Best Case Scenario: Moleskine Digital Tablet Shell Case

by Florence Ion 0Comments

Everyone knows Moleskine as the ubiquitous black hardcover notebook for writers. The company has managed to make itself relevant in these digital times by releasing a plethora of products that cater to everyone, including LEGO-themed notebooks for kids, travel notebooks for jet setters, and notebooks with watercolor paper for artists. But with the prevalence of tablets and eReaders, many users may be picking up their iPad before they reach for the Moleskine. For that reason, Moleskine has released a Digital Shell Case that's meant to house your iPad and carry your writing materials.

The Digital Shell matches the conservative, minimalistic color scheme of the Moleskine notebooks. The matte black exterior is made of protective and water-repellant material, so you don't have to worry about your iPad taking the brunt of the fall. Inside, there's a velcro-attached support that snaps on to the iPad that can either prop it up inside the shell or used outside of it for easier grip and protection on the bottom of the iPad. The support also includes elastic bands on the back that can strap in your iPad charging cord and headphones. There's also a mesh pocket on the inside of the shell that comes with its own little Moleskine notebook for taking quick notes. It can also hold your iPad power adapter or a few pens and a stylus.

If you use your iPad for business or side projects, the Digital Tablet Shell Case is fantastic for holding everything you need in one place. Moleskine even made it possible for you to prop up the device on a flight to watch a movie if you need to, or to conduct a Keynote presentation for your next big proposal. You can also fold the shell back for easy reading. Depending on your preference, a tablet shell can seem like a bit of overkill for a device that might be in use all the time, but the Shell case is so well made it's hardly a bother.

The bottom line. The iPad and your Moleskine can be best friends and have a equal part in your life with the help of the Digital Tablet Shell Case.

Best Case Scenario: Incipio Slim Kickstand Folio

by Florence Ion 0Comments

I'm not a fan of the Smart Cover because I'm not particularly satisfied with the fact that my iPad's backend is completely open to a world filled with scratchy things. I usually lean toward folio-style cases to keep the iPad protected, and fortunately Incipio has plenty of offerings. This week, we're reviewing the Incipio Slim Kickstand folio case for the third-generation iPad. It's exactly the kind of quality we expect from an Incipio case, and it nicely accentuates the iPad's svelte figure.

The iPad snaps into a hard plastic shell on the inside, and the folio lid connects in the back and drapes over the front. You can stand up the iPad in three different angles depending on your viewing preference, and to type, just fold the folio cover backward. The case is nice and thin, though it smelled rather potently of  the vegan "leather" material that it's made out of. The hippie in me is happy to know that no animals were harmed in the making of this case, however. The Kickstand doesn't come in other colors just yet, but this black folio case fits well with a casual business attire.

At its viewing angles, the case felt a little flimsy and unanchored, but fortunately it's stable once it's on a table. I don't know how it'd perform on an airplane tray table, however, so I'd caution against hitting it with your knee.

Another major caveat of the case is that it doesn't have the magnet inside the flap to shut off the iPad screen, so you'll have to make sure to do so before you close the folio lid.

The bottom line. If you use the iPad for Keynote presentations and PDF diagrams and aren't crazy about the Smart Cover, this case will do. But for something that's both rugged and stylish, other cases will do.

3.5/5
