VEVO For iPad Updates With New Social Features

The appropriately described "Hulu for music videos" finally receives a redesign of its iPad app today. VEVO has just introduced some new features, including increased Facebook integration, iTunes compatibility, and even more ways to learn about your favorite artists.

The uber-alliance between three of the recoding industry's biggest labels -- Sony, Universal, and EMI -- originally premiered with its website back in 2009. The service provides free viewing of over 50,000 music videos from 11,000 different recording artists.

The VEVO iOS app originally launched for iPhone in 2010, with the iPad version debuting later. Version 2.0 of VEVO HD brings over some of the UI redesign features seen on the iPhone app last spring, as well integrating more enhanced social features.

If you're interested in discovering artists similar to your usual tastes, it's now possible to search videos by genre. After you've hung the band's poster on your wall -- that still happens, right? -- VEVO HD 2.0 will let you check out that artist's bio, tour dates, and twitter feed. Building and sharing playlists with friends is now easier, thanks to simple Facebook integration.

But the most interesting feature is iTunes video match. VEVO will cue up videos based on your iTunes music library, and with Airplay compatibility, that means it's entirely possible to sit on the couch watching videos of all your favorite artists. Kind of cool.

So, why did the update take so long to make its way to iPad? According to VEVO's senior VP of product and technology, Michael Cerda, the company wanted to test the waters before moving forward.

"Not because we didn't want to, but because we were interested in learning how you would use the new VEVO," wrote Cerda on the VEVO blog. "Frankly, we wanted to validate our new ideas, and have an opportunity to iterate upon them to build you the best music video experience iPad can offer."

Sounds kind of weird, but hey, VEVO is free.

Tuesday Recap: iOS 6 Features Return to 3GS, NOOK for Web, 1Password Retina

Doesn't it feel a little bit like the calm before the storm? We pretty much know that OS X Mountain Lion will be arriving on our favorite Mac computer next week unless Apple pulls a rabbit out of its hat later this week, and the tech world is enjoying a somewhat quiet lull otherwise. But that doesn't mean we can't scrounge up some worthy contenders for today's recap, so read on for everything happening this Tuesday, July 17, 2012.

iOS 6 Beta 3 Brings Shared Photo Streams, VIP Mail to iPhone 3GS

We already know that iOS 6 will be compatible with the iPhone 3GS, but Apple made it clear that certain features won't be invited to the party this fall -- among them are shared Photo Streams and Mail's VIP list as well as VIP and flagged mailboxes. Well, wouldn't you know it, Cupertino may be having a change of heart. MacRumors is reporting that iPhone 3GS users installing iOS 6 Beta 3 have discovered that these handy features do indeed work with the new developer-only update, and Apple has updated the iOS 6 preview page from their website to reflect the change.  After the June 11 announcement, that page contained eight footnotes regarding the iPhone 3GS, which has now been reduced to only six. You know what? We're guessing iPhone 3GS users are not gonna complain about that.

Barnes & Noble Introduces NOOK for Web with 6 Free Best Sellers

Although Barnes & Noble offers very fine Nook apps for iOS and other platforms, that doesn't help should you want to take in a few quick pages on your desktop computer. That's why the company announced today the availability of Nook for Web, which gives readers instant access to the e-reader platform from any Mac or PC browser with no sign-in, download or additional hardware required. And hey, even if you prefer to use your iPad, iPhone or other device, Barnes & Noble is enticing you to try the web version by offering six bestsellers absolutely free until July 26. Titles include The Vow, Sex and the City and a junior novelization of Pixar's Brave, and the good news is that these free purchases get synced to your NOOK app or device as well. Nook for Web doesn't yet support Mobile Safari, but iPad support is listed as "coming soon."

1Password for Mac Gains Retina Display Support

If you've rocking one of those swanky MacBook Pro with Retina Display models, the folks at AgileBits have some great news for you today. 1Password for Mac version 3.9.6 just hit the Mac App Store and adds support for all those luscious extra pixels, while also adding support for the Chrome Web Store version of the 1Password extension. Not a huge update, but certainly a welcome one for Retina Display fans everywhere.

German Court Says Motorola Xoom Doesn't Infringe on iPad Design

Fox Business is reporting that Apple has suffered another defeat in its efforts to get Motorola Mobility's Android-based products off the market. This time it's a ruling in Germany that claims the company's Xoom tablet doesn't infringe on three design patents related to the iPad, squashing any hope Cupertino might have had for getting the device banned throughout Europe. But it's not a total loss, since Motorola's claim against Apple has also been tossed, with the newly-owned Google manufacturer ordered to pay one-third of legal costs, while Apple must pick up the tab for the remaining two-thirds. But it's not over yet, since the German case was focused strictly on the actual hardware design -- Apple still has plenty of ammunition in its coffers where software is concerned that could drag this thing out for awhile.

Firefox 14 Brings Native Full-Screen for OS X Lion

Mozilla is back with another new build of its Firefox browser, and this time it's taking aim at security while beefing up tools for developers. According to The Mozilla Blog, Firefox 14 (actually 14.0.1) is now available for Mac, Windows and Linux, which adds support for HTTPS secure Google searches and a Pointer Lock API to allow web apps such as first-person games to better control the mouse. Last but not least, the Mac version finally plays nice with OS X Lion 10.7's full-screen mode, promising "a better experience with videos and web games like Mozilla's BrowserQuest." The latest version is now ready for download on the Mozilla website.

Intel ESSA Solution Guide Features Sanbolic Melio

- Alert) in association with autonomous hardware and software vendors, are available to resellers and direct Intel original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) through Intel ESAA. The latest guidelines on the application of Sanbolic Melio with Microsoft SQL 2008R2 will be extremely useful for Intel resellers, OEMs, Intermediate eXperimental Vehicles and the end users.

In a release, Rick Cecil, Intel ESAA Architect, Intel said, "We included Sanbolic's Melio data management software as a key component in the 'Sanbolic Melio and Microsoft SQL 2008R2 Guide' guide because its industry-unique features and functionality help users overcome the numerous challenges associated with SQL Server clustering while delivering enhanced storage performance and availability, as well as providing the ability to scale out, not just up."

Organizations often have to cope with expensive and composite ways of configuring, running and defending huge SQL Server deployments. These difficulties can now be tackled with the exceptional and widespread capabilities of Sanbolic's Melio data management platform.

Melio offers optimal storage utilization, easy database management, live storage/data migration, and quality of service, thereby offering an economically viable offering for SQL Server consolidation and ensuring high accessibility in physical, virtual and mixed environments.

Andy Melmed, Director, Enterprise Solutions, Sanbolic said, "Providing active-active access to storage eliminates the need for individual server/storage silos, thereby enhancing both server and storage utilization while reducing the management burden customers face when supporting clustered SQL Server environments. Cluster-wide data protection, granular performance management and the ability to scale deployments seamlessly offers organizations additional capabilities for protecting, managing and scaling their SQL Server environments. Sanbolic is delighted to have once again worked with Intel to develop another ESAA recipe. It is a seal of approval for which we are understandably proud."

Plex for iOS 2.4 Gains Social Features, Media Deletion

We love us some Plex here at MacLife.com, so every new update is a bit of a treat for us. If you love Plex and also love your friends, then you'll want to rush to the App Store to grab version 2.4 of the iOS app, which brings a new social angle to the media streamer.

The folks at Plex have announced a new Plex for iOS 2.4 over the weekend, and as usual it's loaded chock full of the good stuff users want in a media streaming app -- and a helping handful of juicy bug fixes as well.

At the top of this list are new social features. MyPlex users can now add friends to their account, then recommend media to each other or even post directly to your Facebook timeline. Simply head to your Account settings and jump into the new Friends tab to send invites -- and don't forget to link your MyPlex account with Facebook while you're at it.

The other new features may be smaller but are no less welcome, including the ability to clear cached images, launch the app via plexapp:// URL and even delete media right from within the app, assuming you're using Plex Media Server 0.9.6.1 or later.

Automatic video quality adjustment has now been restored to the app as well, which allows the app to select the most appropriate video quality for the currently available bandwidth -- up to a maximum rate which the user defines.

Plex for iOS 2.4 is now available from the App Store for $4.99 and the update is free for existing users; the universal app is compatible with all devices running iOS 4.1 or later.

Rumor: New 15-Inch MacBook Pro Features USB 3.0, Retina Display, Thin Design

Most of the recent rumors about a new MacBook Pro have been focused on it being as thin as a MacBook Air -- but that may be wishful thinking, according to trusted sources who are spilling the beans on the forthcoming 15-inch model.

9to5Mac has donned its tin hat again and filed an extensive report on what may be coming with this year’s 15-inch MacBook Pro. Those of you hoping for an ultra-thin design like the MacBook Air may be disappointed, but let’s face it: That was probably a pipe dream anyway.

Mindshare's New Call Center Training Software Features Instant Feedback Surveys

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Mindshare Technologies, specializing in call center training, announced the availability of their new automated callback service, Outbound Dial, for its call center and service industry customers.

Outbound Dial can also be used by clients gauging the quality of their customer interactions through a system that can’t be manipulated by agents.

Outbound Dial features a callback function that provides the administrator or supervisor with a quick, customized survey within three minutes of an interaction between an agent and customer. It gives the opportunity to rate specific aspects of the interaction and provide real-time feedback to call center management for training.

“Many call centers and service clients already use some sort of follow-up method that measures the performance of their agents, but our clients were looking for an easier, cost-effective option that would increase the quality of customer interactions,” Jon Grover, VP of product development at Mindshare, said in a statement.

Outbound Dial includes a scheduling component with time zone support, so agents can make follow-up calls at appropriate times. Follow-ups can be configured to occur immediately or in daily batches.

“We developed Outbound Dial with this in mind, and have included several features that simplify the process while optimizing outcomes,” Grover added. “And because the survey is managed by Mindshare rather than being done in-house, it really cuts down on the potential for fraudulent results.”

Surveys provided through Outbound Dial are available in different languages.

With this new call center training, Mindshare targets not only the call center and services clients, but other industries focused on building customer relationships. Outbound Dial is one of the many specialized VoC technologies Mindshare offers to its clients to transform customer feedback to improve operational efficiencies.

Mindshare recently announced it tripled the size of its text analytics team with the addition of product managers, developers and text analytics engineers. The Mindshare Text Analytics Suite is currently used by household name brands in the retail, restaurant and call center industries.
