Apple Expands App Stores to 32 New Countries

Mentioned briefly during the WWDC 2012 keynote, Apple has notified iOS and Mac developers that their work can now be sold in 32 new countries around the world. Jeez, we didn't even know Mauritania was a real place!

Apple has issued an email to iOS and Mac developers through its iTunes Connect portal, notifying them that 32 new territories have been added to the App Store lineup, which should be a nice way to rack up some additional revenue for their hard work.

"Before you can sell your apps in the new territories, you must agree to the new iOS Paid Applications or Mac OS X Paid Applications contract," the email to developers reads. "Once you have agreed to the new contracts, your apps will be available in all new territories."

To make life easier, sales in the 32 new countries will be done in U.S. dollars rather than the local currency.

So where can you now find the App Store and Mac App Store?

It's available in Albania, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chad, Congo, Fiji, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Micronesia, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Sao Tome e Principe, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Zimbabwe. Whew!

Kudos to the 32 new countries now enjoying the App Stores, and be sure to chime in on the comments if you're reading from any of these places.

Just one question: Is Swaziland like a place where they worship Patrick Swayze? Because that would be kind of cool...

Company of Heroes Complete: Campaign Edition Review

Even if you’re suffering from Second World War fatigue after all the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games of the last decade, Company of Heroes can put a fresh slant on the proceedings. It’s not only the most friendly, accessible, and involving of any strategy game we’ve played, but also the closest you can get to taking part in World War II without straying into first-person shooter territory and thus losing the depth that a strategy game can deliver.

Despite its age (it debuted on Windows in 2006), the game looks great, with tons of visual detail. Fully rendered 3D models provide convincing environments, equipment, and individual units. And, unusual for a strategy game, you can zoom right into the action to get up close and personal with your squads, watching the action unfold from an almost first-person perspective.

It’s easy to play. You direct the action of entire squads, and can’t issue orders to individual combatants. This keeps the pace up and prevents the game getting bogged down in endless fiddling. You select a squad, then order it to move, find cover, or close in on enemy units, who will then automatically fight. When you select a target area, each squad member’s theoretical position is plotted on the screen, so it’s possible through small pointer adjustments to get them positioned exactly how you want them

Apple Posts FAQ on Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

Although it would seem pretty straightforward, Apple has posted a frequently asked questions page for its new Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, which answers any burning questions you might have about the $29 dongle.

Apple has updated its support website with a new Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter: Frequently Asked Questions entry, posing six questions that users might ask about the $29 dongle, along with comforting answers and resolutions to any potential issues.

Such as: Yes, you can use the adapter with any Thunderbolt-equipped Mac running OS X Lion 10.7.4 or later, but you'll want to install the Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1 if your Mac was released prior to this month.

Yes, you can connect the adapter to any Thunderbolt port, including the pass-through port on an Apple Thunderbolt Display or third-party device. However, take note that other devices in the chain could adversely affect performance.

"Mass Storage and other high-bandwidth devices can affect the performance of this adapter," the FAQ notes. "If you have issues mixing this adapter with such devices, connect it directly to another Thunderbolt port on your computer, or connect it to a low-bandwidth device on the Thunderbolt chain."

That is, unless you only have one Thunderbolt port, in which case you're pretty much up the creek without a paddle, as the saying goes.

One last tip: No, the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter can't be used on a Mac without Thunderbolt, even if you're able to plug it into that old Mini DisplayPort jack. But you already knew that, didn't you

Virtua Tennis Challenge Review

by AJ Dellinger 0Comments

No matter how far technology advances, some things manage to stick around. For Virtua Tennis Challenge, that means doing its best to convince the player that it's not just Pong in a fancy new package. While the graphics are impressive and Sega's modern offering serves up more game modes than the 70's classic, it also falls short in some areas where even the simplest of games have excelled.

Bringing the classic Virtua Tennis series to iOS should have been game, set, and match for Sega; swiping to smack a ball across the court certainly sounds intuitive, at least. But the game hits a fault right out of the gate with unresponsive and clunky controls -- even after the tutorial, you'll do more floundering and aimless swinging than anything else. Luckily, there are other control schemes buried in the settings that draw upon the series' arcade roots by putting a joystick and buttons on the screen. Once the change is made, it's far easier to send perfect serves and slicing slams back at the opponent.

You'll need the alternate controls to take on the various game modes, which aim to present unique challenges. The SPY World Tour has players battling their way up the rankings ladder through tournaments, though aside from changing the name and birth date, the characters are disappointingly unchangeable. Exhibition and quick match modes are also available, but despite different courts, opponents, and play styles, the matches rarely feel distinct. And the online play is sadly lag-filled and prone to dropped connections, robbing the game of a key feature.

The bottom line. Like playing the sport with a hole-filled racquet, enjoying Virtua Tennis Challenge often proves futile.

How to Add Pizazz to Your iBook

by Chris Slate, Graham Barlow, and J.R. Bookwalter 0Comments

So far you've authored a basic iBook and can carry a test version of it around on your own iPad, but there's so much more you can do! Let's spruce up your book a bit and get it out to the world.

1. Add Interactive Widgets

Widgets can add a lot of fun and useful interactivity to your pages, and they’re super-easy to use. Simply click the Widgets icon at the top center of the main window and choose one of the seven Widget options. The two most useful are probably Gallery, which is used to create image slideshows, and Media, which allows you to add a video clip. In either case, choosing a Widget from the Widget pull-down menu will place an empty box onto the page. All you have to do to fill the box is grab the associated media from your desktop (whether it’s a movie clip or a group of images) and drag it over.

Free App Friday: Martha Stewart CraftStudio

This is a heck of a download (Holy 234 MB, Batman!), but oh-my-god Martha Stewart you couldn't have made me happier. Until July 8, you can get the Martha Stewart CraftStudio for the completely absurd price of absolutely nothing! And if you like digitally scrapbooking your memories, this app is pretty fantastic.

The Martha Stewart CraftStudio lets you make cards, invitations, thank you notes, keepsakes, and anything else you might need to make a cheesy, adorable digital card to send off to your family and friends. The app features four free sets of embellishments and you can also purchase additional packs if you're really getting use out of the app.

After you've finished your project you can print it out via AirPrint, share it digitally, or upload it to Snapfish to have it printed professionally. I tell you, it's way easier than busting out the scissors and glue.

VX Small Rucksack Review

We reviewed Mission Workshop’s Vandal backpack last year, and while we were impressed by the fact that it could carry a lot of stuff, we were not happy with its lack of protective padding for a MacBook. This time around, we appreciated how the VX Small Rucksack includes a little more structure for your stuff, but Mission Workshop missed the boat on the laptop padding once again.

If you like your backpacks like you like your bike tires--rugged and able to withstand wet terrain--the Rucksack is fantastic. The backpack is made of very durable synthetic fabric inside and out, and its waterproof shell keeps rain droplets from reaching your precious MacBook. As an added bonus, you can wear the backpack in two sizes: small or large--it depends on what you have in it and how you Velcro the top. The large zippered pocket inside the main compartment is perfect for a MacBook or an iPad, and the bag could easily hold a weekend’s worth of clothing, shoes, and then some. You’ll find five other pockets and compartments too, including two zippered pockets on the front for cords and things, a Velcro compartment, and a pocket deep enough to hold a long U-lock for your bike. The Rucksack also features what Mission Workshop calls the Arkiv closure system, which is a metal buckle that slides onto two tightly secured corduroy straps to secure the pack together.

The Rucksack won’t move around on your back while you’re biking, but an optional $30 waist belt can provide added security. Mission Workshop also added a padded lining between your back and where your MacBook sits on the inside, but that does nothing to protect the MacBook. You’ll still need a padded laptop sleeve if you plan on carting it around.

The bottom line. You shouldn’t discount this backpack entirely because of the lack of padding. It’s great at hauling things for the biking journeyman (or woman) as long as you have your MacBook in its own carrying case.

Friday Recap: Apple Staff Get Mountain Lion, Acorn Going Retina, Surface Wi-Fi

Just because Apple blessed us with a Retina Display-enhanced MacBook Pro this month, that doesn't mean every Mac is going to get them right away. That's the word on the street for this lazy Friday in late June, with a week left to go before the clock turns to July and we begin the wait for OS X Mountain Lion. In the meantime, take in some tech news for this fine Friday, June 22, 2012.

Apple Enlists Retail Staff for Final OS X Mountain Lion Beta Testing

It's been quite a week for Apple retail employees, with reports surfacing of pay raises, the company's new discount program and now this: According to 9to5Mac, Apple Genius Bar and Creatives have been given access to a near-final build of OS X Mountain Lion as part of the AppleSeed testing program in an effort to put the software through its paces and squash any remaining bugs ahead of the release next month. It's a great move for Apple, who will no doubt again have plenty of customers with slow internet connections at home bringing their Macs into the store to download the operating system update, much as they did last year with OS X Lion -- and now staff members will be ready and waiting with hours of use already under their belts.

Acorn Developer Teases "Retina Canvas" for Upcoming Version 3.3

Now that the MacBook Pro with Retina Display has ushered in a new era of high definition for Mac users, the floodgates should soon open and send forth a wave of Retina-enabled apps. One of them will be Flying Meat's Acorn image editor, which developer Gus Mueller is currently "Retinafying" with version 3.3, introducing what he calls Retina Canvas. "A Retina Canvas is when one pixel equals one physical dot on your hardware display, even though all the other UI elements in Acorn are redrawn

The Darkness II Review

the term actually works.

Protagonist Jackie Estacado has moved up in the criminal underworld, and is now the Don of his own crime family. He’s kept his demonic Darkness powers at bay for some time, but after an assassination attempt, those black tentacles make their way out again. From there, you’ll spend the rest of the game knocking out streetlights, blowing holes in enemies, eating hearts, and generally feeling like a demonic Charles Bronson.

TextExpander 4 Available, Skips Mac App Store Due to Sandboxing Requirement

If there's one Mac utility we couldn't live without, it would probably be TextExpander, which saves us countless thousands of extra keystrokes each year. The software got a big update today, but don't go looking for it in the Mac App Store.

Smile Software has announced the availability of TextExpander 4, a major update to its popular Mac typing shortcut tool that promises to automate even more of your keystrokes.

Version 4 includes a new option for "fill-in-the-blank" snippets, which come in handy for form letters that can be personalized with names, dates and other information once expanded. Fill-ins are also available for multi-line text fields, popup menus for multiple choices and optional text blocks that can be added as needed.

TextExpander 4 also introduces a new Snippet Creation Assistant, a step-by-step method for creating your own snippets based on individual needs.

"TextExpander users are incredibly creative at finding new ways of automating their work," said Greg Scown, TextExpander developer and Smile founder. "With the additional fill-in snippet options, we've given them even more ways to do that."

Unfortunately, all of TextExpander 4's goodness comes with one caveat: Due to the Mac App Store's new sandboxing requirement, the app cannot be sold there and must be purchased directly from Smile.

"Because TextExpander 4 cannot be 'sandboxed,' it is not available on the Mac App Store," the release notes explain. "TextExpander 4 is signed with a Developer ID from Apple to meet the requirements of Gatekeeper in the forthcoming OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)."

Thankfully, upgrades from earlier versions are only $15 (free if you've purchased after January 15, 2012), which includes the Mac App Store version. New customers can purchase for $34.95, and Family Pack and Office Pack licenses are also available. Purchases can be made at the company's website or directly from within the app itself.

Launch Center Pro Makes Your iPhone Shortcut Dream a Reality

Still longing for speed dial on your iPhone after all these years? Although Launch Center Pro can do far more than that for power users, the app is also the best way to initiate contact with loved ones with ninja-like precision.

App Cubby has released Launch Center Pro on Thursday, a significant leap forward over the developer's Launch Center app. While users will have to pay all over again for this entirely new app, the good news is that it's 40 percent off for a limited time.

"It’s like speed dial, but for more than just phone calls!" the app description teases. "Launch Center Pro creates lightning quick shortcuts to specific features burried deep within apps. Call a loved one, message a friend, launch Instagram’s camera to quickly snap a pic, tweet, or turn your iPhone into a flashlight. Launch Center Pro gets you to where you’re going faster than ever before!"

Among the sample shortcuts Launch Center Pro offers are buttons for calling Mom, messaging a friend, emailing your boss, searching Twitter via Tweebot, creating a new item in Ominifocus, searching Yelp for nearby coffee shops, instantly firing up Instagram's camera, jumping straight into your favorite website and a whole lot more.

Best of all, Launch Center Pro launched on Thursday (see what we did there?) at the discounted price of only $2.99, a 40 percent price cut for a limited time only.

Launch Center Pro is available now from the App Store; the app is compatible with all devices running iOS 5.0 or later.

Futulele Review

by Nathan Meunier 0Comments

Billed as the "Ukulele of the Future," the cleverly named Futulele does indeed deliver on its high-tech premise. This easy-to-use ukulele simulator lets you rock out Hawaiian-style, whether you're keen on busting out your best Tiny Tim impression or strumming more serious four-string grooves.

As a virtual instrument, Futulele does a good job of emulating the real deal -- right down to the way you hold your iPad on its side like an actual ukulele to play. It feels comfortably guitar-like, and strumming the four on-screen strings yields an impressive range of sound that adjusts to your strum intensity. The strings respond individually too, giving your playing a more natural sound that's more realistic than mere canned chord samples.

A grid with room for 12 programmable slots lets you customize your musical palette using the full range of actual chord choices. Once set, all you do is tap a chord on the grid and the strings change to those notes automatically as you strum them. For greater realism, you can link an iPod Touch or iPhone to your iPad and use the smaller extra screen as a virtual guitar neck for changing chords. It's clever, though not necessarily that practical unless you've got multiple iOS devices on-hand.

Futulele sounds realistic enough when you play it, but fiddling around with a handful of optional FX settings broaden the musical range of this app slightly. Reverb, a 3-band EQ, Chorus, and Delay all have adjustable switches that can be toggled and tweaked to fine-tune your sound. They're not as expansive as what you might find in a rock guitar simulator; this is a ukulele after all, yet the extras are indeed welcome.

The bottom line. Futulele works well, especially if you've always wanted to pick up a ukulele but don't feel like shelling out the cash for the real thing. Even so, it comes off as more a novelty than anything else, but it's a rad musical toy if you feel so inclined to dabble.

Days Are Numbered for Traditional Firewall Technology

- Alert), which closed on its acquisition of the company this past May.

“I think we will have a very good chance to do that under the Dell umbrella,” he noted. “We bring technology to the table, Dell brings tremendous market reach, tremendous channel reach, tremendously large sales force, and just the two coming together.”

The acquisition also helps SonicWALL stack up well against competitors such as Check Point and Fortinet (News - Alert).

“We expect SonicWALL's mature technology and their unique channel partner ecosystem to integrate very well with Dell's software and networking vision, while SonicWALL’s investment in enterprise technology may well become a disruptor in that market,” said Scott Crawford, research director for industry analyst firm Enterprise Management Associates, in an announcement about the acquisition.

NetScout Aims to Simplify Performance Management

is that it really changes the landscape of the performance management market,” Shalita said. “This is typically technology that’s been bought from third-party vendors. What we’re doing is really simplifying the architectural environment, bringing that into the same layer as the monitoring system itself to simplify vendor complexity but give them more control over network traffic and performance and management functions.”

He continued: “As the network monitoring switch market now changes, and we see some drive towards consolidation, NetScout is in a real good position to deliver greater value to our customers so they can work with single-vendor to really simplify their overall architecture.”

In April, the company also introduced nGenius Forensic Intelligence, an analysis module for the nGenius Service Assurance Solution that enables network operations and information security teams to accelerate forensic analysis of network traffic with automated, accurate and contextual session reconstruction and visual replay for security-focused investigations.

In the face of an evolving array of data security challenges, enterprises are now tuning their security strategies to create more data-centric focused approaches that strengthen their post-incident forensic analysis capabilities. Even with today’s network forensic tools, though, the ability to swiftly investigate security incidents by reconstructing and analyzing network activity has proven difficult and complicated.

nGenius Forensic Intelligence removes the complexity associated with network forensic analysis activities by delivering contextual visualization of IP communications sessions with automated reconstruction and contextual visual replay of a targeted session, enabling a incident investigator to see exactly what a user saw. The incident investigator can replay individual events, or all events sequentially in precise chronological order with a simple point-and-click action.

“We see the next frontier for performance management as being leveraged now more for security activities,” noted Shalita. nGenius Forensic Intelligence is part of that trend.

“That will prove to be extremely valuable in fraud investigations and other types of targeted activities,” he added. “But I think you will see that technology will also make a lot of sense as you leverage it to manage user experience more effectively as well. So, today a security play, tomorrow even more in the toolset of service management.”

RFMD Releases 3 New Chipsets

- Alert) also claims that the chipsets are suited for satellite communications and high-exposure solutions like military radar and electronic warfare.

RFMD is a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance radio frequency components. RFMD is known for its mobility and enhanced connectivity throughout the point-to-point radio market as well as the wireless local area network (WLAN or Wi-Fi) and cable television (CATV)/broadband, SmartEnergy/advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) industries. Based in Greensboro, North Carolina, RFMD is exceptional at engineering very small, very powerful components and less exceptional at announcing their news to the world. The press release was delivered via PDF through the largely unsecure RFMD shareholder's website and left quite a bit to be desired in the way of pizzazz.

But RFMD delivers the goods. The press release was synchronized with a hands-on demonstration at the International Microwave Symposium in Montreal Canada. Though you might not be able to read much about the new chipsets, production quantities are already available through RFMD's website and all ordinary RMDF sales channels.

Gartner: Enterprise Software Spending to Rise 4.5 percent in 2012

- Alert)) deployments representing extensions to, or replacement of, existing applications and new solutions.”

The major application areas are business intelligence; content, communications and collaboration; customer relationship management, digital content creation, enterprise resource planning, personal productivity software, project and portfolio management and supply chain management.

Enterprise resource planning in particular is the biggest market segment, with projected revenue of $24.9 billion this year. Office suites come in second at $16.5 billion. Business intelligence is expected to reach $13 billion, while CRM packages are expected to exceed that.

Businesses are looking to shift upfront capital expenses to operational expenses. This usually means turning to the cloud, using Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) and virtualization services instead of traditional software packages. Vendors are positioning them as more cost-effective than conventional software packages and offering a simple upgrade path.

“After more than a decade of SaaS and cloud service use, adoption continues to grow and evolve within the enterprise application markets. This is occurring as tighter capital budgets demand leaner alternatives, popularity and familiarity with the model increase, and interest in SaaS and cloud computing grows,” Eid said. “Adoption varies between and within markets. Although use is expanding to a wider range of applications and solutions, the most widespread use is still characterized by horizontal applications with common processes, among distributed virtual workforce teams and within Web 2.0 initiatives.”

SaaS services are expected to grow over the next several years, from 11 percent of enterprise spending in 2010 to 16 percent in 2015. Eid said that this was due to buyers weighing their options and increasing confidence as the economy recovers.

Plex for iOS 2.4 Gains Social Features, Media Deletion

We love us some Plex here at MacLife.com, so every new update is a bit of a treat for us. If you love Plex and also love your friends, then you'll want to rush to the App Store to grab version 2.4 of the iOS app, which brings a new social angle to the media streamer.

The folks at Plex have announced a new Plex for iOS 2.4 over the weekend, and as usual it's loaded chock full of the good stuff users want in a media streaming app -- and a helping handful of juicy bug fixes as well.

At the top of this list are new social features. MyPlex users can now add friends to their account, then recommend media to each other or even post directly to your Facebook timeline. Simply head to your Account settings and jump into the new Friends tab to send invites -- and don't forget to link your MyPlex account with Facebook while you're at it.

The other new features may be smaller but are no less welcome, including the ability to clear cached images, launch the app via plexapp:// URL and even delete media right from within the app, assuming you're using Plex Media Server 0.9.6.1 or later.

Automatic video quality adjustment has now been restored to the app as well, which allows the app to select the most appropriate video quality for the currently available bandwidth -- up to a maximum rate which the user defines.

Plex for iOS 2.4 is now available from the App Store for $4.99 and the update is free for existing users; the universal app is compatible with all devices running iOS 4.1 or later.

Vjay Review

by Michael Simon 0Comments

Building upon the slick, familiar interface it's tweaked to perfection with Djay, Algoriddim has expanded the definition of the multitouch DJ by bringing video mash-up creation to the masses. While certain to increase the ranks of unwatchable videos on YouTube, Vjay adds to a growing list of apps that take us down avenues of creativity we might not have otherwise turned onto.

Video mashing always seemed like something I'd like to try, provided someone provided a $20 solution and reduced the learning curve. With Vjay, I made a mash-up in minutes. In a few hours, I was ready to book my first gig.

Terminal 101: Control Time Machine from the Command Line

Every Monday, we'll show you how to do something new and simple with Apple's built-in command line application. You don't need any fancy software, or a knowledge of coding to do any of these. All you need is a keyboard to type 'em out!

Time Machine is Apple’s answer to backup. It’s simple, it’s elegant, and it just works. However, you can still use the backup utility built into your Mac through the command line and over SSH. Very handy for those times when you may not have physical (or screen sharing) access to your Mac remotely.

In this week’s tip, we’ll show you some of the basics of backing up your Mac using Time Machine through the Terminal and using the tmutil program.

It should be noted that in order to use the tmutil program, you must be running Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) or later.

Group Test: 6 of the Best Web Browsers

by Craig Grannell 5Comments Safari comes with every Mac, so we pitched Apple's browser against five popular alternatives

Browsers are hugely important in modern computing. A decade ago, you might have launched one to check the occasional website, twiddling your thumbs as content downloaded painfully slowly over a dial-up modem. Today, most Mac users are on broadband 24 hours a day, and accessing news, entertainment, and even work on the internet is their main function. Modern browsers must be robust, fast and dependable, especially if you've replaced Office with Google Docs, or Mail with Gmail.

How to Control Your Mac or PC from Your iPad or iPhone

by Nik Rawlinson 0Comments

There are over 575,000 apps in the App Store. You’d think that they’d cover every conceivable base, but the truth is, there are gaps here, there, and everywhere -- missing heavy-hitters like Microsoft Access, not to mention the little Mac utilities you've come to rely on. Your only choice is to access your PC from your iOS device. Luckily, a wide range of VNC clients are available -- and some of them are even free.

LogMeIn Ingition

LogMeIn’s Ignition ($129.99) lets you control a remote Mac or PC courtesy of a free app installed on the client machine. It presents a copy of the remote desktop on your iPad or iPhone, which despite the device’s lower physical resolution, remains surprisingly usable on the portable device. It can wake a sleeping computer, so you don’t need to keep your desktop machine active to use it, and can control an unlimited number of machines, so you can access your home computer or your office machine.

Monday Recap: LastPass 2.0, Spider-Man Teaser, OS X 10.7.5 Pre-Release Beta

We know, you're all sitting by the internet waiting to see what Microsoft will be announcing tonight. But for those who aren't (or simply don't care), we're back with our usual generous helping of tech news for this post-WWDC 2012 week. It's a fairly lazy day for tech news, but that doesn't mean that you'll have to dig far to read everything happening on this Monday, June 18, 2012.

LastPass 2.0 Promises to Make Your Online Life "More Awesome"

Although we're partial to 1Password, the best Mac password manager is the one you already own and use. If that happens to be LastPass, you just got an awesome 2.0 upgrade on Monday that adds "significant improvements" to both the front end software as well as the servers running it behind the scenes. The software now supports attachments for documents and images, free credit monitoring alerts for U.S. residents, a more unified user experience and faster startup time -- and who's going to argue with all of that awesomeness? To read all about the update, head over to the LastPass blog and get your update on.

Gameloft Teases Amazing Spider-Man for Mobile

10 days doesn't sound like too long to wait for something awesome, but if you click the embedded YouTube video below and happen to be a fan of Spider-Man, that wait just got a whole lot longer. Gameloft will be releasing The Amazing Spider-Man for iPhone, iPad and Android on June 28, and the company today posted a pretty sweet look at what it will look like, complete with a prologue offering up some background on how Peter Parker came to fill the red and blue suit. Warning: Extreme disappointment will follow after watching this awesome video, but only because you can't buy it right now. Sigh...

Report: OS X 10.7.5 Pre-Release Beta in Limited Circulation

There's nothing for developers to download just yet, but AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has started external testing on OS X Lion 10.7.5, which could presumably be the last (or at least next to the last) version of the king of the jungle now that OS X Mountain Lion is coming down off the hill next month. There's no word on exactly what changes the update includes, but it's a good bet that MobileMe support -- including the preference pane and iDisk access -- will get wiped off the map once it's installed, given that the service is sunsetting at the end of June. Does that mean we'll see 10.7.5 before month's end? Not necessarily, but it shouldn't be too long now, we'd say.

Facebook Acquires KLIK Developer Face.com

Face.com announced today that the company has been acquired by Facebook, which kind of makes sense considering the two companies share four letters. (Just kidding.) The Face.com folks sound pretty stoked about being absorbed by the House that Zuck Built, and promise that mobile is a big part of the acquisition. "We love building products, and like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share content with their social graph," explains the creators of the KLIK for iOS app. "By working with Facebook directly, and joining their team, we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers -- that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do." Sounds like a match made in heaven to us.

Sparrow for iPhone Adds POP Email Support

The gang over at Sparrow sent out a brief tweet this morning announcing version 1.3 of their Sparrow for iPhone app is now available. Although the release notes are perhaps the briefest ever, the update adds one feature fans have been clamoring for, and that's support for POP email accounts. We're not quite sure who's still longing for POP email in this day and age, but always good to see that a developer delivers what the users want. The 1.3 update also squashes a bug related to folder mapping just ahead of the company's plans for an iPad edition of Sparrow they've been teasing recently. Sparrow for iPhone 1.3 is $2.99 from the App Store and a free update for existing users; the app is compatible with all devices running iOS 5.0 or later.

Arbor Aims for Expansion

- Alert) for one uses Peakflow to power its cloud services. It also uses the Pravail enterprise solution, which businesses deploy in front of services to stop application-layer attacks and disrupt botnet communications. Behind all Arbor products is ATLAS, the company’s research and intelligence organization that does threat analysis; deploys probes on service provider networks to get a broad view of what’s happening; and designs products to address those attacks. ATLAS has been in existence for about five years, says Bienkowski, but Arbor Networks is in the midst of expanding that effort by adding new people, additional probes, and building consortiums to collaborate on threat analysis.

Amazon Outage Underscores Importance of Cloud Testing

Rackspace, said, “We wish our friends at AWS and all of their customers the best. Everyone suffers down-time and never at a good time.’”

In April of 2011, AWS suffered an outage in the same Northern Virginia data center that crippled a number of major websites, including Foursquare (News - Alert), Reddit, Quora, Hootsuite and Moby, TechZone reported.

In a nearly 6,000-word document, Amazon detailed the widely scrutinized outage that began just after midnight on April 21. The overly technical explanation boils down to the fact that a human error began a chain of events that is sure to cost Amazon dearly.

The outage initially occurred in the Virginia data center when an erroneous network configuration change was performed during an upgrade to the primary network. Instead of shifting traffic to the other router on the primary network, the traffic was moved onto the lower capacity redundant EBS network. This caused many of the servers to get “stuck,” as Amazon put it.
