Western Digital Touts SSD Speeds from My Book VelociRaptor Duo HDD

If you've got money to burn and are looking for maximum speed, you've likely ditched traditional hard drives for solid-state storage. But Western Digital wants you to take one more look at its shiny platters.

Western Digital has introduced the 2TB MyBook VelociRaptor Duo, a Thunderbolt-powered external hard drive that touts performance speeds matching those of fast solid-state storage (SSD) with data rates up to 400MB per second.

The company has accomplished this task by pairing two 1TB 10,000 RPM VelociRaptor hard drives inside a beefy external black case ready to rock your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac. The dual-drive storage is capable of RAID 0 for performance or RAID 1 for maximum protection, and comes with two Thunderbolt ports for daisy-chaining to other devices.

"The My Book VelociRaptor Duo is the fastest and most reliable high performance consumer storage device on the market today," explains Jody Bradshaw, senior director of WD's consumer storage solutions group.  "Creative professionals now have access to a super-charged storage drive that will keep pace with even the most demanding projects. Daisy-chaining multiple My Book VelociRaptor Duo devices together offers even greater speed, more capacity and flexibility."

It all sounds great until you get to the price: $899.99 retail, but at least it's available now at select U.S. retailers as well as through Western Digital's online store. And hey, it's still cheaper than 2TB worth of SSD
