How to Ensure Your Mac is Working Properly

The Mac is a wonderful tool for both work and entertainment, but how do you know that your Mac is performing at its optimum? Do you know if your hard drive is about to fail? Fortunately, you can take a few simple measures to find out how your Mac is performing, and ensure that the hardware is working properly. Continue reading to learn more.

Checking the Hard Drive

Hard drives, and even SSDs, are susceptible to failure. You never know when a drive will fail, but when it does, you’ll definitely feel the effects of it. You should always have a good backup of your Mac’s drive by using either Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive. Having a good backup will ensure that when your drive does fail, you’ll be back up and running in no time.

The majority of drives include a feature called S.M.A.R.T. (or Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). By checking on the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive, you will be alerted to potential upcoming drive failures.

Black iPhone 5 May Scuff Easily, Still Beats Galaxy S3 in Drop Test

by Matt Clark 2Comments

The iPhone 5, like every Cupertino-designed device, is a real eye-catcher. While adding a reliable case is an obvious choice for protecting such a high-dollar product, plenty of users will forgo physical security in the name of sleek design and a thin profile. But if you're picking up a new iPhone in black, be forewarned the aluminum back may show wear rapidly.

When Apple decided to drop the glass backing of the iPhone 4S in favor of anodized aluminum, there were immediate benefits. Chiefly, the overall weight of the iPhone 5 dropped significantly -- around 20-percent. And that's not even to mention those unsightly, spider-webbed panels thanks to one clumsy fumble.

But as with most design decisions, there are pros and cons. According to some early reports, the black iPhone 5 is extra susceptible to scratches.

A forum user at Overclockers UK (via MacRumors) decided to test out the black aluminum case, by taking a key and SIM card pin to the finish. Looking at the image -- well, it's not pretty.

How to Keep iTunes from Automatically Downloading Purchased Items

It asks for my iTunes account credentials. I’ve tried to get rid of this message, but it keeps popping up every few minutes. I’ve taken the computer to the Genius Bar, but they were unable to remove the message. What can I do to stop this annoying popup?

If you don’t already have a Mac set up to automatically download your purchases from iTunes, then iTunes will request that you set up this feature. Unfortunately, it does this in a rather annoying way. But the feature is pretty handy: it automatically downloads any purchase made on any device linked to your account. So if you buy an app, movie, music, or book on your iOS device, it’s also downloaded to your computer, no syncing necessary.

New Job: Standing in Line for the iPhone 5

Charlie Hufnagel was first in line for the iPhone 5--for someone else.

It's iPhone 5 day, and Apple Stores around the country opened its doors an hour early to greet hoards of diehard Apple devotees with a new handset. It's a fairly exciting sight to see: people line up early in the morning -- some even camp out for days -- for the chance to be one of the first to get their hands on the device. Those who were queued downtown at the San Francisco Apple Store -- where I participated in the iPhone launch -- had lined up on a whim early in the morning without a pre-order to guarantee them a unit. The person at the very front of the line, however, wasn't there for his own iPhone, but to wait in line for someone else. And he was paid to do it.

Deals: Get Your iTunes in Order with TuneUp

A well organized iTunes is a thing of absolute beauty. Album information fully filled out, artist names completely in order, no duplicates listed--it's enough to bring a single tear to your eye. Unfortunately, none of our iTunes libraries look anything like this. They're disorganized, searchable only by us because we understand the cryptology that is behind our methods. Cut down on your attempts to decipher of your code with TuneUp. It's the ultimate iTunes add-on, and it's on sale now.

TuneUp is extremely powerful iTunes management tool that will clean up, organize, and complete missing fields in your library. Through some sort of technological magic, TuneUp will correct mislabeled or incomplete song data, scour the web for proper cover art, removes duplicate songs, and pulls in extra artist information that you'd otherwise have to enter by hand. It turns your iTunes into the media library you always planned to make it--with no effort on your part.

TuneUp's usual ticket price is $50. While it's well-worth it at full cost, why pay it if you don't have to? We've slashed the price by 40%, making it a more than reasonable $30. An excellent price for an awesome app. Get it today.

The report contends that OLEDs have an advantage over liquid crystal displays (LCD) because their OLED displays are thinner, lightweight and printable. That’s all for this week, but green energy never stops. Check back next week for more!

Even more fortunately, the Tikal Networks IP-PBX and Crystal Call Center was hosted in a remote location. Tikal Networks developed a unique feature called "remote agent". This feature gives every user the ability to call from a remote location and use all the features available at their desk. This gives any user the ability to keep on working without any change in features or operations. To assure complete uninterrupted operation, IBI's IT management also took the precaution to host the telephony system off the premises. This way, no single event can prevent the operation from regular operation.

Lastly, LogMeIn’s latest product feature BoldChat Web chat and multichannel, online customer engagement offering, now features Twitter (News - Alert) integration and social media management.  Twitter Management is a part of the standard BoldChat Enterprise edition, available as a free update to BoldChat Enterprise customers.

With this solution in place, customer service agents can manage their Twitter interactions with ease and improve efficiency. When combined with BoldChat’s other capabilities, including Web chat, e-mail, and click-to-call, it becomes a unified tool for customer conversations. Customer service teams can automatically turn related tweets into a conversation for improved context and responses, while assigning incoming tweets to agents based on availability, skill, and department.

"Twitter is quickly becoming a go-to channel for customer engagement, but to date, managing these customer conversations has meant trying to turn a social media marketing tool into a customer service tool,” Steve Castro-Miller (News - Alert), VP of Chat Products at LogMeIn, Inc. concluded. “In contrast, BoldChat Twitter management is designed from the ground up for engaging and managing customer conversations. We believe that the right approach is not just adding one more social tool to the mix, but rather giving sales, marketing and customer service teams a single, unified tool for managing all customer interactions, regardless of channel."

That number pushes the iPhone 4S pre-orders out of the top slot by nearly double. Apple also mentioned that some customers will be left behind as demand for the device is exceeding the supply.

Wild Blood Review

by Nathan Meunier 0Comments

Warping classic Arthurian legend into a more twisted tale of demons and deception proves a silly but sufficient foundation for high-gloss hack-and-slash adventure in Wild Blood. Gameloft's latest Unreal Engine 3 powered beauty pits you as a burly Sir Lancelot, who must carve his way through unholy hordes to stop a crazed King Arthur that has unleashed hell upon his kingdom in a fit of jealous rage. While this slick slaughter fest is heavy on the eye candy, it doesn't measure up quite as well in the slice-and-dice department.

This formulaic spin through a gorgeous looking realm is brimming with pit-stops full of nasty summoned beasties to cut through before you can proceed to the next area. Three distinct weapon types -- a huge sword, twin axes, and a bow -- bolstered by magic attacks and unique combos offer some sound choices for demon-stomping. Wild Blood's straightforward combat often devolves into frantic button mashing, but battles are satisfying when you're violently thrashing through a throng of face-gnawing baddies, leaving a trail of bodies in your wake. A great range of unique foe types and levels capped by grandiose boss encounters help keep the epic scope of the adventure intact. Some distractions along the way -- like clunky turret sequences -- are tedious trip-ups, while puzzle chests deliver more enjoyable breaks in the action.

Innovation in Business

- Alert) is now solely focused on services – its iconic ThinkPad is now made by Lenovo. When we think of the Internet, we think of Google, which has achieved its position by developing an unbeatable core proposition and not being afraid to experiment with related services.

This is where the trick to successful innovation lies. It is about understanding what makes your company successful in the first place, and maintaining that as a core focus. However, that must be accompanied by a company-wide understanding that just because a service or product is a core focus, it is not set in stone. If circumstances change, then the business should change with them. If there are alternatives or improvements they can be discussed, modelled and tested. A core product offering also means there are ways to add new complementary services. As a provider of e-commerce services, I am always looking for new ways to facilitate B2C and C2C payments, for example, or ways to help online retail customers expand their service into new territories.

Windows Tablets to Overtake Android, Thanks to Microsoft Office 365

- Alert) and Android devices’ market shares,” Chiou said in a recent article.

Chiou issued his forecasts for Microsoft tablets with Office 365, Android and iPad tablets in a Witsview report titled, “2010-2015 Market Shares of Tablet PC Operating Systems.” WitsView is a subsidiary of the Taiwan-based Trendforce. The predictions come from tracking shipments of PCs and LCD panels.

While Office 365 might give Windows 8-based tablets a competitive edge over Android tablets, it’s not expected to dent Apple’s position as the leader in the tablet segment. The iPad currently accounts for 62 percent of the tablet market share. And by 2015, Chiou expects that number to drop to 59 percent, while it will still remain the most popular tablet by far.

The Android tablet market share, however, will drop from 32 percent to 21 percent, while Windows-based tablets rise to 19 percent.

Deals: Get Your App Noticed with Iconnice

Apps may be solely for mobile devices, but you have to make sure your product has a worthy home on the web. Apps need to have proper representation wherever they may have a presence. Instead of hiring a public relations agent to manage your app's image, just grab the Iconnice bundle. It comes with fifteen templates that fit your app perfectly, along with vector icons and promotion templates. It can all be yours for $24 in our latest deal.

Apps are becoming one of the most popular ways to deliver a service or content. Apple's iPhone 5 announcement carried plenty of important information, but perhaps the most interesting was that there are 700,000 iOS apps in the App Store. As such, having an impressive presence is top priority for any app creator. Iconnice has some great templates that will give potential users the information that they need in a visually pleasing medium. All of the templates and vectors in the Iconnice bundle contain Photoshop, HTML, CSS, and JS files. That means they're yours for the manipulating.

The Iconnice bundle would normally cost $48. Cut that price in half and that's what you'll pay in our latest deal. For only $24, your app can have as happy a home online as it will on an iOS device.

IBI - Multi-National Insurance & financial
trading company
Israel Brokerage & Investments (IBI), Ltd. A leading company listed in The Israeli Stock Exchange Market offers a broad range of investment management and trading. One of the biggest fears a company can experience is complete operation shut down during disaster. Last year, IBI Investments, experienced this exact situation when a floor of their building (below them) caught on fire. Fortunately all the workers were able to exit safely.

Additionally, the app includes workflow capabilities and reviews for incidents, security and operations.

Finally, a judge ruled this week that capturing data from a public, unencrypted Wi-Fi hotspot is legal. The ruling comes as part of a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Innovatio.

The company has gone after businesses using its patented packet sniffing technology, which has a number of legitimate uses including network analysis, security breach detection and usage monitoring. However, the collateral damage from the ruling means that gathering information over an unencrypted Wi-Fi hotspot, even if used for nefarious purposes, is still legal.

"What's on TV tonight?" isn't quite as easy of a question as it used to be. With so many ways to watch our favorite shows and movies, just about anything can be on whenever (and wherever) we want -- it's just a matter of narrowing down the options.

Filtering through it all just got a whole lot easier with NextGuide, a dramatic reimagining of the classic TV guide. Instead of an unwieldy list of unwatchable channels, you get vivid programming squares that span many common sources of entertainment, like cable TV,  iTunes, Netflix, and even Hulu Plus.

New Kindle Fire, 7-Inch Fire HD Now Shipping from Amazon

The iPhone 5 isn't the only gadget ready to face anxious consumers this morning, as Amazon's new seven-inch Kindle Fire HD is in stock and ready to ship along with the refreshed Kindle Fire and the basic $69 model.

The Verge is reporting that Amazon is now shipping the 16GB model of its new seven-inch Kindle Fire HD for $199. The tablet currently shows as in stock and ready to ship, while the 32GB model for $249 is delayed until October 25.

Along with the latest HD model, the refreshed original Kindle Fire with twice the RAM, longer battery life and a faster processor is also shipping today at the newly-discounted price of only $159.

Last but not least, the basic Kindle is ready to ship for a mere $69, but if you don't fancy having to view ads, you can pony up another $20 to get the ad-free version, which is still a nice discount from its original $109 price.

If you missed out on getting an iPhone 5 preorder in before the shipping dates slipped to two weeks, maybe you can console yourself with a new Kindle -- and Amazon Prime members can have it as early as Saturday if they want to pay the extra $3.99 for one-day delivery.

Lightning to USB Cable Sells Out, Apple Confirms No Freebies with iPhone 5

What sells out even faster than the new iPhone 5? Apparently, the new Lightning dock connector adapters, which are now showing a two-to-three week shipping delay as Apple confirms that new handset owners won't be getting a freebie.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple's new Lightning to USB Cable, which sells for $19, has sold out within a half an hour of the iPhone 5 preorders lighting up on the company's online store.

While the $29 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter and the $39 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) won't ship until next month, the cheaper Lightning to USB Cable has been mostly available since Wednesday's big announcement, but no more.

Meanwhile, The Next Web published a report earlier this morning claiming that Apple was including a free Lightning to 30-pin Adapter with each iPhone 5. Apple's online store even offered the option to buy an "additional" Lightning to 30-pin Adapter, but this appears to be in error.

"Following the publishing on this article, TNW reader Ryan Moores reached out to share clarification he received from one of Apple’s online sales representatives," the updated report reads. "According to the representative, it is 'an error' and it is 'being investigated at the moment.'"

Bummer, but at least we'll still get those swanky new EarPods as part of the package, right? Right?

Hands on with the iPod touch and iPod nano

The iPhone 5 was certainly the big star of Apple's September 12 event (sorry, Dave Grohl...), but the recently neglected iPod touch got a major makeover as well, and the iPod nano got its video-playing mojo back.

The 4th-gen iPod touch was introduced in September 2010, more than 2 years ago, with the iPhone 4's A4 processor and Retina display. But when the iPhone 4S came along, the iPod touch languished without an upgrade. Now the new fifth-gen iPod touch brings the feature set back in line with the iPhone. Both have the 4-inch, 1136x640 screen. Both got dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz). Both got the super-cool panorama feature for the rear camera, plus a better front camera with 1.2-megapixel stills and 720p video, and both have the new Lightning connector.

The iPod touch still lags in a few specs (its rear camera is 5 megapixels, while iPhone 5's is 8, and the iPod touch gets the A5 chip while the iPhone 5 boasts an A6). But in a few ways we like it better than iPhone 5. It's incredibly thin and light, down to just 3.10 ounces and 0.24 inch thick

720p FaceTime Will Require a Hefty Data Plan

Of all the subtle yet significant enhancements in iPhone 5, perhaps the sneakiness is FaceTime. Not only do we get a 720p camera for the first time on an iPhone, we also get the ability to make FaceTime calls wherever we are, thanks to iOS 6's untethering from Wi-Fi.

But with unlimited data plans quickly going the way of the Cube, this one-two punch of an upgrade is a bit of a double-edged sword. AT&T has already put limitations on it; the once-exclusive carrier is only letting users under its Mobile Share umbrella to use FaceTime over Cellular--thereby shutting out grandfathered unlimited users. Verizon doesn't seem to have a problem, but then again,  it dropped its unlimited plans months ago; Sprint's cool with it even for unlimited customers, but there isn't much it won't do to get your business.

So why all the limitations? Because streaming live 720p video over 4G is going to eat up quite a bit of data. According to Verizon's handy data calculator, streaming 5 hours of 4G video per month (not taking quality into consideration) will consume more than 1.7 GB of your plan, at a rate of about 350 MB per hour (using the 3G iPhone 4S, that number drops to about 250 MB). But since FaceTime is sending and receiving video--and we're talking HD--those estimates might actually be a bit conservative.

What's unclear is whether Apple has taken steps to save us from ourselves. While FaceTime over Wi-Fi will use every bit of the camera's resolution, we're not sure if Apple will limit the picture quality when using a cellular network. But we haven't heard any grumblings about that, and based on the carriers' response, it appears as though it won't. Obviously signal strength is a mitigating factor, but iPhone 5 users shouldn't experience much lag over 4G; over 3G, iPhone 4S users might struggle some, even with its VGA camera.

We might not like it, but there's a reason AT&T and Verizon are scrambling to make sure you're paying for FaceTime over Cellular. But it's not the strength of their networks they're worried about--it's their bottom line.

Free App Friday: UpTo

I've always been an iCal power user, though I have rued the amount of effort it takes to try to add links to properly curated calendars for things like sports events of television shows. I'd love to be able to just subscribe to a feed that tells me when the Giants are playing a home game, or when New Girl premieres on Fox, without having to add every event manually.

Well, UpTo helps with this. It's a free iPhone app that displays a social stream of events, whether it's your friends' or your favorite baseball team. It collects event data from Facebook, or your friends who have opted in to the UpTo service, as well as your Google and Outlook calendars. You can also choose from a wide variety of "event streams", which are calendars for things like sports, television, movies, and technology. It also lets you manually add events, in case you decide to make the app your primary event calendar. If you've usually got a pretty packed schedule, or like to be in the know about the latest happenings around you, you'll probably want to check out this app for your own sake.

Download UpTo for iPhone.

AudioCodes 300HD and 400HD IP Phones Begin Microsoft Lync Compatibility Testing

- Alert) testing and qualification process ensures that third-party products are interoperable with its Lync 2012 unified communications platform.

"We're pleased to welcome AudioCodes and their 300HD and 400HD IP phones to our phone interoperability program," said Jyoti Black, senior director of Microsoft. "Once AudioCodes IP phones are qualified, partners can benefit from simplifying purchase, training, and support by procuring phones, gateways, SBAs and E-SBCs from a single vendor."

Aimed at the enterprise market, both the 300HD and 400HD series of high definition IP phones feature enhanced call quality and clarity. Once they receive Lync qualification, AudioCodes plans to release a free firmware upgrade for existing 300HD and 400HD series phones, making them immediately capable of direct integration with Lync 2010.

"We see the qualification of AudioCodes 300HD and 400HD IP Phones with Microsoft Lync as highly valuable to our partner community," said Lior Aldema, chief operating officer at AudioCodes. "Sourcing gateways, E-SBCs, IP Phones and professional services from the same vendor simplifies the purchasing, deployment and support processes, effectively reducing costs for our partners."

AudioCodes is a Microsoft Gold Unified Communication Partner and a Certified Device Partner for Unified Communications (News - Alert). As such, the company will be among a select group of Microsoft partners to be part of the Microsoft Lync Solutions Pavilion at ITEXPO (News - Alert) in Austin, Texas, from October 2-5.

All companies in the pavilion will demonstrate their Lync products and solutions.

AudioCodes is not just a Lync partner, however. For example, in August, the company's Mediant 4000 enterprise session border controller received Gensys certification.

AudioCodes is a Platinum sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO is the world’s premier IP communications event. Visit AudioCodes in booth #808. For more information on ITEXPO West 2012 click here.

The first fiberhood to be connected will be Hanover Heights in Kansas City, Kan., which pre-registered the highest percentage of households. It will be turned up “in a few weeks,” Google said.

On the Missouri side, the first fiberhood to get service will be Crown Center, which pre-registered a “whopping number of apartment buildings and condos,” said Google. The company is still trenching fiber in Missouri, so installations in Missouri fiberhoods will start next spring.

Instant Survey Says Britons Want an iPhone 5

If you are Samsung (News - Alert), you can take some solace in your brand loyalty in the UK. If you are not, then the numbers are not pretty. As noted these results are less than a scientific sample, and because this is what is known as “quick fire research” it is anecdotal at best since such exercises are limited to 1,000 participants.

So who is Usurv?

As a result of my investigation of the survey, I found Usurv to be more interesting than the results of this latest poll.  There is no reason to make this complicated and that is the beauty. Here is what they do:

Phil Schiller Announces the iPhone 5, Preorders Begin Friday, In Stores Sept. 21

Following a rousing introduction by CEO Tim Cook, senior marketing VP Phil Schiller takes the stage at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco to announce the iPhone 5, which pretty much matches to a tee what has been leaked and rumored in recent weeks.

Wasting no time in a likely packed media event, Apple senior VP or market Phil Schiller has introduced the iPhone 5, which claims to be 18 percent thinner than the current iPhone 4S at only 7.6mm and 20 percent lighter than its predecessor.

As rumored, the iPhone 5 includes a new four-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio at 1136 x 640 resolution and a 326ppi Retina Display. "This is the monumental challenge we had," Schiller notes. "Can you make a phone with more features that is smaller and lighter? Anyone can make a bigger phone."

Schiller claims the iPhone 5 is designed for a user's hand, but the larger display will allow for a fifth row of icons to be displayed. All of Apple's built-in apps have already been updated for the taller display, while third-party apps yet to be updated will simply run as before with black bars taking up the extra space.

The iPhone 5 screen also includes 44 percent more color saturation and integrated touchscreen. "This is the most accurate display in the industry," Schiller boasts. "The touch sensors are integrated right into the display itself. We removed a layer and made it sharper. This is the world's most advanced display, and I couldn't be prouder of it."

Also as rumored, the iPhone 5 brings "ultrafast wireless" in the form of HSPA
