IBM Products Found to Directly Infringe Claims of Overland Storage Partitioning Patent

- Alert) TL2000 and TL4000 tape libraries, which are manufactured by BDT, "directly infringe" all '766 claims asserted by Overland Storage.

According to the Initial Determination, there are various important discoveries about Overland Storage's U.S. Patent No. 6,328,766. This is related to partitioning media elements as it relates to automated data storage and retrieval systems methods. This will allow two computers to store and retrieve data without interfering with one another, the company stated in a press release.

“Innovation is the driving force of technology companies, and the ability to create and protect their intellectual property is critical to companies as they develop new products and protect existing assets. After twenty-one months of investigation, it is satisfying to have the ITC rule that infringement has occurred," said Mr. Eric Kelly, president and CEO of Overland Storage. "These patented technologies are central to protecting data deployed in enterprises around the world.”

Recently, the company announced its new family of SnapSAN solutions for high performance computing. With 99.999 percent availability and setting a new benchmark for enterprise level automation and performance capabilities, The SnapSAN 3000 and SnapSAN 5000 are scalable to 288TBs and are completely redundant systems. The new SnapSAN provides multidimensional tiers that maintain optimal performance and provisioning without IT intervention, with an easy-to-use interface for performing transparent, non-disruptive data movement.

Big Data Drives Maturing Cloud Storage Market

Best Practices: Backing Up and Securing Data

Your cloud storage plan needs to be comprehensive. Don’t just back up your servers, back up your laptops and desktops. You never know what will be damaged. Back up at least once at day, preferably more. Make sure you have a least one copy

Automation is imperative. Manual intervention experience has proven back up is not reliable. Your storage system needs to be fully automated and monitored.

Time sensitivity: Remember how important your data is and determinehow much does that data change. Data always needs to be protected. Is it an hour old? 24 hours old? That’s going to determine how often it needs to be backed up.

Disaster recovery. How fast do you need that data back? A lot of people have a solid idea of how much they data they have but there is a time factor is associated. Most people don’t grasp it and they just come up with an arbitrary number.

Data security: What is the data actually comprised of? Companies know how much data they have, they know the business uses that information, but many CIOs can’tdetermine how the business uses the data it is storing. There is a big difference between documents the marketing team has to store (pictures and icons), versus HR and payroll and information where encryption is required. Type and context your data so you can apply the proper protection to prevent data theft.

Make sure the data is in a single unified capability. Multiple copies of data in multiple places – paying for it to be stored multiple times with no benefit of it having it in so many places just drives up the cost of storing it. There needs to be a value to it. Understand the difference between highly available data versus multiple copies of data that doesn’t change a lot that are accessible by one source.

Work with the right vendor. Partner with a service provider who can help you navigate the different storage options. Today, there is not a great deal of standardization and portability across providers. Ensure that your applications are portable. A good partner can help you achieve that.

Rennert Vogel Deploys DataCore's SANsymphony -V Storage Hypervisor

By Rahul Arora TMCnet Contributor

DataCore Software, a storage hypervisor and premier provider of storage virtualization software, recently announced its SANsymphony -V storage hypervisor has been deployed by Rennert Vogel Mandler & Rodriguez, P.A. (Rennert Vogel),  a Miami-based business law firm.

The solution has helped the company achieve high availability in its virtual environment, according to officials from Rennert Vogel in a press release. This next-generation storage virtualization software solution has also enabled the company to eliminate storage-related barriers preventing them from realizing the financial and operational goals of their virtualization projects.

“We often come into contact with people from larger law firms that have the cutting-edge systems and they are envious of our virtual infrastructure,” said Mike Ferguson, IT director for Rennert Vogel. “They learn about our HA, the centralized management, performance - even across Layer 2 transport – and are amazed at the benefits the SANsymphony-V storage hypervisor offers.”

SANsymphony -V storage hypervisor helps cost-effectively avoid the many performance problems caused by I/O bottlenecks, and the lost business suffered from downtime that make customers very hesitant to virtualize crucial business applications such as mail and databases systems.

SANsymphony-V uses adaptive caching and performance boosting techniques perfected over the past 10 years to absorb varying workloads while simultaneously removing storage as a single point of failure and disruption. The solution offers a flexible, open software platform from which to provision, share, reconfigure, migrate, replicate, expand and upgrade storage with no lag.

“The gains we have achieved by deploying DataCore technology to virtualize storage resources include increased reliability, performance and peace-of-mind for all of us,” added Ferguson. “We benefit from centralized management, from being able to consolidate servers, less refresh of hardware and more.”
