Nano-SIM Anticipation: Euro Carriers Stocking in Advance for iPhone Release

- Alert) arrival, some are not so sure this is such a good move, as Apple has not officially stated what we can expect to see from them regarding the newest iPhone.

“The nano-SIM design was approved by the mobile phone industry’s standards group earlier this year and should allow Apple to save even more space in its tightly designed iPhone interior,” Aimonetti writes.

The Financial Times even cited two sources who claim that these telecom companies are holding millions of chips in warehouses in anticipation of the high demand the iPhone 5 will create upon being released.

The article goes on to explain that these carriers may be jumping the gun in preparation due to a lack thereof when Apple switched to micro-SIM cards with its iPhone 4 release, as well as its first-generation iPad. Many carriers found that they didn’t have enough micro-SIMs to meet the high demand; needless to say, this is not an event in history they want repeated.

As the nano-SIM is 40 percent smaller than the current micro-SIMs found in most smartphones, it seems many other phone makers will likely adopt Apple’s new design. Only time will tell, however, if the new nano-SIM will give Apple the competitive edge it needs.

Cable Companies Top List of 'Least Liked' U.S. Firms

- Alert) ranked 14th on the list.

None of those scores is especially unusual. Cable TV companies traditionally score rather lower than the national average for all industries. Fixed network telcos also tend to face obstacles in the rankings. But mobile service providers score no better than fixed network service providers.

Service industries typically score worse than manufacturing because of limited competition and the difficulty of interacting with customers.  Most common complaints include billing issues and customer representatives not being knowledgeable or helpful enough.

It’s probably worth noting, though, that although consumer satisfaction tends to be below average for all the recurring service providers, none of that stops people from purchasing the services at a very high level.

It also wouldn’t appear especially easy for any single provider to consistently provide customer service satisfaction that is markedly different from the other contestants in a single industry, with perhaps one important distinction. Since scores are measurably higher for “other providers,” it might be argued that smaller providers seem to have an advantage over larger providers.

Report: Apple Buys Fingerprint Sensor Firm AuthenTec for $356 Million

Apple acquiring most any company would certainly be worthy of headlines, but a new report claims Cupertino is snatching up the creator of "award-winning smart fingerprint sensors" which could point to the company's future plans for digital payments.

Reuters filed the briefest of reports on Friday morning on Apple's plans to purchase AutenTec Inc. for "about $356 million." That amounts to an $8 per-share offer of the company, and "a premium of 58 percent over AuthenTec's Thursday close of $5.07."

Described as a company who "makes fingerprint sensor chips used in personal computers," AuthenTec's own fact sheet describes them as "a leading provider of mobile and network security."

"AuthenTec encryption technology, fingerprint sensors and identity management software are deployed by the leading mobile device, networking and computing companies, content and service providers, and governments worldwide," the fact sheet reveals.

Exactly what Apple's intentions might be with AuthenTec are unclear and neither company is saying, but it's not hard to imagine that Cupertino could incorporate the security firm's fingerprint technology into something like iOS 6's Passbook app or even the mobile OS as a whole to make the iPhone more secure than simply password or four-digit codes.

"AuthenTec's award-winning smart fingerprint sensors provide multiple touch-powered features that extend beyond user authentication to include convenience, personalization and touch control," the fact sheet concludes. "The Company's TouchChip area fingerprint sensors and modules comply with government and industry standards and offer the ruggedness, strong security and ease of integration needed for quick and broad deployment."

Ironically, AuthenTec's "top tier customers" include Apple smartphone rivals LG, Motorola Mobility, Nokia and Samsung.

MacTech, Southern Stars Using Social Media to Launch SkyCube Satellite Into Space

We all know that social media is a powerful force, but can it be used to launch a satellite into orbit? That's what MacTech magazine and Southern Stars are hoping as they seek donations to launch SkyCube into space next year.

MacTech and Southern Stars have jointly announced an ambitious project for "the world's first personal, interactive satellite mission" on Friday. Their goal is to use Kickstarter funding to get a satellite named SkyCube into space next year as part of a secondary payload on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

"We want to create a space exploration experience that everyone can be a part of," explains Tim DeBenedictis, founder of Southern Stars, a leading provider of mobile apps for amateur astronomers. "We are developing a nano-satellite, and mobile apps to go with it, as the focus for a global education and public outreach campaign."

The tiny SkyCube will allow people all over the world to participate in next year's launch by tweeting messages and even obtaining pictures of Earth from space. The satellite will also broadcast simple messages uploaded by sponsors including MacTech, who is the first corporate backer of the project.

"What attracted MacTech to support SkyCube was the prospect that anyone could be involved," said Neil Ticktin, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech magazine. "MacTech has always been about bringing the community together, and SkyCube demonstrates the best of this. At MacTech Conference (October 17-19, 2012 in Los Angeles), we'll be doing some fun stuff around this project and giving the Apple technical community a great opportunity to be a part of history."

The SkyCube mobile app will be available for iOS via the App Store, with an Android version also available on Google Play; amateur astronomers can also tune in from any web browser. A basic sponsorship to participate in the mission is only $1, which allows the sponsor to tweet a single message into space.

For more information, visit the Kickstarter page to check out the variety of packages Southern Stars and MacTech have lined up for the event.

TMCnet's Smarter Utility Week in Review

- Alert), developer of computer hardware systems and enterprise software products, has introduced Oracle Utilities Operational Device Management. This software is meant to aid utilities in managing the change, configuration and inventory of smart grid assets for operational efficiency. Oracle Utilities Operational Device Management was developed to meet the asset management needs of "smart devices," allowing the software to act as a middle man between traditional devices and more complex devices."The addition of 'smart devices' into the utility infrastructure is changing business operations across the enterprise. Utilities have been challenged to manage these new operations efficiently as traditional asset management systems cannot handle the complexity," commented Rodger Smith, senior vice president and general manager of Oracle Utilities, adding, "Oracle Utilities Operational Device Management helps manage the intricacy of smart devices with more speed, accuracy and cost savings, which will lead to greater operational efficiencies for utilities."

And finally, during a summer of record heat and drought (did we all just think, climate change?), U.S. electric utilities are helping customers save money on energy and savor some winnings—just for visiting their social media sites. We did a strictly casual survey of utilities’ sites on Facebook (News - Alert)—where they have, perhaps, the biggest social media presence—and found the following: At the Arizona Public Service page, Energy Activist Steve Nash is waiting to give guests “13 Energy Assists” (on the order of, “Replace old incandescent bulbs with CFLS”); as well as the use of a carbon calculator (for ratepayers only); and a listing a events where you can meet him in the flesh (including the Maricopa Home and Garden Show in Phoenix on August 3). Xcel Energy of Colorado offers an “Efficiency Proficiency Test” tied into a sweepstakes. The utility says, “’Like’ this page and test your energy Efficiency Proficiency ... you can enter for a chance to win $1,000 toward new ENERGY STAR (News - Alert) appliances.” We presume that include air conditioners! And at the TXU Energy (Texas) website, the hotter the weather gets, the richer the winners of an ongoing sweepstakes become. The jackpot rises along with the temperature–up to $10,000. With the heat at 104 degrees this week in Texas, it’s almost like striking gold. The success of these programs is strictly debatable. Duke Energy (News - Alert) (North Carolina) has become one of the largest utilities in the nation since its merger with Progress Energy. Yet, the Duke Youtility page on Facebook has only 3,271 “Likes,” as of this week—and most of the recent comments are complaints about power failures and rate increases. However, it’s probably better to have a social media presence than to be missing in action. Most customers become interested in their electricity only when it doesn’t work, experts say—but then, they hit your social media sites by the thousands. Asking them to “Like” you at that point might be a stretch.

Newer MacBook Airs Receive Power Nap Update, Retina MacBook Coming Soon

After releasing OS X Mountain Lion and a slew of supporting application updates on Wednesday, you'd think Apple would have taken a break -- but instead, new MacBook Air owners received a firmware update to enable the new Power Nap feature.

Apple posted a support document which details the Power Nap feature of OS X Mountain Lion, noting "an SMC update is required to gain all the functionality" with this hot new feature. For now, there are only three MacBook models supported -- and for one of them, the feature is still MIA.

The mid-2011 and mid-2012 MacBook Air models received the required SMC update on Wednesday night, so users who have updated to OS X Mountain Lion can begin taking advantage of the operating system's stealth-like features, even while the notebook is asleep.

So what gets done while a notebook is Power Napping? Ironically, almost everything. The support document details an extensive list that at first glance might have you believing the Mac isn't going to sleep at all, which includes receiving new messages in Mail, new invites or calendar updates in Calendar, changes made elsewhere in Contacts, Reminders or Notes and even Photo Stream updates.

Apple claims that Power Nap is even more impressive while your Mac notebook is plugged into AC power, where it's also capable of downloading software updates, making backups via Time Machine, performing Spotlight indexing and even updating Help Center.

About the only bad news in this support document is that the swanky new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display has no required SMC update available -- at least not yet. It's still listed as "coming soon," but given how busy Apple has been this week, we can probably forgive them for being tardy on this one thing.

Path 2.5 Introduces Larger Photos, More Sharing Options

With its privacy gaffe earlier this year squarely behind them, the folks at Path are forging ahead with new features to make sharing with loved ones better than ever. Bigger photos, movie and book sharing and more are all on deck in Path 2.5.

Path has released version 2.5 for both iOS and Android, and despite some recent service slowdowns due to explosive growth for the app, the focus with this version is all about speed and enhancements to existing features.

Path 2.5 finally allows users to snap photos using the iPhone's volume button, just like the built-in Camera app. Likewise, a single tap on the photo screen will kick off a video recording. Your photos will look better than ever thanks to the update taking full advantage of the screen real estate of your device, and new filters round out the photographic goodies in this version.

But it doesn't stop there: In addition to sharing music, Path users can now tag movies or books from the same place, so your friends can be envious when you're watching the latest hot movie or reading a new best-seller.

Path has also introduced a Nudge feature -- similar to Facebook's Poke, Nudge is aimed at encouraging your friends and family to post more frequently or even suggest others to connect with.

"And invitations on Path are even more personal," the service notes on its blog. "You can record and send a voice message: 'Join Path, mama!' 'Start sharing with me cuz’!' You get the idea. We’ll let you put your own spin on it."

Finally, Path 2.5 makes it easier than ever to get started for new users. As always, the free app is available for iOS in the App Store and also Google Play for Android lovers.

Sprint Q2 2012 Not So Rosy, iPhone Sales Hang in There at Nearly 1.5 Million

By now we've heard quarterly results from almost everyone, but Sprint is saving the best for last -- probably because they have little to shout from the rooftops about yet again.

Sprint has released its Q2 2012 financials (PDF link) and the company has again posted an insanely large loss of $1.4 billion against $7.3 billion in total sales. That looks even more grim than it sounds when you consider the company lost $847 million in the same quarter last year.

But the company is choosing to look on the bright side, boasting about its mere 1.69 percent churn rate -- a record low for the third-place carrier.

Apple might have us believe that iCloud is the end-all, be-all of sync, but not everyone feels comfortable storing valuable data in the cloud. Using iCloud on the Mac requires OS X Lion, leaving Snow Leopard users out in the cold. And of course, if you dare to use an Android phone, you’re out of luck. This is where SyncMate hopes to find its niche, stretching beyond Apple’s own modest ambitions.

Best Case Scenario - Hammerhead Leather Bluetooth Keyboard Case for iPad

by Daniel Turk 0Comments

As the iPad becomes increasingly popular in the business space, Hammerhead has released a stylish keyboard case that's fitting for the enterprise.

This case has tremendous usage and durability. It's classy on the outside and performance ready on the inside. Its beautiful leather exteriors come in both red and black, designed to fit into any work environment. The interior is lined with scratch-proof fabric that won't scratch the iPad's shiny chassis.

Inside, there's a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard that's velcro-attached and works up to eight hours on one charge. The keyboard can be removed entirely and used up to 30-feet away. The case also comes with a silicone-tipped stylus that works wonders.

The only true downside to this accessory is the weight it adds to your device. The weight is added for good reason however, as this iPad  case is packed with features and really helps you get your job done.

The bottom line: This accessory is perfect for the business environment.

Google Nexus 7 Review

by Andrew Hayward 0Comments

Seemingly tired of watching its third-party partners fumble the Android tablet experience--aside from Amazon and its successful, albeit locked-down Kindle Fire--Google stepped in, teaming up with Asus to develop the Nexus 7, easily the best Android slate yet. It’s a startlingly slick take on the 7-inch tablet concept, packing pure Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) within its well-considered form factor. And while the Nexus 7 doesn’t match up on many levels with the iPad, it offers a remarkably polished experience at the entry price of $199.

Compared to the like-sized Kindle Fire, the Nexus 7 feels dramatically sleeker at just .41 inches thick, putting it just a smidge ahead of the new iPad (0.37 inch), though its overall size and slim heft of just 12 ounces make it ideal for reading one-handed. Nexus 7’s rubberized backing feels great in the hand, and doesn’t detract from the premium feel of the device. Aside from power and volume buttons found on the upper-right, the device relies wholly on Android’s virtual buttons for navigation.

Thursday Recap: Google Earth Goes 3D, Time Honors Steve Jobs, Boxcar Update

So how's that OS X Mountain Lion working out for everyone, one day later? We're seeing an annoying issue with our MacBook Pro with Retina Display losing track of our USB 3.0 hub whenever the notebook sleeps, but otherwise it's been smooth sailing. Speaking of sailing, have you flown over L.A. or Boston or even San Francisco lately? Now you can, thanks to Google Earth 7.0. This and a few other tidbits make up our recap for Thursday, July 26, 2012.

Google Earth for iOS Beats Apple to the 3D Imaging Punch

Those cool 3D maps included with iOS 6 may still be a few months away, but if you have an iPhone 4S or recent iPad, you can get a taste of what they'll be like right now. That's because search giant Google has pushed out Google Earth 7.0 today, adding the ability to "take flight above entire cities in 3D." The only downside is the experience is limited to a handful of cities right now, so if Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva or Rome aren't on your virtual bucket list, you'll have to wait a bit. Google promises "new additions in the coming weeks," but also notes you'll need an iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or new iPad to experience the new 3D imagery (the rest of the app works fine with any device running iOS 4.3 or later). The update also adds a "tour guide" mode for exploring places around you, including favorite cities, historic landmarks and natural wonders, and is available as always, free of charge from the App Store.

Time Names Steve Jobs One of 20 Most Influential of All Time

He may have been robbed of being the Person of the Year in 2011, but Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is now receiving far more acclaim from the publishers of Time magazine by being included in its list of "The 20 Most Influential Americans of All Time." We certainly wouldn't argue with the former CEO's inclusion, particularly when it includes legendary figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. In fact, Jobs is the sole member of the list whose impact was largely felt from the 1980's to present as number 20 in chronological order.

It gives users a new option, one that may well feel more secure, and as such, serves as an inducement to buy. If buying online is easier, safer and simpler, then more people may well do it. Apple Unleashes OS X Mountain Lion into Mac App Store

Happy Mountain Lion Day! If you're ready to upgrade your Mac, you'll be happy to know that OS X Mountain Lion is now ready for purchase and download in the Mac App Store.

Apple has released OS X Mountain Lion to the Mac App Store and as promised, the upgrade is a mere $19.99.

"OS X Mountain Lion is the latest release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system," the app description reads. "Mountain Lion includes over 200 new features to update your Mac into the best computing experience yet. With the new Messages app you can send text, photos, videos, contacts, web links, and documents to anyone using another Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- you can even start a conversation on one device and continue it on another.

"The new Share button makes it easy to share files, web pages, photos, and videos, as well as tweet right from the app you are using," the description continues. "With the Reminders app you can create to-do lists and alerts that appear in the new Notification Center. With Notes you can write down all your ideas and even speak your words with voice dictation. How to Claim Your Free OS X Mountain Lion for a New Qualifying Mac

OS X Mountain Lion finally came down off the -- well, mountain! -- this week and leapt onto the Mac App Store, where it can now be purchased for a mere $19.99. But did you know that any Mac purchased since June 11, 2012 qualifies for a free update? Here's how to claim yours.

Apple has long made it worth buying a new Mac by offering eligible customers a free update to the next major version of Mac OS X, and this week's launch of OS X Mountain Lion is no exception.

Even though an update to OS X Mountain Lion is a mere $19.99 from the Mac App Store -- a drop in the bucket compared to previous full-version upgrades -- there's no reason why you should have to toss another 20 bucks in Apple's direction after spending a thousand bucks or more for the latest and greatest hardware.

That's where OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program comes into play. Qualifying new Macs purchased between June 11 and July 25, 2012 are eligible for a free update to OS X Mountain Lion, provided they submit their request by August 24, 2012; qualifying purchases made on or after July 26, 2012 will have 30 days from date of purchase to get theirs.

That means the clock is running for all of you 2012 MacBook Pro/Air buyers, but it also applies to anyone who's invested in an eligible Mac in recent weeks. The process is pretty painless, so here's what to expect.

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover Review

by Susie Ochs 0Comments

The iPad is the perfect travel companion since it can play music and movies over the course of a long flight without running out of power. It’s lighter than the lightest MacBook Air. And when it’s time to hunker down and get some work done, the one-app-at-a-time reality of iOS keeps me focused on what I need to do instead of juggling windows and getting sucked in to online shoe shopping.

But you need some accessories to really make the iPad your ultimate copilot: an external battery like the HyperMac is always handy; a good case keeps your baby from picking up scratches; a stand can keep your iPad at the right angle for work or watching Netflix; and an external keyboard is essential when you need to type more than a quick email.

Apple Releases Safari 6 for OS X Lion with Offline Reading List, Smart Search

OS X Lion may be dead and gone, but that doesn't mean those who choose to ignore OS X Mountain Lion will be entirely left out in the cold -- Apple has just pushed out Safari 6 for last year's big cat which brings all of the same cool features.

Apple has released Safari 6 for OS X Lion on Wednesday, which helps those of us who can't (or don't want to) upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion have at least a little feature parity with our Mac brothers and sisters who have moved on to the latest big cat.

New features include the Smart Search Field, which brings a Google Chrome-style omnibar to Safari at long last. That means there's just one field for typing both URLs or searches.

Safari's Reading List has also gotten beefed up with offline mode. Users can now save an entire webpage and have it synced via iCloud for reading anytime, even when there's no internet connection available.

Do Not Track is another new feature which prevents websites from tracking you online while using Safari 6, and a new Password pane helps manage your saved website logins right from the browser.

Safari 6 also includes Baidu support for Chinese users as well as a number of improvements to stability, compatibility, usability and security. These include the ability to now swipe to navigate while viewing PDF files, restore the state of Reading List when Safari is launched, fix an issue with full-screen video in webpages that have positioned content and restore the user's previous cookies after Private Browsing without the need to relaunch Safari.

Whew! Lots of cool stuff for OS X Lion users, so head to Software Update and download your Safari 6 update today.

Layout Review

by Michael Simon 0Comments

While it might not be as powerful as its name suggests, Layout brings a fresh style of design to the iPad, with a clean interface, brilliant menu approach, and robust color palette that rivals the most powerful desktop publishing software.

With Layout, you can create neat, modular collages with up to 16 pictures and captions, customized borders, and in-app photo enhancing. There's nothing here that hasn't been done before, but Juicy Bits takes it to a new level with a magnificent interface; photo boxes are divided with a quick swipe, and the toolbar -- one of the best I've ever used -- spins into action with a single tap.

80 OS X Mountain Lion Tips and Tricks

Mountain Lion strolled onto the scene earlier this year, with a lot of interest but no showy unveiling. Apple gave the world a better glimpse at its newest big cat at the World Wide Developers Conference, reserving a good chunk of the June 10 keynote for more details about the next iteration of OS X, which dropped in July in the Mac App Store for just $19.99, the lowest price yet for an OS X upgrade.

With Mountain Lion, Apple has brought a bunch of useful iOS features over to the Mac, including AirPlay mirroring, Messages, Reminders, Twitter, and iCloud support throughout the OS. Join our Mac safari to see 80 Mountain Lion features that you may have missed since you clicked Install in the Mac App Store. Some will make you more productive, while others are just fun and make your life a bit easier. Not everyone will fall in love with all 80 of these features, but together they’ll give you a lot to sink your teeth into.

Robots Following Doctors Around? Now Robots are the Doctors

- Alert) conversation,” Wilson writes. The solution has cameras, microphones, 3-D mapping sensors, and a stethoscope. The robot can transmit and receive video, audio, and navigation directions. RP-VITA can also take measurements by connecting to other devices like otoscopes and ultrasound.

The RP-VITA is the first remote presence solution for patient care that combines the latest in telemedicine technology from InTouch Health with the autonomous navigation and mobility developed for the iRobot Ava mobile robotics platform.

A company press release notes that the RP-VITA “improves patient care by ensuring the physician is in the right place at the right time and has access to the necessary clinical information to take immediate action.”

RP-VITA is a result of a joint development and licensing agreement the two companies announced a year ago and broadened earlier this year. An expandable telemedicine technology platform, the RP-VITA is part of a total acute care telemedicine solution, which includes the technologies and support infrastructure of the InTouch Telemedicine System.

Wilson quotes InTouch chief executive, Yulun Wang, stating, “Telemedicine is about getting the right expertise to the right place at the right time. If a patient has a stroke and comes into the emergency room, you'd better get a stroke neurologist there quickly.” RP-VITA allows doctors to do just that.”

The RP-VITA also includes a state-of-the-art mapping system for navigation, and can be integrated with live patient data from electronic medical records, providing real-time access to information and improving workflow for healthcare professionals. A new, simple-to-use iPad1 user interface will allow the robot quickly and easily navigate wherever it needs to go, as well as provide interaction with the patient, family and care team.

In January, iRobot invested $6 million in InTouch Health, expanding the joint development and licensing agreement formed in 2011, which was established to explore opportunities for healthcare applications on iRobot platforms, including iRobot Ava.
