Apple CEO Tim Cook at D10: The Recap
The Wall Street Journal tech reporters Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher kicked off their annual D: All Things Digital conference on Tuesday night, and the first speaker in the hot seat was none other than Apple CEO Tim Cook, making his first appearance at the event in his new role.
Macworld’s Jason Snell was in attendance with a liveblog of the event and followed it up with an exhaustive transcription of the event in Tim Cook’s own words, which we’ve distilled into highlights here.
There was plenty of discussion about Steve Jobs, not surprising considering the late Apple co-founder spent his fair share of time in the All Things D hot seat over the years. Cook revealed

PhotoBeamer Mirrors your Camera Roll to the Big Screen
A couple days ago, we told you all about Facebook's rather weak photo-sharing app, Camera. But what if you're looking for a decidedly more local solution to share your pics? Scalado, a Swedish imaging company with its technology already available in over half-a-billion phone cameras, has just released it's first iOS app, PhotoBeamer. While you'll find no bells and whistles, it is quite possibly the easiest way to mirror image from your iOS device to a larger screen.
PhotoBeamer can display an image from your iOS device's camera roll on any display with a web browser. After choosing an initial photo, the app starts looking for a QR code. You'll find that code on the front page of Scalado's associated website. The image you initially selected quickly appears on the display and swiping through the Camera Roll changes the image in turn.
After playing with the app for a night, we found PhotoBeamer to work solidly. Latency between the iOS device and the browser-based image was almost non-existent and the interface is extremely simple to use from the outset.

9 Cool Vintage Apple Artifacts Once Available for Auction
The auction house Sotheby's is putting one of only six known working Apple-1 computers on the auction block next month. The very first Apple computer, the Apple-1 is where it all began. The computer consisted of a just a circuit board hand-built by Steve Wozniak in Steve Jobs' parents' garage. You had to get your geek on if you bought one and make your own case, add your own keyboard and monitor, and wire in your own power supply. Nonetheless, the Apple-1 went on sale in 1976 for $666.66. Wozniak and Jobs went on to produce about 200 units, but with this something insanely great was born.

Gartner: SAP Rules the Global CRM Software Market
The SAP Customer Relationship Management (SAP CRM) application enables companies to offer excellent customer experiences and maximize the effectiveness of every customer interaction across sales, marketing, service, finance, supply chain, logistics, manufacturing and human resources. It is the part of the SAP Business Suite. It helps you address your short-term imperatives – to reduce cost and increase your decision-making and likewise enable your company to get differentiated capabilities in order to compete effectively over the long term.
"We believe the report is a testament to our successful mission to help businesses run better, sell smarter, serve better and market on target," said Anthony Leaper (News - Alert), senior vice president and general manager, Line-of-Business Customer Solutions, SAP. "At the core of any game-changing strategy is the ability to provide customer experiences that matter. SAP leads the market with a suite of solutions that equip companies with the capabilities to deliver on their promises to their customers and change their game."
In a press release, Gartner report says, "Hot areas for CRM investment that have sparked increasing buying interest are mobility, social media and technologies, Web analytics and e-commerce." In the past year, SAP continued to help global enterprises enhance their customer experience management strategy by capitalizing on the use of innovative software solutions, including mobile, social and "big data."

KLIK by Face.com Review
Offering only nine pre-set filters, no digital zoom, and two flash options (fully on or off), KLIK by Face.com is by no means a great camera. But what this social media camera app does offer is facial recognition software that learns and grows smarter with every use. And while it lacks fancy editing options, it does the job it sets out to do with remarkable skill.
KLIK requires a link to your Facebook profile to even work; after all, where is it going to learn what your friends look like? Piggybacking on Facebook for recognition and Foursquare for geotagging, KLIK is very content-aware. The home screen of the camera highlights nearby users, shows you photos your friends are taking, holds your gallery of snaps, and gives you access to settings.
Fluff is at a minimum in camera mode. Tap the shutter button to take a snap or tap the import button to access your camera roll. An on-screen Learn button helps you teach the camera better recognition of your friends, giving you a short list of names with a recognition percentage likelihood. Tap a name and the camera begins to learn.
It sounds good in theory, but does it work? Ultimately, so much depends upon your photos. With good lighting and a straightforward shot, the app performs astonishing well. Make a goofy face in the dim light of a club and mis-tags are sure to happen. Luckily, you can correct this by tapping the tag and choosing from a list of friends to help the app learn from its mistakes. And KLIK isn't stymied by multiple people in your photos -- it performs admirably even with a stacked scene.
The bottom line. KLIK isn't a feature-rich camera, but it effectively executes its unique on-the-fly tagging approach -- and it's a very good student.

TMCnet Call Center Software Week in Review
If you use a predictive dialer for your outbound call center business, how certain are you that you're completely compliant with federal and state legislation? You may think that by buying the required lists and attempting to do some list scrubbing you're safe, but what if you accidentally call a mobile phone number? Or call a number that has been reassigned? Ignorance of the latter scenario is no longer a defense. Recently, in a case with potentially wide-ranging implications for compliance with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit found that a organization that places an automated call to a reassigned number without the prior express consent of the new recipient may be held liable for statutory damages, even if the previous subscriber with that number had consented to the automated calls.

Adobe Collage Review
It's a bit of a lost art, the collage. We have Facebook walls and Pinterest boards, but in the digital age, there aren't too many platforms that replicate the timeless practice of snipping words and photos and sticking them to a poster. With Collage, Adobe attempts to digitize the process for the iPad, but doesn't quite conjure the nostalgia I was hoping for.
It didn't take me long to master Collage's toolset, but that's not necessarily a compliment. While it's nice to fully learn the app in a few minutes, its ease of use has less to do with the intuitiveness of its interface than its overly limited features. It's easy to dive into Collage and certainly fun to use, but it doesn't really do anything that the desktop-caliber Photoshop Touch cannot, making its $9.99 price tag baffling.
Adobe Collage obviously revolves around photos, and Adobe has included several importing options, though copyright restrictions severely limit what's found from search tools like Google and Flickr. Photos can be rotated and resized with ease, and a nifty cut-out tool mimics the jagged impreciseness of cutting up a magazine. Video support is a nice touch, but the lack of Retina support for a premium app released after the new iPad's retail debut is a bummer.
Collage can import PSDX files (with support for layers, but not transparency) via Adobe's Creative Cloud subscription service, but its proprietary COLZ files can't be opened in Photoshop Touch for advanced editing. I was surprised Adobe didn't include any filters or unique brushes (maybe tape or pushpins) to compensate for its rudimentary toolset, and I would have liked to see more font options, -- especially one that makes it look like words should on a collage. Without these touches, finished collages look pretty one-dimensional.
The bottom line. Adobe's latest app for the iPad captures the essence of collaging, but it still isn't quite as satisfying as working with scissors and glue.

Polymer Review
Polymer's about as basic a puzzler as they come, requiring players to slide tiles into place to assemble large, amorphous shapes. The larger the shape, the more points are rewarded. Simple, right? But there's a catch: entire columns need to be shifted around, making a game of Polymer more like futzing with a Rubik’s Cube than simply swapping tiles.
It could have made for a Zen-like experience if not for the fact that the game’s most alluring modes are set to timers. The default setting is a two-minute score grind, which serves as a good training ground for the two other scored modes: a "make the biggest shape possible" game type, and an even more nail-biting "bomb mode," which replaces some of the shapes with four-sided bombs that detonate after their timer runs out. These modes can be unlocked by achieving certain benchmarks in the game, or you can simply purchase them outright to speed up the process.
While Polymer is an enjoyable experience as it is, the lack of an untimed and scored game mode seems like a missed opportunity. Fighting the clock doesn't allow that much time to enjoy the mechanics, whereas simply making a giant shape just isn't all that fun. And while the newly-added endless game mode lets you play and play to your heart's content, the lack of scoring or any sort of objective makes it feel a bit pointless. With some minor tweaks, Polymer could end up being one of the best puzzle games on iOS, but as of now it’s just missing something.
The bottom line. Polymer is a great concept, but the app is just a few tweaks shy of being essential.

Big Chunk of HP’s webOS Enyo Team Heads for Google
The Verge is reporting that Google has snapped up a large portion of HP’s Enyo development team, the folks responsible for keeping an open-source version of the HTML5-based webOS platform alive and well.
While it’s unknown what project leader Matt McNulty and his merry band of webOS misfits will be doing at Google, they’ve actually got plenty to choose from, given the search giant controls both Android as well as the stagnating Chrome OS, which isn’t so far removed from Enyo in the first place.
So what happens now with HP’s open-source plans for webOS? The official statement from the company seems to indicate business as usual.

Superstar 7th Graders Publish Their Own eBook to the iBookstore
When 2012 rolled around, Andrea Santilli, a teacher at Woodlawn Beach Middle School in Gulf Breeze, Florida, wanted to find a new way to challenge her 7th grade Advanced Life Science students. She wanted to help thems develop relevant lifelong skills in addition to their regular studies, so Santilli set out on a unique quest.
"I wanted to give them the opportunity to be published so they could use this as part of their academic resume and to make what they learn have real meaning," says Santilli. So she turned to Apple.
After the launch of iBooks Author in January, Santilli immediately recognized the potential of the powerful new software and jumped on it. Instead of simply looking at the app as a way to expand the students' digital skills, Santilli saw it as an opportunity to have her class become the first group of 7th graders to publish a digitally interactive book, and to have their work available not just locally but to anyone around the world.
Fortuantely, the class managed just that. The book is an interactive field guide of Northwest Florida titled Creatures, Plants and More!, and was released in the iBookstore on April 26. The response has been tremendous: the book has already been downloaded 1,000 times.

Smart Baby Monitor Review
The Smart Baby Monitor actually took longer to arrive than my baby did. Announced at CES in January 2011, it only started shipping at the end of February 2012, but it’s every bit the bundle of joy I hoped it would be. An Apple-esque marriage of form and function, Withings’ sleek design and tight iOS integration doesn’t just give parents peace of mind, it raises the bar for luxury iPhone accessories.
Closed, the petite clamshell Smart Baby Monitor fits comfortably in my hand. And when opened to reveal the high-resolution (2048x1536) 3MP video camera, it feels a bit like an old-school iPod, with its gleaming white enclosure, touch-sensitive buttons, and circular speaker.

Lights, Camera, Apple: Macs, iPhones, and iPads on TV
Apple is notorious for its product placement. Unlike most companies, Cupertino doesn't pay for placement--it offers product instead. Sometimes it's subtle, and other times writers (who are oftentimes fans themselves) create entire episodes centered around a devotion to Apple. From vintage Apple to the iPad, here are 10 shows that feature Apple computers.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II Review
The lengthy wait between installments could be taken as a sign of Sega's effort to make Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II a better game than its underperforming predecessor. In some ways, that's true. Improved physics, crisply-detailed environments, and a handful of interesting new gameplay tweaks give this second jaunt better staying power, but with speed and precision being crucial ingredients for a successful Sonic outing, Episode II's frustrating touch controls just don't keep up.
Though absent from the first episode, Sonic's pal Tails makes a return this time around and offers some welcome hands-on help -- whether you play solo or with a local friend via Bluetooth. Triggering split-second cooperative moves lets Tails hoist Sonic into the air, drag him through underwater stretches, and form a massive spinning ball of destruction to thunder through levels. Despite being simple to engage, these maneuvers aren't always easy to control once you get going, which dovetails with bigger control issues that mar the experience.
The virtual thumbstick and buttons are nowhere near as tight and responsive as they need to be for a game that flies along at this speed, and Sonic's sludgy response time exacerbates the impact of wild spikes in the difficulty in later stages. Puzzling enemy and obstacle placement also trip up the duo to an aggravating extent when you'd rather be blasting along. However, these zippy stretches are still smoother than the platforming areas.
It's a shame, since there are moments where the fast-paced flow hits its stride and captures the raw momentum that makes Sonic titles a blast to play. Then things fall apart. Beautiful and varied as they may be, the stage environments sometimes run counter to this kinetic energy, and the control problems are severe enough that it took extreme self-restraint not to hurl my iPad at the wall on certain occasions.
The bottom line. Even with some notable improvements, Episode II's frustrating lack of precision builds to an intense crescendo so quickly that you'll think twice about sticking with it to the end.

Wednesday Recap: Seagate Hearts LaCie, HP Slashing 27,000 Jobs, DigiTimes Rumors
One would think with all of the hard drives in the world, the market would be strong, but the announcement today that Seagate intends to acquire controlling interest of LaCie certainly gives one pause. The storage titan has offered to purchase LaCie CEO Philippe Spruch’s 64.5 percent ownership, which pins the value of the deal at $186 million USD. Spruch plans to join Seagate and lead the company’s consumer product division when the deal closes.

Currently available to all Nextiva clients, according to the company it “works hard to deliver the lowest possible rates to clients and hopes to inform you in the near future of even bigger discounts.”
Last month, TMCnet reported that the company has received a new round of funding from private equity and venture capital investors. With this newly accessible capital, the organization will be able to make some significant enhancements to its VoIP platform, in addition to hiring at least 100 new employees throughout this year.
“At Nextiva, we take pride in our ability to secure ongoing relationships with new customers and hire the best and brightest talent to deliver amazing service to them,” Yaniv Masjedi, VP at Nextiva, said in a statement.

Where to Buy Third-Party Thunderbolt Cables
Occasionally, new tech can feel like a car without wheels. When Apple and Intel announced their new Thunderbolt input/output interface last year, the list of compatible devices was a bit slim. Obviously, the super-fast data transfer speeds are now showing up on new peripherals with each passing month, but what about that expensive Thunderbolt cable sold by Apple? As noted by Macworld, a few companies are finally stepping up with third-party alternatives. While there's not much of a price incentive, these cables at least offer slightly different features from Apple's lone offering.

Designer Jonathan Ive Says Apple’s Current Work “Most Important” to Date
It goes without saying that the death of Steve Jobs last year left a void at Apple, but thankfully the co-founder hand-picked the best team imaginable to follow in his footsteps, including industrial designer Jonathan Ive, who is back on his home turf in the U.K. this week to be knighted by the Queen (shown above).
While there, Ive spoke at length for a two-part interview with The Telegraph, and The Next Web has assembled some of the best bits of that interview. When asked which design he felt was his most important, Ive called up the spirit of Jobs himself to look forward, rather than into the past.

Got Your Sneakers Ready? Time to Take the Leap from Virtualization to Cloud
According to Adaptive Computing, the challenges that the company frequently hears about are surrounding speed, service delivery, costs, instability and flexibility. That’s where Moab can come in.
“We believe the solution to these challenges is the Moab Cloud Suite and cloud computing in general as embodied in Moab Cloud Suite,” Harrington said. “… Moab focuses on the private cloud and things that are like private cloud. We don’t power Amazon-type clouds. We power clouds in your environment. We allow you to have the benefits in your environment of an Amazon-type cloud – and actually much better then what Amazon can offer – but within the cost structure of your environment, being able to leverage the investments that you have already made in the hardware that you own.”
“Cloud computing allows you to deliver elastic services to your users while saving money in the process,” he added.
