Apple Launches iTunes Store in 12 Asian Countries

It may seem hard to believe for those of us who take it for granted, but there are still many parts of the world where the iTunes Store is not available. Thankfully, there are now 12 less places without it across Asia today.

Apple announced the launch of the iTunes Store in 12 countries across Asia on Thursday, which includes "an incredible selection of local and international music from all the major labels and thousands of independent labels."

Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are the headliner countries where local artists such as Jay Chou, Girls Generation and Andy Lau now mix it up with international artists including ADELE, The Beatles and Jason Mraz, and world-renowned classical musicians including Lang Lang, Yo Yo Ma and Yuja Wang."

"Apple is bringing the iTunes Store to music fans in Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam," Apple also noted in its press release on Thursday. "Customers can also rent or purchase movies from the iTunes Store, with many available in stunning HD, from major studios including 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. The iTunes Store joins the revolutionary App Store which offers more than 650,000 apps to consumers in 155 countries."

Customers in these 12 Asian countries can now choose from over 20 million songs available to purchase and download via the iTunes Store, and will also enjoy the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for downloading previously purchased content as well as the optional iTunes Match for storing a user's entire music library in the cloud.

New iTunes Store users in these countries will need iTunes 10.6.3 for Mac or Windows (a free download from Apple's website), and iTunes Store purchases require a valid credit card with a billing address in the country where they reside.

Apple Nabs Preliminary Injunction Against Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in U.S.

While it's not quite the final word just yet, Apple scored a victory in its efforts to stomp out Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet on Tuesday night, with a U.S. judge granting the iPad maker's request for a preliminary injunction against the rival slate.

Reuters is reporting that U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has granted Apple a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Android-powered Galaxy Tab 10.1, one of the few real contenders to its iPad tablet throne.

"Although Samsung has a right to compete, it does not have a right to compete unfairly, by flooding the market with infringing products," Koh's ruling on Tuesday evening reads.

Apple must first post a $2.6 million bond before the preliminary injunction becomes effective, "to protect against damages suffered by Samsung if the injunction is later found to have been wrong."

And there's the rub: Samsung is likely to appeal the ruling in Federal court, which may yet have the final word.

"Apple sought a preliminary injunction of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, based on a single design patent that addressed just one aspect of the product's overall design," Samsung said in a statement. "Should Apple continue to make legal claims based on such a generic design patent, design innovation and progress in the industry could be restricted."

Some analysts agree with Samsung, claiming that Apple is being too aggressive in trying to squash its rival.

"The relief being given to Apple here is extraordinary," said Colleen Chien, a professor at Santa Clara Law in Silicon Valley. "Preliminary injunctions are rarely asked for and rarely granted.

"That this was a design patent and copying was alleged distinguish this case from plain vanilla utility patent cases," Chien concludes. "Cases involving these kinds of patents are based more on a counterfeiting theory than a competition theory, so I don't expect this case to have ramifications for all smartphone disputes, but rather those involving design patents and the kind of product resemblance we had here."

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Review

by Seamus Bellamy 0Comments

Originally released in 2008 on the PC, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition offers a complex solo role-playing experience, made all the more engrossing by the rich, dangerous world it takes place in. It tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, a gifted warrior who belongs to an order of magic and alchemy-aided monster-hunting mercenaries known as Witchers. While on a mission, Geralt is seriously wounded. He wakes years later in the Witchers’ fortress, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Before his compatriots have time to give him the most basic of information, the fortress is attacked by a group of bandits who steal the secrets to the Witchers’ inhuman powers.

Despite his amnesia, Geralt is forced to leave the fortress to hunt the bandits down, and recover the secrets of his order before they can be used for evil. As Geralt progresses through the game, he’ll learn new spells, improve their combat capabilities, and come into possession of powerful new armor and weapons. Players can choose from a number of difficulty levels, and three different camera angles--over the shoulder and two distinct overhead views

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 Review

by Nathan Meunier 0Comments

Ever since I was first introduced to the tabletop fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering in high school, I've spent countless hours of my existence tapping mana, flinging spells, and sending hordes of bizarre beasts onto the battlefield. The Duels of the Planeswalkers spinoff series did a great job of reviving the classic wizard dueling strategy on consoles in recent years, but Magic 2013 is the first installment to hit a portable device, and it's absolutely fantastic on iOS.

The iPad serves as a perfect conduit for the familiar turn-based card battling action. Laying down mana, summoning creatures, clashing in combat, and using sneaky spells from your hand to trip up and ultimately annihilate opponents is a very fluid affair with the touch screen. You can tap any card to get a closer view, and the hands-on interface feels as natural as if you were playing with actual cards. This lets you focus on strategy, which is what makes Magic 2013 so engrossing.

How to Play Music the Easy Way Using GarageBand for iPad

by Chris Slate, Graham Barlow, and J.R. Bookwalter 0Comments Learn to Play Music the Easy Way

While seasoned musicians will take to GarageBand like the proverbial duck to water, what about the rest of us? People who can’t play an instrument might be left thinking the app isn’t for them, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Apple has created something called Smart Instruments that allow anybody to play like a pro, even if they have no musical knowledge whatsoever. GarageBand for iPad ($4.99) includes Smart Instruments for guitars, strings, keyboards, bass, and drum--everything you need to make beautiful music.

1. Choose Your Instrument

GarageBand opens in Instruments view; swipe left or right to select the instrument you want to try first. Choose Smart Guitar and you’ll be given an acoustic guitar with some strings to strum. Tap the chord name (such as C or Em) to hear the whole chord strummed on a guitar. You can also strum your finger up and down the individual strings to create a finger-picking effect. There you go--you’re playing guitar!
