MacTech, Southern Stars Using Social Media to Launch SkyCube Satellite Into Space

We all know that social media is a powerful force, but can it be used to launch a satellite into orbit? That's what MacTech magazine and Southern Stars are hoping as they seek donations to launch SkyCube into space next year.

MacTech and Southern Stars have jointly announced an ambitious project for "the world's first personal, interactive satellite mission" on Friday. Their goal is to use Kickstarter funding to get a satellite named SkyCube into space next year as part of a secondary payload on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

"We want to create a space exploration experience that everyone can be a part of," explains Tim DeBenedictis, founder of Southern Stars, a leading provider of mobile apps for amateur astronomers. "We are developing a nano-satellite, and mobile apps to go with it, as the focus for a global education and public outreach campaign."

The tiny SkyCube will allow people all over the world to participate in next year's launch by tweeting messages and even obtaining pictures of Earth from space. The satellite will also broadcast simple messages uploaded by sponsors including MacTech, who is the first corporate backer of the project.

"What attracted MacTech to support SkyCube was the prospect that anyone could be involved," said Neil Ticktin, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech magazine. "MacTech has always been about bringing the community together, and SkyCube demonstrates the best of this. At MacTech Conference (October 17-19, 2012 in Los Angeles), we'll be doing some fun stuff around this project and giving the Apple technical community a great opportunity to be a part of history."

The SkyCube mobile app will be available for iOS via the App Store, with an Android version also available on Google Play; amateur astronomers can also tune in from any web browser. A basic sponsorship to participate in the mission is only $1, which allows the sponsor to tweet a single message into space.

For more information, visit the Kickstarter page to check out the variety of packages Southern Stars and MacTech have lined up for the event.

Avaya Offers Insight on Social Media in the Contact Center

- Alert), Facetime, and the like, folks knew video as TV – almost always continuous, with a great picture, transmitted from a full studio setup.  After years of video calls on webcams with family, friends, etc., they now know that Internet video can be useful, but there can be issues – just like with cell phones. This means that businesses can now comfortably make the decision to deploy video, knowing customer expectations are realistic.

What new tools and practices are businesses using to better leverage their own and/or outside data to target, engage, and deliver to the customer?

On one hand businesses must understand their customers’ needs and experiences, and on the other they also must understand the strengths and weaknesses of their business processes. Analytics must be multi-faceted in order to make constant improvements on both sides in order to remain competitive. One of the key areas is in agent quality monitoring and WFM. Speech analytics is now very practical, possible, and ready to help businesses monitor their conversations. Avaya’s purchase of Aurix (News - Alert) last October is an example of how we see this technology becoming mainstream, especially when incorporated by design into a contact center solution instead of being an optional add-on.

How is the mobile boom impacting how businesses target, engage, and deliver to the customer?

Very few people think to themselves, “I’d like to buy something, let me call around to see what companies have today.”  They start on the Web, and with mobile devices. Capturing that Web visit and turning it into a sale or, if needed, an agent-assisted transaction, is what successful companies are striving to accomplish. Anything less is not as competitive given the proliferation of the portable Internet.

Mobile devices and consumerization are also having tremendous impacts inside the contact center. Agents and supervisors are much more likely to be remote or mobile. Supervisors can manage on the move using their tablets, for example, as a source of real-time operational and analytics data. Subject matter experts can be brought into interactions wherever they may be and, probably most importantly, consumers are electing to interact with contact centers using their mobile devices in a variety of modes.

Beyond just Internet browsing, there is very often an app for that.  It is becoming an expectation that major corporations provide an app for consumer engagement – for example, with financial institutions or airlines.

The question now becomes how does a company turn that into an opportunity – let’s say if a customer cannot get his or her question answered via the native app? More and more companies are realizing the value of integrating that application directly into their contact center to provide the customer an opportunity to ask for more assistance in real-time, at the moment of need.

Plex for iOS 2.4 Gains Social Features, Media Deletion

We love us some Plex here at MacLife.com, so every new update is a bit of a treat for us. If you love Plex and also love your friends, then you'll want to rush to the App Store to grab version 2.4 of the iOS app, which brings a new social angle to the media streamer.

The folks at Plex have announced a new Plex for iOS 2.4 over the weekend, and as usual it's loaded chock full of the good stuff users want in a media streaming app -- and a helping handful of juicy bug fixes as well.

At the top of this list are new social features. MyPlex users can now add friends to their account, then recommend media to each other or even post directly to your Facebook timeline. Simply head to your Account settings and jump into the new Friends tab to send invites -- and don't forget to link your MyPlex account with Facebook while you're at it.

The other new features may be smaller but are no less welcome, including the ability to clear cached images, launch the app via plexapp:// URL and even delete media right from within the app, assuming you're using Plex Media Server 0.9.6.1 or later.

Automatic video quality adjustment has now been restored to the app as well, which allows the app to select the most appropriate video quality for the currently available bandwidth -- up to a maximum rate which the user defines.

Plex for iOS 2.4 is now available from the App Store for $4.99 and the update is free for existing users; the universal app is compatible with all devices running iOS 4.1 or later.

- Alert), said, "The SMP8672 provides the level of performance that OEMs need for building today's 3D-enabled media devices and IPTV hybrid systems. Featuring a high performance CPU, deep L2 cache, and powerful 3D accelerator, the SMP8672 significantly boosts HTML5 and JavaScript benchmarks that reflect the expected user experience with a growing list of OTT applications. The recently introduced software development kit, or SDK, from Sigma is also compatible with the SMP8672 product series. Keep your iPad Media on a Wi-Fi Hard Drive to Save Room for Retina Apps

All this talk lately about how apps optimized for the iPad's Retina Display are taking up all the precious storage real estate reminded me to tell you there's actually a solution to all of this. While it might sound inconvenient to store your media on a separate device, it might be time to consider it so that you don't have to forfeit downloading new apps to make room for media. Many manufacturers now offer Wi-Fi-enabled hard drives that stream to your iOS device, and it's worth the additional cost if you use your iPad primarily as an entertainment portal.

Our favorite Wi-Fi hard drive so far is the Seagate GoFlex Satellite, which offers 500GB of storage for your media, music, and documents. It's easier to simply transfer over data to the hard drive rather than waiting for iTunes to convert and import everything, and all you need to do is download the GoFlex media app for it to work. The GoFlex satellite also works with up to three devices at time. Seagate has also updated the firmware on the hard drive to allow users to simultaneously surf the web and stream to the iPad.

If you're looking for something more compact, the Kingston Wi-Drive offers up to 32GB of of flash storage and is only a third of the size of the GoFlex Satellite. Like Seagate's offering, the Wi-Drive streams to your iOS device via a free app, and also lets you surf the web as you're streaming to the iPad.

Or, if your iPad stays at home most of the time, you could consider getting a Buffalo Cloudstor or some other kind of personal cloud device and accessing your media that way. Regardless, don't let your iPad's limited storage space get in the way of enjoying its remarkable capabilities.

Shares Double in Millennial Media IPO

By Patrick Lambert, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Millennial Media (News - Alert), a mobile advertising company, which recently debuted on the stock market last Thursday, saw an large rise in its stock price. These shares were hot commodities and went way up at more than double its initial price.

This follows the earlier LinkedIn (News - Alert) IPO where shares closed at 109 percent up on the first day of trading. The stock symbol for Millennial Media is MM and is now trading on the New York Stock Exchange. They are one of four companies going public this past Thursday and 10 overall this week.

The state of the IPO market has not been very encouraging in the past couple of years, especially with technology companies. Many preferred to stay privately owned rather than go through all the requirements of filing an IPO. However with high profile debuts like LinkedIn, the soon to be Facebook (News - Alert), and now Millennial Media, it's clear that investors are eager to get into the tech sector again.

The fast growing demand for smartphones and tablets is clearly one of the factors behind the popularity of mobile ads such as the ones provided by Millennial Media. As the market itself grows, so does the company's potential market. It's a very positive situation which hasn't escaped the stock investors who flocked to buy these early stocks.

The Baltimore company raised $132.6 million in initial capital with the offering of 10.2 million shares on Wednesday night. Shares ended up priced at $13 each, up from an earlier estimate of $9 to $11. The money gathered by this initial offering will be used by Millennial to pay for general corporate purposes like expanding around the globe, and develop new products. Its revenue so far is $103.7 million over the past year, although it's not making a profit quite yet, losing $5.3 million so far this year. By the end of the open market day on Thursday, the shares finished at $25.20 each.

It's hard to predict growth in such a fast changing market, but the mobile ads sector is said to be one of the most interesting field currently. There are billions of people around the globe who are going to use a phone as their first computing device, and tailoring content for them will be a very profitable business proposition. Millennial Media is one of many companies hoping to cash in with this fast growing market.

Most Effective Marketing: Combining Social Media and Email Campaigns

By Rachel Ramsey, TMCnet Contributor

Companies seem to think they have two choices when choosing marketing campaigns: through email or social media.

Email marketing campaigns continue to be a popular form of marketing. Forrester Research released a report revealing that consumers will receive more than 9,000 email-marketing messages annually., and the spending on email marketing in the U.S. will reach $2 billion by 2014.

Social media offers a wide variety of platforms including Facebook business pages, Twitter (News - Alert), and daily deals to reach a wider audience.

Combining the two, however, allows companies to reach a greater number of interested parties while spending the same amount of time on marketing. A recent article by NBC 5 gave tips to combine and keep track of social media and email marketing campaigns for the most effective outcome.

Keep email and social media efforts together by adding “share” buttons, and pair an email newsletter with a Tweet or Facebook (News - Alert) status message with the same content. A great way to keep your message and content forwarding on is to encourage existing customers and followers to spread the word about your company. Some companies may offer a deal or reward for existing customers who refer new clients.

Covering as many platforms as you can throughout the campaign is the best way to reach as many people as possible. It’s possible to automate messages so they simultaneously appear in Twitter, LinkedIn (News - Alert) and Facebook without having to go to each individual page.

VerticalResponse examined the effectiveness of the combination of email and social media marketing. Organizations that use its email marketing service and also engage in social media marketing for their business report a 28 percent higher open rate on their email marketing campaigns compared to those that don’t.

The data analysis indicates that non-profits, real estate, marketing and advertising, Internet, and health and wellness are the top five industries that use both email marketing and social media.

Plex Introduces New Media Server Beta with PS3, Xbox DLNA Support

We love us some Plex here at MacLife.com, where we’ve converted an aging Mac mini into a fine home theatre server with a minimum of effort. Now that recent versions of the Plex application have separated the server software from the client software, all sorts of goodies have been coming -- such as DLNA streaming support with a new server update this week.

The wizards at Plex have announced a new Plex Media Center 0.9.6.0 beta release on Thursday which adds support for the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) streaming standard. While that may not sound so exciting in and of itself, DLNA brings a variety of new options for Plex lovers, including streaming to many HDTVs, Blu-ray players and game consoles such as the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
