Smart Cities: the 'Mayors Challenge' and Creation of Next Generation SEARCH

- Alert) Haifa Research Lab, Imperial College London, City of Santander, PRISA Digital, Telesto and Consorzio S3 Log.

Dr Iadh Ounis, of the University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science, made a series of comments about goals and objectives: “The SMART project will be built upon an open-source search engine technology known as Terrier we have been developing at the University since 2004, and we’re pleased to be involved in this innovative research initiative.”

He added that, “The SMART engine will be able to answer high-level queries by automatically identifying cameras, microphones and other sensors that can contribute to the query, then synthesizing results stemming from distributed sources in an intelligent way... SMART builds upon the existing concept of ‘smart cities’, physical spaces which are covered in an array of intelligent sensors which communicate with each other and can be searched for information. The search results sourced from these smart cities can be reused across multiple applications, making the system more effective.

As a bit of an FYI, it was also noted that this is not some pie-in-the-sky futurist project. The expectation is that SMART will be ready for testing in a real city by 2014.”

While this is a European project, it is interesting that with the exception of IBM most of the big players in the smart city space have not signed up to participate yet. Indeed, notable by their absence are communications service providers who one would have thought would like to be in on the ground floor along with Google, Microsoft and now Apple (News

TMCnet Next Generation Communications Week in Review

- Alert) to distribute Aruba's ClearPass Access Management Solutions. Ascom (News - Alert) Testing announced a partnership agreement with GCT Semiconductor (News - Alert) producing an integrated solution that eliminates the need for multiple tools, reducing costs and saving time and effort for operations staff.

Features

The featured articles focused on two critical and growing markets: machine-to-machine (M2M) deployments; and the changing nature of data centers.

Applications Enablement:  TMCnet Contributing Editor Susan Campbell had an interesting piece that looked at the keys to success that can be employed by service providers to maximize their opportunities in M2M.

High Leverage Network:  Susan investigated how the demand for increased capture, usage, storage and manipulation of data in enterprises has heightened the need for transformation of the data center network. This amplified points made in webinar a few weeks ago, “The Why, When, and How of Network Convergence,” where critical aspects of data/storage network convergence were highlighted along with the need for them to become applications fluent.

From the Blogs

The highlight this week was one on improving the customer experience. It has become a central theme of our time for competitive as well as practical reasons.

In one featured blog, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), and how next generation architecture and platforms can help service providers meet the challenges of delivering great user experiences without blowing the bank on costs caught the attention of Mae Kowalke.  And, Erin Harrison took a look at the Alcatel-Lucent Motive’s solutions portfolio to examine how service providers can provide, better manage and monetize improved customer experiences.

This week my favorites, Alcatel-Lucent’s e-zines Enriching Communications and Alcatel-Lucent TechZine,  produced had several items that caught my interest and attention. Enriching Communications had two on how service providers can make money: It Pays to be Proactive, and Dynamic Policy Management: An Engine for Network Monetization. TechZine also had two I recommend:  VDSL2 Vectoring in a Multi-operator Environment – Separating Fact from Fiction, and The 400G Photonic Service Engine.

Enjoy the holidays.
