Many of us go through our daily lives dealing with noise that we often take to be an irritation: The thumping booms of a cranked car stereo, the pounding of pavement in a construction zone, an over-excited dog incessantly barking. But we'd be lost if those very annoyances disappeared. According to the Center for Hearing and Communication, 38 million people in the United States go through life with significant hearing loss or with the sounds of the world around them completely muted. Luckily, modern technology has made great strides in improving communication for people that suffer from hearing loss.
