WSJ Claims Next iPhone Will Have Thinner Screen Thanks to In-Cell Technology

It seems we'll never again have any surprises from an iPhone release, thanks to incessant rumors about nearly every little detail finding its way to our eyes and ears months ahead of time. And now it's going to have a thinner screen, too.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple's next iPhone "currently being manufactured by Asian component makers" will arrive this fall with a thinner screen than ever before, thanks to the combined might of Sharp, LG Display and Japan Display Inc.

"The technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, making it unnecessary to have a separate touch-screen layer," explains DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase on the new in-cell technology. "The absence of the layer, usually about half a millimeter thick, not only makes the whole screen thinner, but the quality of displayed images would improve."

In-cell technology comes at a convenient time for Apple as rival Samsung is pushing "organic light-emitting displays" as a key feature of its latest Galaxy S III Android handset, which features a 4.8-inch OLED screen, yet is even thinner than the current iPhone 4S.

"A thinner screen in the next iPhone could make the whole device slimmer, or make extra room available for other components such as batteries," the report reveals, which could be crucial if rumors that the handset will use 4G LTE data prove true.

"But in-cell touch screens are harder to manufacture than conventional LCD screens," the report continues. "The people familiar with the situation said that LCD makers are finding the manufacturing process challenging and time-consuming as they scramble to achieve high yield rates."

The next iPhone is widely expected to include a 4.0-inch display, which is made possible by elongating the vertical height of the handset.

Marvel Launches The Avengers Second Screen App Ahead of Comic-Con

The mammoth San Diego Comic-Con kicks off this Thursday, and Marvel Entertainment is working to keep fans excited about the September 25 arrival of its blockbuster The Avengers on home video with a new second screen app.

Marvel Entertainment has released The Avengers Initiative: A Marvel Second Screen Experience, a free, universal app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch which allows fans of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye to participate in a more immersive experience than simply watching the movie.

"Enter the S.H.I.E.L.D. database on your second screen device accessing personnel files, comic book origins and exclusive interactive content," the app description reads.

The Avengers Initiative second screen app is perfectly timed with this week's giant Comic-Con event in San Diego, which kicks off Thursday, July 12.

"Become a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and participate in the Item 47 Comic-Con experience either remotely or in the field," the app teases. "Updates throughout the summer will provide even more access to the S.H.I.E.L.D. database."

Marvel has previously announced that such updates will include a second screen experience for the movie as well, which arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on September 25 in a number of different configurations.

PhotoBeamer Mirrors your Camera Roll to the Big Screen

Now that's how you display photos!

A couple days ago, we told you all about Facebook's rather weak photo-sharing app, Camera. But what if you're looking for a decidedly more local solution to share your pics? Scalado, a Swedish imaging company with its technology already available in over half-a-billion phone cameras, has just released it's first iOS app, PhotoBeamer. While you'll find no bells and whistles, it is quite possibly the easiest way to mirror image from your iOS device to a larger screen.

PhotoBeamer can display an image from your iOS device's camera roll on any display with a web browser. After choosing an initial photo, the app starts looking for a QR code. You'll find that code on the front page of Scalado's associated website. The image you initially selected quickly appears on the display and swiping through the Camera Roll changes the image in turn.

After playing with the app for a night, we found PhotoBeamer to work solidly. Latency between the iOS device and the browser-based image was almost non-existent and the interface is extremely simple to use from the outset.
