Fujitsu (News - Alert) has completed, installed turned on one of the world’s only high energy-efficient systems in the peta-flops-class range. The supercomputer, nicknamed Oakleaf-FX, is now in operation at the University of Tokyo’s Information Technology Center (SCD/ITC), and has been installed at the university’s Kashiwa Campus, Chiba Prefecture.
The supercomputer has an overall power consumption of 1.4MW and will be used to help in cutting-edge research in technological and scientific fields. It will also be used at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of High-Performance Computing education to help train computer science students.
The SCD/ITC has a long record of using supercomputers in science and technology, dating back to 1965. The university’s supercomputing division is used by more than 1,500 researchers, including those outside the university.
The machine uses the PRIMEHPC FX10 to make it highly compatible to K supercomputers. Its peripheral systems include 74 PRIMERGY x86 servers, 234 ETERNUS storage systems and a Technical Computing Suite. This makes the Oakleaf-FX suitable for use in astrophysics, materials science, hydrodynamics, seismology, solid-state physics and several related fields.
The system is also useful in developing application software and in enhancing services, expected once the exascale computing systems of the future become operational.
Fujitsu will greatly benefit from OAKleaf-FX since it will apply Fujitsu’s extensive product line and hardy service framework. The company’s 30 years of experience in HPC support will also help in R&D and analysis.
Despite the product’s contributions to academia and industry activities, it may eventually participate in large-scale jobs.
