Diablo 4.01 to Precede Diablo 3 to Market: Reddit Sources

Fans of the Diablo franchise have been waiting patiently – well, more or less – since the year 2000 for the sequel to the wildly popular Diablo 2. Recently, Blizzard, the company behind Diablo, announced that Diablo 3 would debut in May of this year. But many fans have been asking “What took so long?” and “What has Blizzard been doing for 12 years?”

The answer, of course, is working on Diablo 4. And today, thanks to a highly reputable post on Reddit, we now know that the sequel to Diablo 3, tentatively called Diablo 4.01, is coming out BEFORE the long-awaited third installment of the game even hits the stands.

“Diablo 4.01 street date set for one month from April 1” was the headline of the thread created by Reddit user germydermy.

That, of course, sent a legion of non-geeky, non-socially awkward gamers into a tizzy. It was a greater frenzy than how excited the land of Sanctuary was when I stopped Baal from obtaining the Worldstone.

“Honestly, I don’t know what has taken the folks at Blizzard so long to come up with Diablo 3,” said Alf Prosoli, lead programmer for Flurry Entertainment, a smaller, lesser-funded subsidiary of Blizzard. “I think they’ve been playing Duke Nukem all day instead of programming. We finished coding Diablo 4 in a few hours. It really wasn’t that tough, actually.”

Prosoli admits that the game, which he denies rushing to market despite the fact that he only started working on it last Thursday, may not have all the features that fans of the franchise may expect from its fourth installment.

For example, the game will feature eight-bit graphics, similar to that of classic Nintendo games from the mid 80’s. “The fact that the only playable character looks like a small Italian in red overalls is just a bigger part of the overall story,” he teases.

“Also, the cut scenes may look like they were done via flip-book animation, but that is just part of the retro feel we wanted for the game,” he said, noting that it may be a prequel or it may not. “I don’t really know anything about the story, if there is one.”

Prosoli said that the game will be available in multiple formats, either 5.25 inch or 3.5 inch floppies. “Your copy may have the name of another game scratched out and ‘Diable Foor’ written in crayon, but again, that is part of the shabby chic mystique the franchise is known for. Right? Isn’t it?”

There is one feature of the game that Prosoli is very excited about: the April Fool’s Dectector app which activates as soon as the game is put into your Commodore 64 or Texas Instruments (News
