Free App Friday: Starry

One of my favorite things to do when I'm on a camping trip is star gaze. I don't use a telescope or any of those star gazing apps; rather I take in all of those glistening dots and enjoy the rare moments I get to actually experience the night sky. After I've had my moment, that's when I'll try my hand at naming the constellations. And I'll usually get them wrong.

Enter Starry, a free alternative to all of those paid star-gazing apps in the App Store. Upon launch, Starry pinpoints your location by latitude and longitude and displays the sky up above. Select a star or planet, and Starry gives you more information about what it is and where it is in the galaxy. This app can also help you navigate, as it always defaults to the North Star, and it shows orbits, as well as where the sun is right now--even if it's on the other side of the earth!

This free app is well worth the download to turn your camping trip into an educational one. And though it isn't as fully featured as some of the paid astronomy apps out there, it's just as informative.
