MacTech, Southern Stars Using Social Media to Launch SkyCube Satellite Into Space

We all know that social media is a powerful force, but can it be used to launch a satellite into orbit? That's what MacTech magazine and Southern Stars are hoping as they seek donations to launch SkyCube into space next year.

MacTech and Southern Stars have jointly announced an ambitious project for "the world's first personal, interactive satellite mission" on Friday. Their goal is to use Kickstarter funding to get a satellite named SkyCube into space next year as part of a secondary payload on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

"We want to create a space exploration experience that everyone can be a part of," explains Tim DeBenedictis, founder of Southern Stars, a leading provider of mobile apps for amateur astronomers. "We are developing a nano-satellite, and mobile apps to go with it, as the focus for a global education and public outreach campaign."

The tiny SkyCube will allow people all over the world to participate in next year's launch by tweeting messages and even obtaining pictures of Earth from space. The satellite will also broadcast simple messages uploaded by sponsors including MacTech, who is the first corporate backer of the project.

"What attracted MacTech to support SkyCube was the prospect that anyone could be involved," said Neil Ticktin, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech magazine. "MacTech has always been about bringing the community together, and SkyCube demonstrates the best of this. At MacTech Conference (October 17-19, 2012 in Los Angeles), we'll be doing some fun stuff around this project and giving the Apple technical community a great opportunity to be a part of history."

The SkyCube mobile app will be available for iOS via the App Store, with an Android version also available on Google Play; amateur astronomers can also tune in from any web browser. A basic sponsorship to participate in the mission is only $1, which allows the sponsor to tweet a single message into space.

For more information, visit the Kickstarter page to check out the variety of packages Southern Stars and MacTech have lined up for the event.

AppleCare Employees Receiving OS X Mountain Lion Ahead of Launch

It's now the last full week of July, and that can only mean one thing: OS X Mountain Lion should be coming down the hill soon! For lucky AppleCare employees, it already is, in the form of a redemption code used to redeem in the Mac App Store.

9to5Mac is reporting that employees in Apple's AppleCare Operations division are now receiving OS X Mountain Lion, the company's latest operating system due for release any day now.

The website even has a screenshot as proof, which shows how the process works for AppleCare representatives.

"In coordination with AppleCare Operations, this email is provided to AHAs in advance of Mountain Lion's official release," the OS X Mountain Lion for AppleCare screenshot reads. "Copy the code below into the 'redeem' section of the Mac App Store on the Mac you wish to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Your download will begin immediately."

9to5Mac has confirmed that the build installed is 12A269, which matches the last developer preview pushed out on July 9.

The website also mentions that they've heard whispers of a July 24 overnight at Apple retail stores, during which time employees will be installing OS X Mountain Lion on display Macs and hanging signage related to the release.

It's widely believed that Apple executives will announce the Wednesday, July 25 release of OS X Mountain Lion during their fiscal Q3 2012 earnings conference call on Tuesday afternoon, in keeping with last year's rollout of OS X Lion.

Chinese Blog Claims New iPad Could Launch in China on July 27

Apple has finally put the Proview trademark lawsuit behind it, which means the company can start to focus on releasing the new iPad in China at long last. According to one blog in that country, Cupertino may be planning to do just that on July 27.

The Next Web is reporting that Apple may have already pinned a date on the calendar for the debut of its third-generation iPad in China, and it's looking like July 27, 2012.

Apple received regulatory approval for the new iPad back in March for the Wi-Fi only model and in May for the Wi-Fi

Launch Center Pro Makes Your iPhone Shortcut Dream a Reality

Still longing for speed dial on your iPhone after all these years? Although Launch Center Pro can do far more than that for power users, the app is also the best way to initiate contact with loved ones with ninja-like precision.

App Cubby has released Launch Center Pro on Thursday, a significant leap forward over the developer's Launch Center app. While users will have to pay all over again for this entirely new app, the good news is that it's 40 percent off for a limited time.

"It’s like speed dial, but for more than just phone calls!" the app description teases. "Launch Center Pro creates lightning quick shortcuts to specific features burried deep within apps. Call a loved one, message a friend, launch Instagram’s camera to quickly snap a pic, tweet, or turn your iPhone into a flashlight. Launch Center Pro gets you to where you’re going faster than ever before!"

Among the sample shortcuts Launch Center Pro offers are buttons for calling Mom, messaging a friend, emailing your boss, searching Twitter via Tweebot, creating a new item in Ominifocus, searching Yelp for nearby coffee shops, instantly firing up Instagram's camera, jumping straight into your favorite website and a whole lot more.

Best of all, Launch Center Pro launched on Thursday (see what we did there?) at the discounted price of only $2.99, a 40 percent price cut for a limited time only.

Launch Center Pro is available now from the App Store; the app is compatible with all devices running iOS 5.0 or later.

Nokia Lumia 900 Launch Finds a Wasteland of Stores Closed for Easter

It’s always an entertaining thing to watch a new device launch, especially one the carrier themselves claim will top anything they’ve done before -- including the iPhone. So why in the world did AT&T choose to launch their new flagship Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 900, on a date when most of their stores were closed?

The New York Times is reporting that the new Nokia Lumia 900 launched as scheduled on Easter Sunday, April 8 -- but the debut became something of an Easter egg hunt itself, given that almost all of AT&T’s retail stores were closed, as were Microsoft and Best Buy outlets. Ma Bell started accepting preorders for the new Windows Phone handset more than a week ago, and those orders were delivered last Friday, April 6.

Subway Hires NEXCON and Real Digital Media to Launch In-store Media Campaign

By Ray Deck, TMCnet Contributing Writer

The world’s largest restaurant chain is breaking into the digital content market by launching an in-store TV and radio station. Subway will be playing hand-selected and independently created content in all of its more than 36,000 restaurants in over 99 countries worldwide.

The appetite-building content will play on NEXCOM’s fanless NDiS 161 media player and Real Digital Media’s NEOCAST digital signage platform. The two combine to make a powerful communication medium for Subway franchisees to better inform customers of menu options and entice additional sales.

The contract between Subway, NEXCOM and Real Digital Media represents one of the largest in the industry. Immediately the two hardware manufacturers are moving to execute over 1,000 installations in the United States alone as they strategize expansion into international locations.

Subway had the unique requirement of needing to support both national messaging efforts and empower local markets and franchisees to select the content that best fit the needs of their specific restaurants with marketing messages changing throughout the day to accommodate breakfast, lunch and dinner menus in a unique way.

Long operating hours, a wide variety of temperature conditions and changing content across regions and throughout the day makes this one of the most complex such in-store installation ever attempted.

NEXCOM, founded in 1992, develops products that incorporate the latest technology to meet critical resolution requirements. It offers a wide range of solutions from cost-effective to high-performance, feature rich digital signage solutions.

Subway chose the company’s flagship media player that boasts superior temperature control, longevity and durability due to its fanless design. The hardware accelerated decoder generates full HD video playback with faster response time and lower power consumption than any other similar device on the market.
