satellite uplink system now includes ATEME Kyrion encoders and decoders, the company announced.

Targeting a wide variety of DTV applications – all using ATEME technology for improved picture quality – Kyrion is the world’s first MPEG-4/AVC solution. Kyrion consists of a live video stream encoder, an offline file encoder and transcoder.

All these apply MPEG-4/AVC encoding to facilitate HD video to occupy far less bandwidth than comparable MPEG-2 encoding. A Kyrion-encoded HD program transmitted at 6 Mbps, for example, offers the same level of A/V quality as an MPEG-2 HD program transmitted at 19 Mbps, according to a press release.

"This is the first commercial deployment of HD-SAT for TV Record, and it is really exciting for us to participate in bringing pristine high definition quality content free to air to rural communities,” said Raul E. Rivera, Director of Sales for Latin America at ATEME. “Undertaking such project would not have been possible without the expertise and support of our partner STI Telecom, a true extension of our engineering team.”

Kyrion allows customers to provide more HD channels to their subscribers without costly network infrastructure upgrades. The Kyrion live encoders offer a considerably wider operating scale – from 0.5 to 25 Mbps – facilitating content aggregators, broadcasters, service operators and telcos to reach their audience with superb picture quality on any viewing device from mobile to Ultra HD.

TMC’s (News - Alert) Narayan Bhat recently reported that Digicable, India’s second biggest cable operator, selected TITAN, ATEME’s transcoding platform, as the pay TV operator increases its drive to get a larger share of the Indian market. The news comes amid growing rumors that Digicable may merge with Den Networks, who has a 50-50 joint venture with Star DEN, News Corp (News - Alert).'s Star TV Group formed in 2008.

CallFire recently announced it is assisting Southern Wesleyan University to alert students of weather warnings. The Midwestern university is prone to natural disasters like snowstorms, tornadoes, forest fires and hurricanes, so text messaging software tools like CallFire can help them weather the weather.

Telecom Platform Deployment: China Central Television Taps Nevion for NEBS-Compliant Solution

Telcos and broadcasters preparing to implement next-generation communications solutions should look for advanced telecom platform deployment solutions that offer support for best-in-class platforms such as ATCA and NEBS. Recently, Nevion (News - Alert), a provider of managed video services for broadcasters, service providers and government organizations worldwide, revealed that China Central Television (CCTV), the largest national broadcaster in the country, will be utilizing Nevion’s offerings to deploy a complete fiber optic video transport solution.

The fiber optic video transport solution, which is based on Nevion’s Ventura product family, will be implemented at CCTV’s new Television Cultural Center (TVCC) building in the center of Beijing. Ventura was preferred over other video transport solutions due to its distinguishing design philosophy and product quality.

The Ventura product line consists of hundreds of Ventura VS251-RC-SFP fiber optic transmitter/receiver/ transceiver cards and Ventura VS103 4RU chassis. The VS251-RC-SFP is a multi-function optical interface card that supports bit rates from 10Mbps to 1.5Gbps.

The advantage of the VS251-RC-SFP is that it can be operated as a fiber transmitter, receiver, repeater or monitor for HD-SDI, SD-SDI, DVB-ASI and SMPTE-310 video. Ventura products feature NEBS Level 3 certification for operation in harsh environments. They also strictly adhere to ISO, SMPTE and DVB-ASI video standards for signal performance and integrity.

“This is a very significant deal for Nevion not least because CCTV is one of the largest national broadcasters in the world. It demonstrates the faith that the world’s national broadcasters continue to have in the quality and reliability of our solutions as well as our optical video transport expertise,” said Hans Hasselbach, senior vice president of Asia Pacific sales at Nevion, in a statement.
