Cisco Named Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant

- Alert) is known for providing a suite of unified communications solutions for a wide range of mobile devices. With the variety of devices being used by employees everywhere, multi-vendor UC client support is essential, but Cisco has provided it well.  It’s also listed as number one in regards to “Ability to Execute,” based on quality, maturity, and breadth of its applications, as well as its ability to deliver solutions.

However, Gartner also recognizes the growing role of cloud services, as mentioned in its study “Predicts 2012: Successful UC Deployments Depend on Defining Organizational Objectives and Understanding the Challenges.” In the next four years, many more organizations will use a hosted subscription model for their UC services, and Cisco is already on board for that. Customers can deploy Cisco’s UC solution from virtual desktop integration options, or with a fully or partially hosted model through a subscription-based offering.

“Enterprises wish to avoid ‘closed gardens’ and weak support for standards to ensure choice and control,” say Bern Elliot and Steve Blood of Gartner. “Support for standards is a critical consideration, as enterprises wish to integrate their UC deployments with business partners, customers, business applications and third-party products.” In these regards, Cisco has certainly met Gartner’s standards, with standards supported deployments that work with a variety of devices.

As the Gartner reports are based on customer success as much as the company’s numbers and technology, this stands as a very nice achievement for Cisco. The company continues to innovate and excel in the market, so this recognition is well deserved, and will not likely be its last.

Cisco Reports Numbers That Generally Please Investors, Analysts

"That's probably going to get tougher before it gets better and that might last for a good little while," Chambers said during a conference call.

Sales are also reportedly weaker in India and for overall government purchases.

But sales orders in North and South Americas increased 4 percent during the recent quarter and sales in Asia increased 12 percent, according to news reports.

Chambers is still cautious about the next year, given conditions facing many businesses.

"Many of our customers continue to anticipate a challenging next 12 months on a global basis and therefore these CEOs will remain conservative both in their IT expenditures but also in their hiring," Chambers said.

Bloomberg points out that new business leads to some 80 percent of Cisco’s quarterly sales.

Cisco also predicted sales and profits which are “in line with estimates,” Bloomberg said. Cisco, for instance, predicted it will see between 45 cents to 47 cents a share in profits during the current quarter. Analysts have projected 46 cents a share, Bloomberg said.

Also, sales are predicted to increase between 4 and 6 percent compared to the same quarter last year. That works out to between $11.6 billion and $11.9 billion for the current quarter. Bloomberg said analysts have predicted $11.7 billion in sales for the current quarter.

Meanwhile, the dividend hike got praise from several analysts. "It's a significant increase and now they've got a real yield," BGC analyst Colin Gillis told Reuters News Service.

Last month, Cisco acquired NDS (News - Alert) Group.
