Western Digital Touts SSD Speeds from My Book VelociRaptor Duo HDD
Western Digital has introduced the 2TB MyBook VelociRaptor Duo, a Thunderbolt-powered external hard drive that touts performance speeds matching those of fast solid-state storage (SSD) with data rates up to 400MB per second.
The company has accomplished this task by pairing two 1TB 10,000 RPM VelociRaptor hard drives inside a beefy external black case ready to rock your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac. The dual-drive storage is capable of RAID 0 for performance or RAID 1 for maximum protection, and comes with two Thunderbolt ports for daisy-chaining to other devices.
"The My Book VelociRaptor Duo is the fastest and most reliable high performance consumer storage device on the market today," explains Jody Bradshaw, senior director of WD's consumer storage solutions group. "Creative professionals now have access to a super-charged storage drive that will keep pace with even the most demanding projects. Daisy-chaining multiple My Book VelociRaptor Duo devices together offers even greater speed, more capacity and flexibility."
It all sounds great until you get to the price: $899.99 retail, but at least it's available now at select U.S. retailers as well as through Western Digital's online store. And hey, it's still cheaper than 2TB worth of SSD

OMG! Activision Anthology Brings 45 Atari 2600 Classics to iOS
Activision Publishing, Inc. has released Activision Anthology, a free universal iOS app which brings all 45 of the company's classic Atari 2600 games to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad at last.
And yes, that includes the original Pitfall!, which was recently released in a shiny new Temple Run-style version -- but if you were jonesing for the real thing, you'll get that and a whole lot more here.
While Activision Anthology is a free app, it only includes the classic KABOOM! -- to get the rest of the catalog, you'll have to pony up for some in-app purchases, available as a set of 11 titles for $2.99 or you can procure the remaining 44 games for a mere $6.99 in one fell swoop.
Between this app and the existing Atari's Greatest Hits, we're seriously reliving our youth over here, folks! Activision Anthology is available now from the App Store and requires an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad running iOS 4.3 or later.
Now excuse us as we bail out on work for the rest of the day

Thursday Recap: CEO Chats, Adobe Retina Display Updates, Kindle Fire Sells Out
Reuters is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page have been holding a series of "behind-the-scenes conversations about a range of intellectual property matters." According to sources in their inner circle, the two executive spoke by phone last week, presumably ahead of Friday's courtroom defeat for Google partner Samsung. Another source claims a new meeting was scheduled for this Friday but "delayed for reason that were unclear," but additional meetings will be held in the coming weeks. The move would certainly fit with Cook's own comments about wanting to settle patent issues outside of the courtroom, but we're a bit skeptical any such talks are actually taking place.
Adobe: Retina Support Coming This Fall for Key Creative Suite 6 AppsThere are still plenty of Mac apps yet to be updated for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display's high-resolution screen, and Adobe's Creative Suite 6 is definitely among them. But that will be changing this fall, as the company has officially announced Retina Display (i.e., HiDPI) support will be arriving in the next few months for a number of the company's key Creative Suite 6 and Creative Cloud software. The free updates will include Dreamweaver, Edge Animate, Illustrator, Lightroom, Photoshop Touch for iPad, Prelude, Premiere Pro, SpeedGrade and yes, Photoshop, which was demoed during the introduction of the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display back in June. According to the company's Photoshop.com Blog, Photoshop Elements "will not fully support HiDPI displays in the immediate future," but the team is hard at work determining what they need to do to make that happen.
Kindle Fire Now Sold Out, We Really Can't Imagine WhyAmazon issued a press release this morning to boast about selling out of the Kindle Fire, its number one best-selling product ever. Claiming the seven-inch tablet has already captured 22 percent of the U.S. tablet market, the news seems curiously timed considering the e-tailer is holding a media event next Thursday, which seems quite certain to debut a new Kindle Fire (and maybe a few other surprises). "Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead," CEO Jeff Bezos says. "We will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem.

Cisco Named Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant
However, Gartner also recognizes the growing role of cloud services, as mentioned in its study “Predicts 2012: Successful UC Deployments Depend on Defining Organizational Objectives and Understanding the Challenges.” In the next four years, many more organizations will use a hosted subscription model for their UC services, and Cisco is already on board for that. Customers can deploy Cisco’s UC solution from virtual desktop integration options, or with a fully or partially hosted model through a subscription-based offering.
“Enterprises wish to avoid ‘closed gardens’ and weak support for standards to ensure choice and control,” say Bern Elliot and Steve Blood of Gartner. “Support for standards is a critical consideration, as enterprises wish to integrate their UC deployments with business partners, customers, business applications and third-party products.” In these regards, Cisco has certainly met Gartner’s standards, with standards supported deployments that work with a variety of devices.
As the Gartner reports are based on customer success as much as the company’s numbers and technology, this stands as a very nice achievement for Cisco. The company continues to innovate and excel in the market, so this recognition is well deserved, and will not likely be its last.
The full report can be found through Cisco’s website.

Apple, Qualcomm Tried Unsuccessfully to Invest in Taiwanese Chip Supplier TSMC
Bloomberg is reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has told both Apple and Qualcomm to take a hike when the companies separately offered the chip supplier cash to invest in their expanding business.
"Both proposals included investments, each of more than $1 billion, for the world’s largest custom maker of chips to set aside production dedicated to making chips exclusively for them," the report reveals, quoting unidentified "people with knowledge of the matter."
Mobile is where the growth is, so it's no surprise that both Apple and Qualcomm have come knocking on the door of TSMC, who reportedly "wants to retain control of its plants, doesn't want to sell part of itself and doesn't need cash for investments," according to chief financial officer Lora Ho in a July 19 interview.
"Apple and Qualcomm are trying to improve their position in a supply chain where a shrinking number of companies are capable of churning out the millions of parts needed to meet surging smartphone demand," the report concludes. "As they become more like computers, the advanced mobile phones need more sophisticated processors made with the latest production technology."
TSMC is currently Qualcomm's biggest supplier according to Bloomberg data, but the company appears to be keeping all of its options open for now -- probably a smart move considering the mobile chip market is expected to explode even bigger in the years ahead.

5 Smartphones Giving the iPhone a Run for Its Money in China
Last week, market research firm IDC emailed analysts with the latest data on who was leading the pack, and the results were not good for Cupertino. Arch-courtroom rival Samsung holds the top spot with 19 percent of the market. Apple, after launching the iPhone 4S this past January to riot-inducing excitement and immediately grabbing 19 percent of the market, has now fallen to fourth place, clinging to a 10 percent marketshare, with users desperately waiting for the new iPhone to be released.
So who is applying all of this heat in the Chinese smartphone marketplace? A bunch of manufacturers you may have never heard of with a crew of "cheap and cheerful" devices you might not have known existed.
So let's take a look some of the cooler devices that are taking Apple's Chinese lunch money.

Nokia Claims "Things Are About to Change" in New YouTube VideoNever has a video of a woman riding a bike been so mysterious! The Verge is reporting that Nokia has posted a YouTube teaser video which promises "things are about to change," which points to the company's September 5 joint announcement with Microsoft to chat up new Windows Phone 8 hardware. The 21-second video offers little in the way of clues, but it's probably safe to say that its content may have been shot with a forthcoming Nokia handset -- of which the rumor mill claims could now be three different models. As fans of the Lumia 900, we're definitely waiting impatiently to see what's being announced.

New Toys from Samsung: The Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Camera, and Windows 8 Tablets and Phone
All in all, Samsung has pulled together a very nice suite of features. But we wonder a great deal about the efficiency of the Note's general size. We've had an original Note in hand for some time, but after the initial deep dive that goes with learning a new device, we haven't exactly put it through any blisteringly detailed use. Our own biggest problem is that it typically falls short in terms of offering enough functionality to make it a device of choice. And it is simply too large to just carry around as a smartphone.
It will be interesting to see how - or if - sales for the Note II develop. We greatly applaud the "innovation" but we're not convinced the form factor is a winner.
The Galaxy Camera
Samsung next surprised us by debuting a new camera, and specifically an Android-driven camera. The idea of the camera is to marry both video and optical technology with some smartphone capabilities. To date, most smartphones from most vendors (with the possible exception of Nokia) have offered basic camera functionality along with some software capabilities for editing.
Samsung has opted to take a different approach here - start with a very high end camera concept and then add some mobile operating system capabilities to the mix, so that one ends up with a very sophisticated mobile camera. Hence the Samsung Galaxy camera, shown in the accompanying image.

Bluetooth Speaker Roundup
Bluetooth speakers are having a moment--not only are they dropping in price and increasing in quality, they provide more versatility than speaker docks. You can stream music from a Mac, an iOS device, or even a PC or Android handset, and you’re not stuck in one spot, either. As our office fills with piles of Bluetooth speakers, we singled out three in the $150 range: The main boast of SuperTooth’s Disco is 28 watts of kicking audio, while Soundfreaq’s Sound Step Recharge aims for versatility with four input options, and Brookstone packs big sound and sensitive controls into the Big Blue Studio.
Based on pure audio might, the 30-watt Big Blue Studio tap-dances all over the competition. Its two 2.5-inch front-facing drivers and 3-inch subwoofer pack enough punch to fill a living room or studio apartment, with adjustable bass and treble. The Disco is anemic by comparison--it loses audio clarity at about two-thirds of the max volume, with no bass levels worth mentioning. The Sound Step Recharge provides adequate sound, but it loses much of the midrange when maxed out.
But the Sound Step Recharge wins the versatility crown. It’s the Swiss Army knife of speakers, supporting four inputs: Bluetooth, the 30-pin Apple dock connector, a standard 3.5mm line-in, and even a built-in FM Radio. It charges your iOS device when plugged in, and the rechargeable battery lasts about four hours when transmitting via Bluetooth. Both the Big Blue Studio and Disco have a line-in jack along with Bluetooth, and the Disco’s rechargeable battery lasts about three hours. The hulking Big Blue Studio needs to be plugged in at all times, limiting its mobility even more than its 6-pound weight (the smaller, rechargeable Big Blue Live sells for $99.99).
Operating the Sound Step Recharge via Bluetooth handled like a dream, and was simple to pair and connect. It includes a remote control, and an optional app turns your iOS device into a remote too. Big Blue Studio was similarly simple to pair, and only lost its connection when the iPhone had left the testing room, gone down the hall, and down half a flight of stairs. The Disco, however, had trouble keeping a connection: audio would drop intermittently, and we had to restart the iPhone completely to restore it.
None of these speakers has a radical design, but the Big Blue Studio’s pearl white casing and aluminum grills look like they belong in any Mac household, although the touch volume buttons at the top of the speaker come across as gimmicky and unnatural to use. The Sound Step Recharge looks like any number of speaker docks that have existed since the dawn of the iPod; that said, its finish and soft speaker cover look sharp. Unfortunately, the Disco yet again pulls up in last with function as the only clear goal.
The bottom line. For all of the Disco’s reported power, we were left with the blues. Soundfreaq makes sure that anyone can get the party started the way they want, while Big Blue Studio changed our perception of Brookstone, and wins this battle of the bands.

As one of the most widely-used cloud storage services, there is -- of course -- quite a bit of personal data sitting on the Dropbox servers. The new security measure, currently in beta, will make it harder for hackers to access accounts.
Much like the security feature currently available to all Google users, two-factor authentication requires an additional login step when a Dropbox account is accessed from a new computer or other device.
If you're interested in turning the extra protection on now, you'll first need to grab the 1.5.12 beta. The two-step verification is turned on under the Dropbox "security" tab, and you'll receive an access code via SMS when a new device attempts to access your account.
Dropbox will also issue two-factor users a 16-digit code, which provides a back-up in case a phone is lost or unavailable.
The new security feature arrives just a month after Dropbox admitted to a data breach which affected a "small number" of user accounts. The usernames and passwords were allegedly swiped from other sites where the same credentials were used; a major reason for two-factor authentication.
Dropbox also recently added the ability to view other computers and mobile devices with access to your account.

iPad Mini Event Reportedly Scheduled for October
Last week, tech bloggers were waxing about the merits of Apple splitting the little iPad away from a September iPhone 5 event. The primary argument centered on the company getting more marketing bang for the buck by allowing each device to shine on its own.
According to Macotakara (via CNET), an "Asian source" has confirmed to the Japanese site the name of Apple's little tablet is, in fact, the "iPad Mini." Could it be this is a case of bloggers guessing the correct name? Or maybe Apple just grew attached to the rumored moniker.
The same source also claims the iPad Mini will shrink down to 7.85 inches and feature the normal Apple logo on the device's back.
A separate report from AllThingsD seems to support the concept of separate events for the little iPad and iPhone 5. According to unnamed sources, Apple will hold the iPhone event on September 12, with an iPad Mini announcement slated for October. If further rumors hold true, the iPad Mini won't be revealed until after the iPhone 5 hits the streets on September 21.
Of course, absolutely none of this is really "confirmed" until Apple makes its intentions a little more clear. Despite mounting evidence and the assurances of multiple unnamed sources, Apple has yet to even confirm the existence of the September 12 iPhone event.
That said, if the smaller Apple tablet is real, the iPad Mini name makes obvious sense. But the company does like to pull a fast one, now and then; the third-gen iPad does't have a three in its name. Maybe Cupertino pulls another strange move and just calls this tablet "iPad," too.
Regardless, we'll likely have some answers within the next couple weeks. Fall 2012 could turn into an amazing season for iOS devotees.

A Widescreen iPhone Might Look Weird, But It Makes Perfect Sense
When Steve Jobs took the wraps off the iPhone back in 2007, he described it as, among other things, a "widescreen iPod with touch controls." But when we finally got our hands on one, we realized that wasn't exactly true. Sure, it was wider than any of the iPods at the time, but it wasn't quite widescreen--rather, the iPhone utilized a 3.5-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, closer to a standard-definition television set than an HD one.
But now, as we approach the sixth incarnation of Apple's iconic handset, it appears that the iPhone is indeed going full 16:9 widescreen, with a just-under-4-inch display that adds 176 pixels to its height while retaining its 640-pixel width. Besides increasing the physical length of the phone by roughly 9 millimeters (which will be more noticeable than it seems), the iPhone's alleged new display will no doubt enhance the iOS experience, with a fifth row of apps on the home screen and whatever other tricks Apple has up its sleeve.
But I'm not all that surprised Apple chose not to follow the how-big-can-we-get road paved by the Galaxy and the Nexus. If there's anything about the iPhone that sets it apart from the rest of the pack--other than its brilliant design, of course--it's the thousands of quality apps that run exclusively on iOS. Completely changing the aspect ratio wouldn't necessarily turn them away in droves, but it would certainly add a reason to consider another platform.
You see, it's not just about the new iPhone. Apple still has the iPhone 4 and 4S to worry about, and developers are not going to relish the task of suddenly designing for two vastly different resolutions. With a vertical-only change, Apple is assuring developers that designing new apps won't be any more difficult than it is today.
For one, existing apps can run as written, likely with a pair of black bars to block out the extra pixels (not unlike the iPad's pixel doubling feature). For another, adding height won't need to dramatically alter the appearance of our favorite apps. Apple is merely giving them more useable space, and I expect scrolling games like Doodle Jump and text-centric apps like Tweetbot to really take advantage of the extra real estate.
And Apple's making things even easier by bringing a feature called auto layout from OS X (in the land where where Macbook Pros are 16:10 and the 11-inch Macbook Air and iMac are true widescreen) to iOS. According to Apple's own developer notes, "Cocoa auto layout allows individual views to declare their own preferred size, which means you don't have to specify new layout if the label's text changes." In other words, the objects are smart enough to shift and scale according to the device they're on.
This process might work just as well for more width (though the data would probably get a bit scrunched), but the widescreen is a deliberate move by Apple. We all know Apple wants the iPhone to fit comfortably in our pockets, and everyone I know who has a Galaxy S III is forced to use a lame hip holster. But the main reason behind the change is Apple TV.
It's only a matter of time before Apple's streaming box is opened up to developers. Wouldn't it be something if Airplay worked both ways, and Apple TV could push content to your iPhone? Obviously, our HDTVs are 16:9, so a similar-sized handheld screen would scale Apple TV apps perfectly. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if the so-called iPad mini is widescreen, too; if not immediately then certainly within a year or two.
So don't fret about the strange-looking screen you see in all those spy photos. There's always a method behind Apple's madness, and besides, after a few days of using it, we'll all wonder how we ever lived without that fifth row of apps.

Monday Recap: iPhone 5 NFC Chip, Apple Stock Soars, Eight Possibly Banned Samsung Devices
We've seen images of purported iPhone 5 guts before, but the pics acquired by Apple Insider today are a little bit different. Close to the earpiece, there appears to be a near field communication (NFC) chip. The subject of significantly easier payment systems -- like waving your iPhone 5 over the coffee shop's card reader -- came up during WWDC 12. We already know Apple is planning to keep us organized with Passbook in iOS 6; an NFC chip seems like a valid possibility. Especially since, you know, Apple bought all those NFC patents this year.
Apple Inc. Shares Rally Amid Samsung VictoryAfter a $1.05 billion award in damages, Apple must be feeling pretty hot right now. But the outcome of the epic Apple v. Samsung trial did more than just enforce the company's patents. Today, Apple Inc. stock rose 2-percent to $676.56, according to Reuters; the all-time high is $680.87/share. Other U.S. stocks didn't perform too favorably in the same time frame, but then again, they didn't just receive the brand boost from a big win like Apple.
Apple Names Eight Samsung Devices For BanishmentAre you tired of hearing about the Samsung v. Apple trial, yet? Well, don't get too comfortable. Appeals will likely stretch on for quite some time, and today, Apple has filed a notice naming eight different Samsung products it believes should receive banishment from the U.S. market. The filing (via The Verge) lists the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 (AT&T, Skyrocket, T-Mobile), Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Prevail. Of course, these assertions are purely on the part of Apple; Judge Koh would have to believe "irreparable harm" will befall Apple if the Samsung products don't get the axe.
German Consumer Group Threatens Facebook with Legal ActionA German consumer watchdog group is threatening Facebook with legal action if the social network giant doesn't make significant changes to how user data is shared with third parties. The Federation of Consumer Organizations believes Facebook is violating privacy laws by giving out user information via the new Facebook App Center. The organization has given Facebook an ultimatum: comply with privacy regulations by September 4, or face legal action.

Qualcomm Takes Top Slot in Telematics Study, MiX Making Up Ground Quickly
ABI did note one up-and-coming company that is still in the back of the pack, but making progress. MiX Telematics finished seventh in the recent survey but ABI is labeling the company as “one to watch” thanks to how quickly it actually is climbing up the charts.
One ABI Research analysts was bullish on MiX in a recent press release saying, “Having recently moved beyond its South African home market into the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States, while also expanding its European base, the company’s regional coverage is improving. This, in addition to the fact that features such as real-time traffic and turn-by-turn navigation are now finding their way into MiX’s solutions means that the company is sure to rank even higher next time around.”

WSJ Examines the Darker Side of Freemium
The Wall Street Journal has a fascinating report this week on how the "freemium" model doesn't always pan out for businesses, even as more and more of our favorite apps start to take the plunge into such waters.
"Freemium" is the term used to describe an app or service that baits users with a freebie, then once they're hooked, lures them toward the paid service. This strategy has worked well for countless companies -- but that's not the case for everyone.
Chargify LLC is a billing management software provider who launched in 2009 with the freemium model, giving away its wares to merchants with less than 50 customers per month. Unfortunately, the majority of its users never moved up to the $49 per month paid option for those with more than 50 customers per month.
Nearly bankrupt, Chargify soon ditched the freemium model and now has more than 900 paying customers with a starter plan of $65 per month, which co-found Lance Walley calls "the best business decision we ever made."
Among the success stories is Evernote, who offers a Premium version of its free note-taking app for $5 per month or $45 per year but has managed to thrive with fewer than one percent of its users paying within the first month, which eventually rises to 12 percent after two years.
"Freemium needs time to work," explains Evernote co-founder Phil Libin. "You can't use it for something that's a very hit-driven business." Nor is it surviving on users alone -- the company has raised more than $100 million in venture capital during its first four years.
"Freemium is really a construct of the digital age because there's almost no marginal cost to digital goods," concludes Chris Anderson, author of Free: The Future of a Radical Price.
Does that mean we can blame Google?
