Lightning to USB Cable Sells Out, Apple Confirms No Freebies with iPhone 5

What sells out even faster than the new iPhone 5? Apparently, the new Lightning dock connector adapters, which are now showing a two-to-three week shipping delay as Apple confirms that new handset owners won't be getting a freebie.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple's new Lightning to USB Cable, which sells for $19, has sold out within a half an hour of the iPhone 5 preorders lighting up on the company's online store.

While the $29 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter and the $39 Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) won't ship until next month, the cheaper Lightning to USB Cable has been mostly available since Wednesday's big announcement, but no more.

Meanwhile, The Next Web published a report earlier this morning claiming that Apple was including a free Lightning to 30-pin Adapter with each iPhone 5. Apple's online store even offered the option to buy an "additional" Lightning to 30-pin Adapter, but this appears to be in error.

"Following the publishing on this article, TNW reader Ryan Moores reached out to share clarification he received from one of Apple’s online sales representatives," the updated report reads. "According to the representative, it is 'an error' and it is 'being investigated at the moment.'"

Bummer, but at least we'll still get those swanky new EarPods as part of the package, right? Right?

Thursday Recap: CEO Chats, Adobe Retina Display Updates, Kindle Fire Sells Out

With a week to go before Amazon holds a media event, the e-tailer has announced its best-selling Kindle Fire is now sold out -- which certainly sounds more like "we stopped making them because a new model is coming" to us. While that seven-inch slate was quite nice a year ago, Google's Nexus 7 has pretty much made many of us forget all about the Kindle Fire, so Amazon is going to have to pull a real rabbit out of its hat to wow us once again. In the meantime, let's get caught up with the day's news for this Thursday, August 30, 2012.

Report: Google, Apple CEOs Holding Patent Talks

Reuters is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page have been holding a series of "behind-the-scenes conversations about a range of intellectual property matters." According to sources in their inner circle, the two executive spoke by phone last week, presumably ahead of Friday's courtroom defeat for Google partner Samsung. Another source claims a new meeting was scheduled for this Friday but "delayed for reason that were unclear," but additional meetings will be held in the coming weeks. The move would certainly fit with Cook's own comments about wanting to settle patent issues outside of the courtroom, but we're a bit skeptical any such talks are actually taking place.

Adobe: Retina Support Coming This Fall for Key Creative Suite 6 Apps

There are still plenty of Mac apps yet to be updated for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display's high-resolution screen, and Adobe's Creative Suite 6 is definitely among them. But that will be changing this fall, as the company has officially announced Retina Display (i.e., HiDPI) support will be arriving in the next few months for a number of the company's key Creative Suite 6 and Creative Cloud software. The free updates will include Dreamweaver, Edge Animate, Illustrator, Lightroom, Photoshop Touch for iPad, Prelude, Premiere Pro, SpeedGrade and yes, Photoshop, which was demoed during the introduction of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display back in June. According to the company's Photoshop.com Blog, Photoshop Elements "will not fully support HiDPI displays in the immediate future," but the team is hard at work determining what they need to do to make that happen.

Kindle Fire Now Sold Out, We Really Can't Imagine Why

Amazon issued a press release this morning to boast about selling out of the Kindle Fire, its number one best-selling product ever. Claiming the seven-inch tablet has already captured 22 percent of the U.S. tablet market, the news seems curiously timed considering the e-tailer is holding a media event next Thursday, which seems quite certain to debut a new Kindle Fire (and maybe a few other surprises). "Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead," CEO Jeff Bezos says. "We will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem.

Wednesday Recap: WWDC Sells Out in 2 Hours, Sprint Unlimited, SkyDrive APIs

Could Apple be getting kickbacks from travel agents? It might appear so, given how the company announced ticket availability for WWDC 2012 in the wee hours of the morning today for West Coast developers, which pretty much ensures the event will be packed with plenty of out of towners come June 11. While you mull that conspiracy theory, let’s recap the news for this wonderful Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

Sprint Says Unlimited Data Will Remain, Even with 4G LTE iPhone

Cnet is reporting that Sprint has cemented its unlimited data pledge to customers, and that will even extend to 4G LTE, even if the next iPhone launches later this year with the faster data. While AT&T and Verizon continue to curtail their customers with capped data plans claiming the traffic could buckle their respective networks, Sprint is forging its own path -- at least until all that HD streaming grinds things to a halt. "I'm not anticipating the unlimited plan would change by that point," explains Sprint CEO Dan Hesse. "That's our distinctive differentiator." God bless you, sir -- here’s hoping you might get hired as CEO of one of the two bigger networks and carry the same gumption with you.

WWDC 2012 Sells Out in Under 2 Hours

Well, that was fast. Within two hours of our news post this morning announcing ticket availability for Apple’s 2012 Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco June 11-15, early bird developers snapped up every available ticket -- leaving none for those on the West Coast, who were likely sleeping when the announcement went live at 5:30am PST. The WWDC 2012 web page now says,

AOL Sells Patents to Microsoft and Facebook buys Instagram -a Look at Value

, that Facebook has had the wind in its face (pardon the pun) rather than at its back. Given the accelerating rate at which the “next big thing” pops up on the Internet (Pinterest and Instagram being prime examples), it is hard to imagine that changed circumstances won’t lead to similar moves.  Zuckerberg and his team are learning that with dominance comes envy, scrutiny and a lot more entities looking to knock you off your perch. They are used to an environment former New York Mayor Ed Koch used to describe as, “I don’t get ulcers, I give them!”

With everyone in the tech space seemingly in court with everyone else over intellectual property issues, hidden or not, there can be no question that IP is valuable. Just how much, to whom, for what reasons and at what time as the saying goes, “Is why they play the games.”

This leads to a final thought about value. As those who follow my musings on things related to the IP wars know, the 800 pound gorilla in all of this tends to be haggling over what constitutes FRAND (Fair, Reasonable and Nondiscriminatory) use of the IP of someone else. This is what regulation and litigation are mostly about setting aside emotion. It leads to a final question, who does one put a value on the moving target that is litigation?

Thanks, Rich, for getting the ball rolling.
