KUKA (News - Alert) Robotics just announced that it will bring in its KR QUANTEC K shelf-mounted robot line into North American soil starting with its QUANTEC KR 120 R3900 Ultra. This new robot weighs about 1221 kg, reaches over 3.9 meters (about 12.8 feet), and can carry up to 120 kg. This champion now takes the title as the world's strongest shelf-mounted robot and has the highest power density of its class.

The series, introduced by KUKA, also includes the KR QUANTEC K Prime. The Prime can lift most heavy loads, with strength to carry from 90-210 kg.

KUKA's QUANTEC K series is actually 12 percent lighter than similar robots, saving manufacturers time and effort necessary in loading and mounting these machines. The new drives introduced into the mechanical arms, and the KR C4 controller, make QUANTEC K robots unload 25 percent faster. Its base height is also advantageous, giving it the ability to reach objects closer to the ground.

According to KUKA, its new shelf-mounted units will have a second axis about 40 cm more in front compared to the position it was in with earlier models. This will let robots reach further in a forward direction and also towards the ground. For mounting, you don’t have to worry, since the QUANTEC K robots have a pattern identical to previous robots, making it much more cost effective to upgrade.

The KUKA Robotics booth at NPE 2012 will include a KR 60-3 HA robot, which will demonstrate the power of these beasts. KR 60-3 HA is infamous for its uncanny accuracy and very continuous motion, which allows it to mill things like mold cavities and polishing.

KUKA isn't just presenting some fancy robot, though. The company also wants to demonstrate its plastic bottle handling units with its KR 5 Sixx. The bot will be rigged with an ATI tool changer for convenience, letting the KR 5 Sixx switch from "plastic bottle mode" to pick up an Apple (News
