Gartner: Enterprise Software Spending to Rise 4.5 percent in 2012

- Alert)) deployments representing extensions to, or replacement of, existing applications and new solutions.”

The major application areas are business intelligence; content, communications and collaboration; customer relationship management, digital content creation, enterprise resource planning, personal productivity software, project and portfolio management and supply chain management.

Enterprise resource planning in particular is the biggest market segment, with projected revenue of $24.9 billion this year. Office suites come in second at $16.5 billion. Business intelligence is expected to reach $13 billion, while CRM packages are expected to exceed that.

Businesses are looking to shift upfront capital expenses to operational expenses. This usually means turning to the cloud, using Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) and virtualization services instead of traditional software packages. Vendors are positioning them as more cost-effective than conventional software packages and offering a simple upgrade path.

“After more than a decade of SaaS and cloud service use, adoption continues to grow and evolve within the enterprise application markets. This is occurring as tighter capital budgets demand leaner alternatives, popularity and familiarity with the model increase, and interest in SaaS and cloud computing grows,” Eid said. “Adoption varies between and within markets. Although use is expanding to a wider range of applications and solutions, the most widespread use is still characterized by horizontal applications with common processes, among distributed virtual workforce teams and within Web 2.0 initiatives.”

SaaS services are expected to grow over the next several years, from 11 percent of enterprise spending in 2010 to 16 percent in 2015. Eid said that this was due to buyers weighing their options and increasing confidence as the economy recovers.

Cue the Tissues: HTC Blames 70 Percent Net Profit Drop on iPhone 4S

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A manufacturer specializing in Android handsets unleashes a dizzying torrent of models to confuse customers, then blames a steep drop in net profit on one device sold by a rival.

Reuters is reporting that HTC’s 70 percent fall in net profit in Q1 2012 can only be blamed on one thing: Apple’s iPhone 4S. The Taiwanese handset manufacturer has failed to keep pace with both Apple and rival Android handset maker Samsung, and now the financials have come home to roost.

"A major challenge we faced last year was the big drop in sales in the U.S. because of competition from the iPhone 4S," explained CEO Peter Chou on Tuesday during a briefing with analysts.

As recently as last year, more than 50 percent of HTC’s fortunes came from the United States, where the company has offered a dizzying array of models spread across all four major carriers. A big chunk of Android’s growth spurt can be linked to the success of HTC and Korean rival Samsung, whose Galaxy device line is another thorn in the side of the Taiwan company.

"This is a difficult war; the market will be focusing more and more on HTC's profit and value,

EPA Approves 15 Percent Ethanol at the Pump

By Cheryl KaftenTMCnet Contributor
Share

On April 2, for the first time, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved E15 —gasoline mixed with 15 percent ethanol—as a registered fuel. For more than 30 years, ethanol has been blended into gasoline, but the law limited it to 10 percent by volume for use in gasoline-fueled vehicles.

The primary source of ethanol is corn, but other grains or biomass sources also have been used as feedstocks. The announcement represents the most significant development in a three-year effort by the industry to secure approval of the sale of the mid-level ethanol blend, and it follows EPA's testing of the fuel for any negative health effects in February 2012.

The partial waiver will enable fuel and fuel additive manufacturers to sell  gasoline that contains greater than 10 volume percent ethanol and no more than 15 volume percent ethanol (E15) for use in model year (MY) 2001 through 2006 light-duty motor vehicles (passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles). In October 2010, the EPA granted a partial waiver for E15 for use in MY2007 and newer light-duty motor vehicles, subject to the same conditions.
