Entropic Continues to Grow Networking, Satellite Business

- Alert), which is a supplier of high-speed connectivity solutions enabling emerging data center architectures

In July, Entropic acquired the direct broadcast satellite intellectual property and corresponding technologies from PLX Technology. Monk said the assets will strengthen the company’s long-term strategic position as the DBS market transitions to Sat-IP where satellite signals are converted to Internet Protocol and distributed over an IP network to any IP-enabled client device.

“We used to be known as a connectivity company. In addition to the networking, we provide direct broadcast satellite outdoor units so we provide solutions directly to the big satellite companies that allows them to bring the content from multiple satellites down a single cable,” Monk added. “We consider ourselves a settop company. That doesn’t meant we are trying to do everything in the settop world, but we are focused on the IP client side.”

Earlier this year, Entropic was named the market leader in the communications semiconductor space by The Linley Group, TMCnet reported. The company ranked number one in worldwide revenue of home networking application specific standard products, and is the market share leader in the home networking integrated circuit space, boasting 38 percent of the market.

MacTech, Southern Stars Using Social Media to Launch SkyCube Satellite Into Space

We all know that social media is a powerful force, but can it be used to launch a satellite into orbit? That's what MacTech magazine and Southern Stars are hoping as they seek donations to launch SkyCube into space next year.

MacTech and Southern Stars have jointly announced an ambitious project for "the world's first personal, interactive satellite mission" on Friday. Their goal is to use Kickstarter funding to get a satellite named SkyCube into space next year as part of a secondary payload on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

"We want to create a space exploration experience that everyone can be a part of," explains Tim DeBenedictis, founder of Southern Stars, a leading provider of mobile apps for amateur astronomers. "We are developing a nano-satellite, and mobile apps to go with it, as the focus for a global education and public outreach campaign."

The tiny SkyCube will allow people all over the world to participate in next year's launch by tweeting messages and even obtaining pictures of Earth from space. The satellite will also broadcast simple messages uploaded by sponsors including MacTech, who is the first corporate backer of the project.

"What attracted MacTech to support SkyCube was the prospect that anyone could be involved," said Neil Ticktin, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech magazine. "MacTech has always been about bringing the community together, and SkyCube demonstrates the best of this. At MacTech Conference (October 17-19, 2012 in Los Angeles), we'll be doing some fun stuff around this project and giving the Apple technical community a great opportunity to be a part of history."

The SkyCube mobile app will be available for iOS via the App Store, with an Android version also available on Google Play; amateur astronomers can also tune in from any web browser. A basic sponsorship to participate in the mission is only $1, which allows the sponsor to tweet a single message into space.

For more information, visit the Kickstarter page to check out the variety of packages Southern Stars and MacTech have lined up for the event.

iDirect Finds Satellite Communications to be a Growing Trend

By Nick Ruble, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Recent studies conducted by iDirect (News - Alert) show 60 percent of utilities to be taking advantage of satellite communications in one way or another. Through the Strategic Assessment of Satellite Usage in the Utility Industry study, came a wider understanding of exactly how satellite communication technologies are being used.

Aside from the 60 percent of utilities currently implementing some kind of satellite communications, the study also found that over 20 percent of industry leaders are planning on integrating similar technologies in the near future. Since a study of this sort hasn’t been conducted any time in the immediate past, a decent amount of misconceptions based on outdated technologies were cleared up as well.

iDirect is among the most prestigious of satellite-based IP communications providers. These surveys will benefit not only the company in a large way, but also the overall quality of like products on the market.

The studies also showed the top benefit of satellite technology to be extensive provision of coverage along with its unrivaled security. Common claims that this type of service comes with high cost and latency were found to have been based on previous experiences with legacy technology. However, surveys showed that nearly 80 percent of utilities were interested in exploring more up to date VSAT systems.

Toni Rudnicki, chief marketing officer at iDirect, stated, “With the majority of utilities already invested in some form of satellite technology, and a significant percentage planning to add satellite in the next two years, this study reveals a huge opportunity for VSAT solutions to help shape the future of the utility industry.”

Findings undoubtedly show an increase in VSAT awareness within the utility industry. That said, the distribution of reliable next-generation satellite technology is in high demand – it will likely be the next step in wireless communications for the vast majority of utilities.
