Free App Friday: Appetites

Cooking is a science that I don't seem to be catching on to, which is a bit of a bummer. I can make your basic dish of pasta and green vegetables, but when it comes to the more complicated stuff -- like making pie crust from scratch or a Vegan dish that isn't bland -- I really need help. While there are recipe apps like Epicurious available, they tend to work better if you know what you're doing in the kitchen.

Enter Appetites, a free app that offers video tutorials and "classes" for various recipes and cooking techniques. The videos offer a step-by-step breakdown of each recipe that's featured, and teach you common tips to help populate your food knowledge bank for future cooking endeavors. The one caveat is that Appetites is free up to a certain point--it comes with a Starter Pack of 30 recipes, but you'll have to purchase additional ones for $1.99 a piece. Regardless, Appetites is a perfect example of how the iPad can be utilized in the kitchen, besides being seen as a glorified recipe library, and I'm going to have fun learning how to make Brown Butter Pumpkin Mac and Cheese for dinner tonight.
