Ubiquiti Develops New AirFiber Outdoor Wireless Backhaul Radio Platform

By Jayashree AdkoliTMCnet Contributor

Global wireless bandwidth usage has increased tenfold in the last four years, as more and more users take up bandwidth hungry applications. Over the next two years, the market for wireless backhaul is expected to surge, according to a recent article on TMCnet.

Ubiquiti Networks Inc. recently added a new outdoor wireless backhaul radio platform to its portfolio, cashing in on this trend and with an objective to bridge the digital divide between emerging and developed markets with high performance networking solutions. The new outdoor wireless backhaul radio platform, called as AirFiber, is caters to the Wireless ISP Industry.

Operating in the license-free 24GHz band, Ubiquiti's (News - Alert) new AirFiber platform applies an innovative dual antenna design, allowing for Frequency Division Duplex (FDD), Time Division Duplex (TDD) and the company’s patent-pending Hybrid Division Duplex (HDD) modes of operation.

AirFiber is joining the company’s other technology platforms AirMax, UniFi and AirVision, as well as Ubiquiti's first proprietary in-house radio design effort for the Wireless ISP Industry.

Apart from operating in the license-free 24GHz band, the new AirFiber platform features ultra low-latency 1.4Gbps throughput performance. Since it leverages 24GHz band, it can be deployed nearly anywhere, facilitating a plug-and-play option.

Through AirFiber, Internet is available to many unserved areas of the world.

Offering optical fiber network performance without the significant capital costs associated with fiber cable network deployment, the AirFiber is priced at $2995per link. Customer shipments are expected in June.

"Ubiquiti has always focused on building platforms that disrupt markets not only in pricing, but also in performance,” said Robert J. Pera, founder and CEO of Ubiquiti Networks. “AirFiber is an important step in Ubiquiti's pursuit of being further recognized as a technology leader."

The company recently appointed Bill Gurley, the general partner at Benchmark Capital, to the board of directors.
