Eddy Cue Introduces Changes to iTunes, All-New Version Coming in October

If a new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 aren't enough to get you excited about Apple's media event in San Francisco on Wednesday, the company has even more in store with changes to iTunes and the iPod.

Following the introduction of the iPhone 5 with iOS 6, Apple CEO Tim Cook invited senior VP Eddy Cue to the stage to talk about iTunes, which the company is making some big changes to.

With the iTunes Store now available in 63 countries worldwide, Cue unveiled a new design for the iOS version of the store, which runs across all categories offered. Facebook "likes" are now integrated into every product offering, and users can preview songs while browsing -- all included with iOS 6 when it launches on September 19.

Cue notes that 200 million customers are now enjoying iTunes in the Cloud, which is why Apple today introduces a new version of iTunes coming in October, with a new edge-to-edge design that marks the first major departure from the classic design we all know and love.

New features include a drop down menu in the currently playing field, which allows users to see upcoming songs no matter where they are inside the app. A new mini-player design is also on deck, allowing users to manage playlists and upcoming songs. iCloud is now built right into iTunes, which offers a cleaner, easier to navigate look.

Unfortunately, we'll all have to wait a bit to see the new iTunes, which Cue announced as available in October.

Nokia has announced the next phase of its Windows Phone strategy during a media event held jointly with Microsoft on Wednesday morning in New York City. Following a recap by CEO Stephen Elop, Nokia vice president Jo Harlow took the stage to kick off the day's announcements.

Path 2.5 Introduces Larger Photos, More Sharing Options

With its privacy gaffe earlier this year squarely behind them, the folks at Path are forging ahead with new features to make sharing with loved ones better than ever. Bigger photos, movie and book sharing and more are all on deck in Path 2.5.

Path has released version 2.5 for both iOS and Android, and despite some recent service slowdowns due to explosive growth for the app, the focus with this version is all about speed and enhancements to existing features.

Path 2.5 finally allows users to snap photos using the iPhone's volume button, just like the built-in Camera app. Likewise, a single tap on the photo screen will kick off a video recording. Your photos will look better than ever thanks to the update taking full advantage of the screen real estate of your device, and new filters round out the photographic goodies in this version.

But it doesn't stop there: In addition to sharing music, Path users can now tag movies or books from the same place, so your friends can be envious when you're watching the latest hot movie or reading a new best-seller.

Path has also introduced a Nudge feature -- similar to Facebook's Poke, Nudge is aimed at encouraging your friends and family to post more frequently or even suggest others to connect with.

"And invitations on Path are even more personal," the service notes on its blog. "You can record and send a voice message: 'Join Path, mama!' 'Start sharing with me cuz’!' You get the idea. We’ll let you put your own spin on it."

Finally, Path 2.5 makes it easier than ever to get started for new users. As always, the free app is available for iOS in the App Store and also Google Play for Android lovers.

Google Introduces Nexus 7 Tablet, Starting at $199 for 8GB (Updated)

Google I/O kicked off with a keynote address Wednesday morning in San Francisco, and following the introduction of Android 4.1 "Jellybean" and Google Play updates, the search giant announced its own branded tablet, the Nexus 7.

Google took a bold leap into hardware manufacturing on Wednesday morning with the Nexus 7, the search giant's own stab at a seven-inch Android tablet which promises to go head-to-head with Apple's iPad.

Built in conjunction with Asus, the Nexus 7 features a 1280x800 HD IPS display with a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, 1GB RAM and 4325mAh battery. The seven-inch tablet is powered by a Tegra 3 processor running Android 4.1 "Jellybean," Google's latest operating system update revealed at the I/O keynote.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC all come standard with the Nexus 7, which is capable of playing back nine hours of HD video and 300 hours in standby. Google Play is at the front and center of the Nexus 7, with all of your cloud-based content synced to a user's Google account.

Available in an 8GB model for a Kindle Fire-busting price of $199 or a 16GB model for only $249, Nexus 7 fans can also order a $19.99 cover for the device -- although the device is only available for residents in the U.S., U.K. and Canada at this time.

We managed to order an 8GB model for $199 before the keynote even started, although the tablet will arrive in mid-July. Purchases made from the Play Store include a $25 credit for content from Google Play as well as a free movie (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) and a selection of free magazine titles.

Android 4.1 "Jellybean" includes a number of notable features including better home screen arrangement, the new "Project Butter" for improving frame rates and improved search, which now includes Google Now for using a device's search history, calendar and other apps to help find information. Android 4.1 will be available as an over-the-air update on Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S smartphones as well as the Motorola Xoom tablet in mid-July.
