TMCnet VoIP Routers Week in Review

- Alert) International acquired Ascade, an independent Swedish software company. By combining Ascade’s flagship trading and routing solution, Ascade7, with CSG’s Wholesale Business Management Solution, the company hopes to firmly establish a global leadership position.

“Our acquisition of Ascade will help us continue to deliver market-leading solutions that help our clients operate nimbly and efficiently," said Peter Kalan, president and chief executive officer at CSG International. "Our combined offering and global presence ensures that operators of all types – fixed, mobile, wholesale, broadband, MVNOs and ISPs – have a partner in CSG with the breadth of functionality and flexibility in delivery models to meet their current and evolving wholesale needs."

Also this week, Virtual PBX (News - Alert) announced new business VoIP packages. They feature costs reduced by up to 70 percent with the option to pay for a full year of service up front for furthered reduced pricing.

"Our new packages eliminate many of the concerns and risks related to deploying a high-quality business VoIP system," said Paul Hammond, CEO and president at Virtual PBX. "We're confident that these new plans deliver the highest value available today."

The National Airspace System received operational VoIP radio control capability this week from Harris Corporation. The system is now operating at the Federal Aviation Administration's Houston control center. Liberty RCE was selected by the FAA to overcome issues caused by the older RCE system installed at the facility.

"Liberty RCE’s flexibility enabled us to solve a technical issue that was encumbering our customer and reflects our continued commitment to providing the FAA with innovative solutions for their unique challenges,” said John O’Sullivan, VP of Mission Critical Networks at Harris Government Communications Systems.

Lastly, Ovum (News - Alert) recently released a report stating that the global market for Service Provider Switching and Routing (SPSR), which saw little growth during Q1, improved significantly in Q2. Furthermore, the industry should see even more substantial growth before the year's end.

Essentially, the gains made in the second quarter of this year should carry through to the rest of the year for a total growth of 4.4 percent or $15.4 billion. The flat growth seen in the first quarter was largely caused by different regions balancing each other out – for example, while North America's 13 percent growth was bogged down by Asia-Pacific's 0.7-percent loss.

Belkin Taps Airgain for Embedded Antennas in Newest Routers

Gigabit Routers, which are set to release this summer. The antennas are part of a development program that's been ongoing since 2004, which in turn gives them a whole series of proprietary methods and measurement tools that make Airgain antennas impressive pieces of hardware, and impart better overall wireless performance for those devices that use the antennas. In fact, previous Belkin models have also incorporated Airgain antennas, at last report, including the N150, N300, N600 and N900 series routers.

Belkin's Senior Director of Networking, Mike Chen, described the reasoning behind going with Airgain, saying “This provides improved speed and coverage over previous generation 802.11n devices, and enhances the online streaming experience for videos, movies, and music throughout the home. Leveraging Airgain’s embedded antenna technology and integration approach, our new 802.11ac router will allow consumers to enjoy the full capabilities of this new technology.”

In turn, Airgain's President and CEO, Charles Myers, explained Airgain's connection with Belkin by saying “We pride ourselves on being the only antenna vendor in the market today that designs throughput focused antenna solutions, and we are excited to be working with Belkin to deliver maximum performance antenna solutions for its market-leading home networking products.”

With the demand for bandwidth steadily growing thanks to a variety of online-only products, from text to video to gaming, it's not surprising that the hardware necessary to get the bandwidth to the devices that use it is also both increasing and improving. Belkin hardware has a long history of quality, and seeing Airgain take part in that history is a welcome development indeed. It will of course be interesting to see what Belkin and Airgain follow these developments up with, but in the short term, the Belkin and Airgain coalition should be a solid boost to the fortunes of online gamers, online video watchers, or just anyone who enjoys a solid Internet connection without needing to be tethered by a cable to a device.

Alcatel-Lucent to the Core - New IP/MPLS Routers Make Internet's Heart Future Ready

- Alert) Manager (SAM) platform and an Optical Extension Shelf capability that integrates the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) with the 7950 XRS.

A final major point of differentiation being touted is the future readiness and durability of the 7950 XRS. ALU says that every component of the platform design is modular, from power to cooling to all active components, making the system simple to maintain and upgrade. As to extensibility, ALU says, “The 7950 XRS backplane and optical interconnect are designed to handle slot capacities of 2 Terabits per second, multi-chassis clustering that enables the system to scale up to 240 Terabits per second in the future, as well as support 400GE and 1 Terabit interfaces as they become available.”

Industry validation

In an unusual for such announcements twist, the 7950 XRS family has gotten the public endorsement of Verizon, NTT Communications and BT (News - Alert). As someone with over 35 years of industry experience who has been a part of or evaluated thousands of product launches, I can say that public carrier endorsements of vendor solutions are about as rare as the appearance of Halley’s Comet.

The press release for the launch has the full comments of the above mentioned customers who have been kicking the tires of the 7950 XRS. Below is an abbreviated sample of their statements:

Ihab Tarazi, vice president of Global IP and Transport Planning and Technology, Verizon: “We applaud Alcatel-Lucent for its bold approach to router value and performance.” Fumio Ito, vice president Network Services Technology of NTT Communications (News - Alert): “We are pleased to see innovation from Alcatel-Lucent that brings enhancements to the IP network in terms that might be able to address our operational challenges and costs.” Karl Penaluna, president, BT Global Networks and Systems: “We’ve been using Alcatel-Lucent’s 7750 Service Router for many years as part of the rollout of the 21CN program across the UK...We’ll need platforms for our national and metro core networks that scale to 100Gigabit links and beyond. We’re also constantly seeking to reduce our physical footprint and power per bit, so we’re very encouraged to see Alcatel-Lucent meeting these challenges…”

Leading researchers agree with this being an important milestone.  An example is the comments from  Michael Howard, Principal Analyst & Co-Founder, Infonetics Research (News - Alert), who stated, "Service providers face a serious problem as they tackle 100G, the next great inflection point in their routing, switching and optical networks...Alcatel-Lucent’s new 7950 XRS core router platform appears to address the scaling of core networks without growing both soft and hard operating costs.”

A non-trivial pursuit

The 7950 XRS family of routers are part of Alcatel-Lucent’s vision of the High Leverage Network™ (HLN) which is focused on addressing the exploding demand for broadband capacity and services in a way that eases service providers’ pain and positions them to maximize their opportunities in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. In the context of the HLN vision, the 7950 XRS family is as advertised, a significant milestone not just for ALU but for its competitors and customers as well.

What is being launched, given all of the design criteria for ease of operation, reliability, extensibility, security, and price/performance, can be appreciated for the degree of difficulty involved. Over $3 billion in start-up funding over the past decade did not produce a viable alternative to the existing dominant suppliers.   And, as mentioned, it took ALU’s marshalling of all its resources in chipset design, operating systems, IP routing, optical transport, network management, etc., on a team, which has been together for years, to produce not just a single solution but a family that breaks new ground on a variety of fronts.

As I stated at the top, I am very skeptical of announcements positioned as being industry game-changers. However, not just me but key customers and analysts seem to agree the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 XRS is something new and important. In fact, check out the following links for more detailed information and judge for yourself.

TMCNet VoIP Routers Week in Review

- Alert), who brought Intrinsic-ID's Hardware Intrinsic Security—HIS--technology into their line of products. The addition of HIS technology into Dialog Semiconductor's systems will help improve security against a variety of potential problems like counterfeiting and cloning, and in an era of increasing use of mobile payments, cloud storage and the like, security is more important than ever. The HIS technology will allow for improved anti-virus protection by way of a digital fingerprint that in turn provides a message authentication tag (News - Alert) for bootloaders.

Kolmisoft stepped in with the next bit of news, offering their new MOR 12 software, an improved version of VoIP Class 4/5 Softswitch. The improved MOR 12 provides more options over earlier VoIP switches, and gives businesses a better billing platform as well as a more advanced softswitch. With an SIP Proxy server in play, the MOR 12 can allow for serving up to 10,000 calls simultaneously. It's scalable, allowing for further improvements as needed, and is said to be a very reliable product in the market.

Next, Telcentris (News - Alert) stepped in with news that its white label VoIP program was going to be changing in terms of its structure and pricing. It offered three separate pricing plans previously, but now, the white label VoIP program will come in just one package, but with metered options and bundling options to allow for more services to be offered in the confines of the single service. Some of the new services include a redesigned end-user portal, a redesigned administrator portal, and more call control functions. Better still; the new pricing structure requires less in start-up fees by 50 percent or more over previous versions, allowing new users to get in for less cost.

Lastly, we brought you a how-to guide for getting that new IP-PBX system installed and in play. Such an installation offers some serious potential benefits for the buyer, including increased system functions and better efficiencies delivered at a cost savings over current phone systems. And for those interested in an IP-PBX system already but not quite prepared to pull the trigger, Patton Electronics will be hosting a webinar called “Complete Turn-Key IP-PBX Solutions” at no charge to provide more information about the benefits of such a system.

It was another big week for VoIP routers, and our global online community is constantly keeping watch for news in the market space to keep you well informed about the newest products, activities, and all the other great news in the space. So until next week, keep it right here, and be sure to hit the Week in Review every Friday to catch up on what you missed!
