I'm not a fan of the Smart Cover because I'm not particularly satisfied with the fact that my iPad's backend is completely open to a world filled with scratchy things. I usually lean toward folio-style cases to keep the iPad protected, and fortunately Incipio has plenty of offerings. This week, we're reviewing the Incipio Slim Kickstand folio case for the third-generation iPad. It's exactly the kind of quality we expect from an Incipio case, and it nicely accentuates the iPad's svelte figure.
The iPad snaps into a hard plastic shell on the inside, and the folio lid connects in the back and drapes over the front. You can stand up the iPad in three different angles depending on your viewing preference, and to type, just fold the folio cover backward. The case is nice and thin, though it smelled rather potently of the vegan "leather" material that it's made out of. The hippie in me is happy to know that no animals were harmed in the making of this case, however. The Kickstand doesn't come in other colors just yet, but this black folio case fits well with a casual business attire.
At its viewing angles, the case felt a little flimsy and unanchored, but fortunately it's stable once it's on a table. I don't know how it'd perform on an airplane tray table, however, so I'd caution against hitting it with your knee.
Another major caveat of the case is that it doesn't have the magnet inside the flap to shut off the iPad screen, so you'll have to make sure to do so before you close the folio lid.
The bottom line. If you use the iPad for Keynote presentations and PDF diagrams and aren't crazy about the Smart Cover, this case will do. But for something that's both rugged and stylish, other cases will do.
