Dell SonicWall Leverages Power of Dell to Deliver Next Generation Network Security Solutions

270">

Ayrapetov was quick to mention that Sonicwall acquisition was completed few months ago. And it is now expanding with next generation firewalls, as well as developing new. However, to make this acquisition successful, the challenge is now to educate Dell’s large sales force about these new products, said Ayrapetov. Plus, he added, Dell’s large base of partners were also being educated and trained about SonicWall products.

Meanwhile, in last couple of months Dell SonicWall next-generation firewalls have earned high recognition from three of the industry’s most influential third-party evaluators. According to the maker, it provides independent validation for IT administrators who are looking for the best performing security solutions for their modern corporate network and deployment scenarios. In the NSS Labs 2012 Security Value Map (SVM) for Next-Generation Firewalls, the Dell SonicWall SuperMassive E10800 was rated as the highest overall protection next-generation firewall. The developer said that the E10800 was also the winner of Network World’s (News - Alert) 2012 next-generation firewall Clear Choice Performance test, leading the way in application detection and decrypting SSL traffic at up to 4.9 Gbps.

Similarly, in July, ICSA Labs also tested the Dell SonicWALL (News

Newer MacBook Airs Receive Power Nap Update, Retina MacBook Coming Soon

After releasing OS X Mountain Lion and a slew of supporting application updates on Wednesday, you'd think Apple would have taken a break -- but instead, new MacBook Air owners received a firmware update to enable the new Power Nap feature.

Apple posted a support document which details the Power Nap feature of OS X Mountain Lion, noting "an SMC update is required to gain all the functionality" with this hot new feature. For now, there are only three MacBook models supported -- and for one of them, the feature is still MIA.

The mid-2011 and mid-2012 MacBook Air models received the required SMC update on Wednesday night, so users who have updated to OS X Mountain Lion can begin taking advantage of the operating system's stealth-like features, even while the notebook is asleep.

So what gets done while a notebook is Power Napping? Ironically, almost everything. The support document details an extensive list that at first glance might have you believing the Mac isn't going to sleep at all, which includes receiving new messages in Mail, new invites or calendar updates in Calendar, changes made elsewhere in Contacts, Reminders or Notes and even Photo Stream updates.

Apple claims that Power Nap is even more impressive while your Mac notebook is plugged into AC power, where it's also capable of downloading software updates, making backups via Time Machine, performing Spotlight indexing and even updating Help Center.

About the only bad news in this support document is that the swanky new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display has no required SMC update available -- at least not yet. It's still listed as "coming soon," but given how busy Apple has been this week, we can probably forgive them for being tardy on this one thing.

J.D. Power Calls Cadillac A Champion Of Customer Service

By Steve Anderson, Contributing TMCnet Writer

It's been said that a top-notch customer service experience is the key to not only getting new customers, but keeping the old ones. J.D. Power and Associates has recently designated Cadillac as a 2012 Customer Service Champion.

J.D. Power and Associates' Customer Service Champion program takes the opinions of consumers, as relates to 800 different brands across 20 industries, focusing on five key areas: People, Price, Process, Presentation, and finally, Product. It then distilled those customer opinions in those five key metrics down into just 50 brands that were worthy of J.D. Power and Associates' Customer Service Champion ranking. Of the 50 brands that made it into the rankings, only four car brands managed to earn the designation.

Cadillac has earned the designation two years running, thanks to what they describe as a customer-centered approach, using its customer base to affect design processes. Cadillac's XTS sedan, for instance, draws heavily on customer research to provide features like ample trunk space and high-end communications systems and media services. Cadillac also leans toward providing extra face time to customers at the dealership level, a tactic in increasingly short supply with the advent of online shopping, where the potential customer has no face time at all with a vendor.

An old marketing adage declares that customers will tell, on average, ten people about every bad experience they have while far fewer will be told about a good experience. While this adage is often debated by most who hear it, including some who like to introduce the modifier effect social media introduces, the key point is that the customer experience is still a primary driver of a business' fortunes, no matter what size it is.

A designation like J.D. Power and Associates' Customer Service Champion is an important one to have, and visible proof that an organization like Cadillac is doing all it can to ensure the best experience for customers possible.

Minuteman Offers Instant Rebates: Get Your Power Protection Units While They Are Hot!

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

If you’ve been holding out on purchasing your next power protection unit – secretly hoping that you can hold out until December when Santa can bring you a nice big stocking stuffer instead – think again because all through April Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert) is offering instant rebates on some of its most valued products.

Starting now, Minuteman –a provider of power protection units – is promoting instant rebates on its best mission critical UPSs including the EnterprisePlus and Endeavor Series UPSs.

“We chose to feature the EnterprisePlus and Endeavor Series because we feel that these units provide a tremendous combination of features and value not typically found in these higher levels of UPSs,” Duston Nixon, marketing communications specialist for Minuteman, told TMCnet. “These units are ideal for mission-critical applications, and we want to help show that this doesn’t have to mean breaking the budget to have ample power protection.”

The Endeavor Series, a true on-line rack/wall/tower UPSs for sensitive electronic equipment and critical servers, network devices, and phone systems, boasts double-conversion, true since wave output, and zero transfer time for mission critical apps. The power protection unit combines its double-conversion technology with extended runtime capability in a versatile case design, according to company officials. It comes with a three-year warranty and five-year extended warranty.

Minuteman’s EnterprisePlus Series, also eligible for an instant rebate, is a line interactive sine wave rack/wall/tower UPS for sensitive electronic equipment and critical servers, network devices, and phone systems. It offers true sine wave output and versatile configuration options for a full range of applications, officials said. It also boasts automatic voltage regulation, extended runtime, and three- and five-year warranties.

Instant rebates are available on both products through April 30.

While everyone from retail stores to IT departments to education institutions might be lining up to purchase Minuteman’s power protection units, the two products eligible for instant rebates have typically found a sweet spot with the small and medium-sized business, according to Nixon.

“Like the rest of our product line, the EnterprisePlus and Endeavor Series UPSs are perfectly suited for small to medium-sized businesses and organizations such as schools and hospitals,” Nixon said. “Administrators in these facilities must face tight budgets, and often make sacrifices in certain areas to meet those demands. Our products allow them to get the features and protection they want without compromising in other areas to get them.”

Bi-PON Technology Cuts Ten Times Normal Fiber-to-the-Home Power Consumption

By Jacqueline Lee
Contributing Writer

Imagine a new data processing protocol that improves power consumption of information and communications networks so much that the power saved is the equivalent of taking half a million cars off of the road. No, this isn’t science fiction or a farfetched ‘go green’ initiative. This is a new technology – called Bi-PON, just announced by the GreenTouch Consortium.

Analysts expect fiber-in-the-home to grow to over 142 million subscribers over the next five years, nearly double the current number. Within optical network units (ONU), current energy consumption is increasing dramatically with network speed. By simplifying circuitry and making data flow more efficient, Bi-PON cuts power from an average of two watts to 200 microwatts.

The process is energy-intensive, with up to 99 percent of data dropped, as it is intended for other ONUs on the PON.

With Bi-PON, every ONU still receives every bit of data. But the ONU can determine which bits are intended for different ONUs, and can drop them before the bits undergo heavy, energy-intensive processing. This change results in the tenfold reduction in power consumption.

Power consumption is now proportional to the number of bits the user consumes, instead of the full incoming PON line rate. Because the data flowing in processing blocks matches the outgoing rate, required buffer memory is eliminated or significantly reduced. This “just-in-time” data processing causes an additional reduction in power consumption.

GreenTouch will showcase the new technology in a live webinar, concurrently available as a podcast.

“Implementing Bi-PON over current technologies will have the energy savings equivalent to the carbon impact of permanently taking all the cars in a city like San Francisco off the road,” said Gee Rittenhouse, chairman of GreenTouch. “We are making great progress toward our goal and are planning to make advances like this across all of our 25 research projects that are currently underway.”

GreenTouch is a consortium, dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of information and communications technology networks by a factor of 1,000. Bit-Interleaved Passive Optical Network is the second major new technology released by the consortium en route to its goal.
